Chapter 38: Threat to the Child
682 words
Warmth lingered in the air, a phantom touch from shared breaths. Julian’s gaze held Clara’s, a silent question passing between them, heavier than any words. The evidence lay scattered on the table, irrefutable proof of Thorne’s malfeasance.
Clara inhaled sharply, breaking the spell. Her eyes flickered to the documents. "We have him." Her voice was a strained whisper, barely audible.
Julian nodded slowly. A grim satisfaction settled over him, laced with a familiar unease. The victory felt hollow, precarious.
"This is enough to go to the board," Clara continued, gathering the files with trembling hands. "Enough to expose everything. To save countless patients."
He watched her, the fierce determination in her eyes, the slight tremble in her fingers. They had worked days, nights, fueled by coffee and a burning desire for justice.
But a dark premonition coiled in his gut. Thorne wouldn't surrender easily. A man so meticulous, so ruthless, would have contingencies.
Morning arrived too soon. Exhaustion clung to them like a second skin. They made their plan, detailing the presentation for the hospital board, outlining the legal ramifications.
Just as Clara was about to leave, his phone buzzed. A number he didn't recognize.
Julian frowned, hesitating. He usually ignored unknown calls. Something, however, compelled him to answer.
"Hello?" he said, his voice curt.
Static crackled. Then, a voice, calm and measured, spoke. Dr. Thorne.
Julian felt a cold jolt. "Thorne. How did you get this number?"
"A small thing, Julian," Thorne's voice purred, devoid of its usual professional warmth. "Like a small, vulnerable child, easily overlooked, easily… found."
Julian's blood ran cold. He gripped the phone, knuckles white. "What are you talking about?"
"Your son, Leo," Thorne continued, his tone chillingly casual. "He's quite a fighter, isn't he? So brave, enduring all those tests, all those needles."
A tremor shook Julian's hand. His mind raced, every nerve screaming. "Don't you dare." Each word was a struggle.
"He has a favorite toy, doesn't he?" Thorne's voice dropped, becoming a sinister murmur. "A little teddy bear. One ear is a bit frayed. Lost an eye a while back, I believe? You stitched it back on with a piece of string. Named him Buttons, didn't you?"
Julian's breath hitched. Buttons. Leo’s most cherished possession, a bear Julian had mended himself after a particularly bad fall.
"How do you know that?" Julian roared, fury coiling in his chest, battling overwhelming fear.
Thorne chuckled, a dry, unsettling sound. "I know many things, Julian. I know you're close. Very close to ruining everything I've built. And I know what you value most."
"You threaten my son, I swear to God—"
"Swear all you want," Thorne interrupted smoothly. "But understand this: if you or Miss Albright present a single shred of that fabricated evidence, if you utter one word against me to anyone, Leo will suffer. And not just a little scrape. He will disappear. Or worse."
Silence stretched, heavy and suffocating. Julian's heart hammered against his ribs, a frantic drumbeat of terror.
"Don't test me, Julian," Thorne's voice hardened, losing its earlier calm. "I have eyes everywhere. I have resources you can't even fathom. Give up. Walk away. And your son remains safe, ignorant of your foolish crusade."
The line went dead. Julian stood frozen, the phone still pressed to his ear, ringing with the phantom echo of Thorne’s threats.
Clara watched him, her brow furrowed with concern. "Julian? What is it? You look like you've seen a ghost."
He slowly lowered the phone, his face ashen. "It was Thorne." His voice was barely a whisper.
"What did he say? Did he know about the evidence?"
Julian stared at her, his eyes wide with a horrifying realization. "He knows about Leo. He threatened him."
Clara gasped, her hand flying to her mouth. "No. He wouldn't."
"He described Buttons," Julian said, the words catching in his throat. "He knows about Buttons. He knows about the stitched eye, the frayed ear. He knows everything."
Panic seized them both. Every instinct screamed at Julian to get to his son. He had to be sure. He had to protect him.
