Chapter 28: A Father's Fury
305 words
A hollow ache bloomed in Julian's chest, twisting around the raw wound of his recovered memories. Clara's words, a desperate cascade of explanations, washed over him, but none could penetrate the icy wall he was building. He saw the genuine fear in her eyes, the tremor in her voice, yet an even deeper tremor shook his own soul.
His gaze, unblinking, fixed on her. Each point she made – her fear of scandal, his engagement to Amelia, her belief she was protecting him – felt like another shard of glass twisting in his gut. Protection? He had been living a lie for a decade.
Lost years, an entire childhood, flashed before his eyes. Leo's first steps, his first word, his first scraped knee. Milestones he had missed, stolen from him, by the woman he had loved more than life itself.
Anger, cold and precise, began to replace the initial shock. It wasn't the fiery rage that consumed him after the accident. This was something far more dangerous, a quiet, calcifying fury that threatened to shatter everything.
'Protecting *him*?' Julian's voice was a low growl, barely audible above the hum of the hospital. He took a slow step forward, forcing Clara to instinctively retreat.
He remembered the feel of her hand in his, the scent of her hair, the way she laughed. Those memories, once treasured, now felt poisoned. A cruel trick of fate, or perhaps, a cruel trick of Clara's own making.
'Julian, please, you have to understand. I was alone. I was terrified. Amelia… you were with Amelia.' Her voice cracked, tears streaming down her face.
Her pleas fell on deaf ears. He saw only Leo, fragile and fighting for his life, just beyond that door. His son, who he had unknowingly passed in the halls of this very hospital, unaware of their connection.
