Chapter 34: Lily's Breakthrough

810 words

A shallow breath hitched in Lily’s small chest. Elara’s eyes, red-rimmed and exhausted, fixed on the rise and fall. She’d spent countless nights in that chair, every muscle aching, every nerve taut. Watching. Waiting. Another breath, slightly deeper this time. A flicker beneath her eyelids. Hope, a fragile, dangerous thing, dared to spark in Elara’s heart. Hours later, a doctor, his face usually grim, approached with a new light in his eyes. "Her fever has broken, Ms. Vance." His voice was a low murmur, but the words echoed like a thunderclap in the sterile room. "The experimental treatment… it's working." Working. The word felt foreign, too good to be true. Tears, hot and fast, finally spilled over Elara’s cheeks. A raw, guttural sob escaped her throat, a sound she’d held captive for weeks. Every ounce of tension, every fear, every desperate prayer, began to unravel. Falling to her knees, Elara pressed her face into the cool hospital sheets. This was it. The nightmare was ending. Later, wiping her eyes, Elara looked at Lily. Her daughter’s skin had lost its pale, translucent quality. A faint flush touched her cheeks. Her chest moved with a steady, rhythmic cadence. The machines still beeped, but their rhythm felt less frantic, more harmonious. Lily was fighting. Lily was winning. Overwhelmed, Elara reached out, gently stroking Lily’s hair. So much. So much had happened. She thought of Kian. His abrupt arrival, the cold, hard deal, the impossible debt. Then, the relentless pursuit of this treatment. The calls, the connections, the sheer financial weight he’d shouldered. Kian had moved mountains. He’d done what no one else could, what Elara herself, despite all her desperate efforts, had failed to achieve. Gratitude, fierce and undeniable, surged through her. It warred with the resentment, the anger, the bitter taste of their arrangement. How could she hate him when he’d just given her daughter back? How could she forget the reason for his involvement, the debt that bound her, when Lily’s life had been hanging by a thread? Kian had appeared at the hospital earlier. He stood by the doorway, a silent sentinel, his dark eyes fixed on Lily. He hadn’t said much, just a brief, almost imperceptible nod when the doctor delivered the news. His jaw had relaxed, just a fraction. Then, he’d simply left, his presence a fleeting shadow. He didn’t stay for the relief, didn't demand recognition. His silence was almost more unsettling than his usual cold words. It left Elara wrestling with a complex knot of emotions. Days melted into a blur of incremental improvements. Lily coughed more strongly, her eyes fluttered open for longer stretches. She started to respond to Elara’s voice, a weak squeeze of her hand, a slight turn of her head. Each small victory was monumental. Elara felt herself coming alive again, the suffocating dread finally lifting. Today, Lily's eyes opened fully. They were still a little hazy, but focused. She looked at Elara, a tiny, tired smile gracing her lips. "Mommy," she whispered, her voice raspy but clear. Elara’s heart swelled, tears pricking her eyes again. "My love. You're awake. You're really awake." Elara leaned in, pressing a soft kiss to Lily’s forehead. Lily’s hand, still weak, reached up, her small fingers curling around Elara's own. "Water," Lily managed, her voice stronger this time. Elara quickly fetched a cup, holding the straw to her daughter's lips. Sipping slowly, Lily’s gaze drifted around the room. She seemed to take everything in, her brow furrowed slightly in thought. "I heard you talking," Lily murmured, her eyes locking onto Elara’s face. "About… a man." Elara froze. Had she spoken aloud about Kian? Had Lily overheard her internal debates, her arguments with herself? "Mom," Lily continued, her voice gaining a surprising clarity, "Mom said you're living with the man who saved us? Is he nice?"
