Chapter 27: A Mother's Roar

948 words

Gasping, Anya stumbled back, her hand flying to her throat. Elias’s words, sharp and lethal, felt like daggers to her chest. Custody. He meant to rip Lily from her. Never. Not ever. She wouldn't allow it. "Custody?" Her voice cracked, a raw sound of disbelief and rising fury. "You want custody? After six years?" His eyes, once filled with a warmth only she had known, were now frigid. "She is my daughter, Anya. Our daughter. And you stole her from me." "Stole her?" Anya laughed, a harsh, brittle sound. "I didn't steal her, Elias. You left her. You left *us*." Pain flared in her chest, hot and familiar. She remembered the endless nights, the terror of an unplanned pregnancy, the crushing loneliness. Remembering the morning she'd stood in that desolate parking lot, clutching the positive test, her world crumbling. He was gone. He had vanished without a trace, without a word. "Where were you, Elias?" Her voice rose, gaining strength. "Where were you when I was sick every morning, alone? Where were you when I had to choose between rent and groceries?" She took a step closer, her own anger now matching his. "Where were you when I held our baby for the first time, all alone in a sterile hospital room, terrified and overjoyed all at once?" His jaw clenched, a muscle twitching. He looked away for a fraction of a second, then his gaze snapped back, harder than before. "You could have told me!" "How?" Anya threw her hands up. "How, Elias? You changed your number. You disappeared from every social media platform. Your apartment was empty. You were gone!" She felt the sting of tears, but refused to let them fall. Not in front of him. Not now. She needed to be strong for Lily. "I tried," she insisted, her voice thick with emotion. "I tried for weeks, for months. I called your friends, your old colleagues. No one knew anything. It was like you evaporated." Frustration clawed at her. He made it sound so simple, so easy. He made it sound like *her* fault. "And even if I had found you," she continued, her voice dropping to a fierce whisper, "what would I have done? Called you up to say, 'Hey, remember that fling? Surprise, you're a dad!' After you abandoned me without a word?" His face remained impassive, betraying nothing but cold resolve. "That doesn't excuse you keeping her from me." "It excuses me protecting her!" Anya roared, the sound echoing in the spacious living room. "Protecting her from a man who vanishes, from a man who clearly didn't want the responsibility!" She pointed a trembling finger at him. "You want to talk about betrayal? You betrayed me first. You broke my heart, Elias. You shattered it into a million pieces. And I rebuilt my life, brick by painful brick, for Lily." Standing tall, despite the tremor in her limbs, she met his gaze head-on. "She is my world. My everything. And no matter what legal threats you make, no matter how much money you have, you will not take her from me." His eyes narrowed, a dangerous glint entering them. "I will fight you, Anya. I will fight you with everything I have. And I assure you, you will lose." "Try me," she challenged, her chin lifting. "Because I will fight you harder. I will fight you until my last breath. You think I'm scared of you? I've faced worse. I've faced being a single mother with nothing but hope and grit." Anya's resolve was a tangible force in the room, her fierce protectiveness radiating off her. She was a lioness defending her cub. Watching her, something shifted in Elias’s expression. A flicker of something unreadable – respect, perhaps, or a dawning realization of the depth of her struggle. His posture, once rigid with anger, softened imperceptibly. He knew this woman. This fiery, resilient woman was the same one he’d once loved. The one he’d left. "Lily," he finally said, his voice low, almost a rumble. "She doesn't know. About me." Anya shook her head. "No. She knows about her father, but... not you." "She's scared," he continued, his gaze drifting to the closed door of Lily's room. "She's scared of what happened tonight." "Of course, she is!" Anya's voice was tight with pain. "You burst in here like a hurricane, Elias. You traumatized her!" He rubbed a hand across his forehead, a rare gesture of weariness. "This isn't good. For her." "No, it isn't." Anya’s voice was softer now, tinged with exhaustion. The fight had drained her, but her core resolve remained. "We need to stop this," Elias stated, his eyes returning to hers. "For now." Her breath caught. Was he backing down? A sliver of hope, fragile and tentative, sparked within her. "We can't have her caught in the middle of... this," he gestured vaguely between them. "Not like this." He took a deep breath, his chest rising and falling. "I'm not saying I'm giving up my claim to her. Not for a second. But we need a temporary truce. For Lily's sake." Anya studied him, suspicion warring with relief. A truce? It sounded too good to be true. His face was still set, but the raw fury had lessened, replaced by a grim determination. "A truce?" she echoed, cautiously. "What does that mean?" "It means," Elias articulated, his voice firm, "we don't make any sudden moves. No lawyers, no court orders. Not yet. We figure out a way to introduce myself to her, slowly. Gently." Her heart hammered against her ribs. Slowly. Gently. It was more than she could have hoped for moments ago. But the warning in his eyes was clear. "This is a delay, Anya," he warned, his gaze piercing. "Not a surrender. Make no mistake. I will have my daughter. But I will do it in a way that doesn't shatter her world." He held her gaze, his conviction unwavering. "Consider this a pause in the war, not an end to it." Feeling a strange mix of dread and a faint, almost imperceptible sense of victory, Anya slowly nodded. For Lily, a temporary peace was paramount. But she knew, with chilling certainty, that this was far from over. This was merely the calm before a much greater storm.
