Chapter 19: Dodging the Truth

949 words

A heavy silence settled in the hospital room after Leo drifted back to sleep. Julian watched Clara gently adjust the blanket over the boy, her movements practiced, tender. He felt an unfamiliar tightness in his chest. That small hand in his, Leo's unexpected grip. It had been more than just a child's reflex. Clearing his throat, Julian broke the quiet. "Clara, we need to talk." His voice was low, careful, not wanting to disturb Leo. She straightened, turning to face him. Her expression was neutral, but a flicker of something, perhaps apprehension, crossed her eyes. "About what, Mr. Thorne? Leo's progress?" "About everything," he corrected softly. "About you. About Leo." He gestured towards the small cot. "About his father." Clara's jaw tightened almost imperceptibly. She walked to the window, gazing out at the city lights. "There isn't much to say, Mr. Thorne. I'm Leo's mother. I’m here for him." Julian pushed off the wall, moving closer. "I saw you earlier. Distressed. And then... Leo. He reached for me." He paused, searching her face. "It felt... significant." Turning from the window, Clara met his gaze directly. "Children are intuitive, Mr. Thorne. You've shown kindness to him. It's natural." "Kindness?" Julian scoffed, a dry sound. "I'm paying his medical bills. That's a transaction, not an emotional bond." He needed more. He needed answers. "He doesn't see it that way," Clara said, her voice surprisingly steady. "He sees a kind man, interested in his well-being. It's a rare thing for us." Her words felt like a wall. Julian pressed harder. "Where is his father, Clara? Why are you alone with him?" Clara's eyes hardened, a barely visible shield snapping into place. "His father isn't relevant to Leo's care, Mr. Thorne. He's not in the picture." "Not in the picture how? Deceased? Out of touch? Or simply... absent?" Julian's voice took on a sharper edge. He wouldn't let her evade this time. A long breath escaped her. "Absent." The single word hung in the air, heavy with unspoken history. "It's just me and Leo." "For how long?" Julian persisted. "When did you leave him? Or did he leave you?" Clara took a step back, her hands clenching at her sides. "My personal history isn't part of our agreement, Mr. Thorne. I'm here to work for you. To ensure Leo recovers." "But it is," Julian countered, his own frustration mounting. "You're living in my house. My son is developing a connection with your son. I need to know who I'm dealing with. Who Leo is." "Leo is a sweet, intelligent boy who needs a chance at life," Clara stated, her voice rising slightly. "That's all you need to know about him." "And his origins? His family background?" Julian pressed on. "What about his father's medical history? It could be relevant." Clara averted her eyes, a muscle ticking in her jaw. "I assure you, there's nothing relevant to share. Everything is... stable on that front." "Stable?" Julian repeated, disbelieving. "That's a vague answer, Clara. I need specifics. What was his father's name? Where is he from?" She shook her head slowly, a deep sadness entering her gaze. "It's a painful past, Mr. Thorne. One I've tried to move on from. Dwelling on it won't help Leo."
