Chapter 44: Lily's Life on the Line
905 words
Sleepless hours blurred into a desolate morning. Alexander stood by the floor-to-ceiling windows, the city's early light doing little to dispel the gloom clinging to him. Marcus. His uncle. The man who had once taught him how to tie a Windsor knot, who’d shared countless holiday dinners, was the venomous root of their suffering.
Elara watched him from the bed, her own heart aching. He looked like a man carved from granite, unyielding and unbreakable, yet she knew the cracks ran deep.
"He knew everything," Alexander's voice was a low growl, raw with betrayal. "Every vulnerability, every weak point within Thorne Enterprises. He exploited it all."
Marcus had played the long game, a master manipulator weaving a web of deceit around his own family. Alexander’s jaw worked, a muscle twitching near his temple. The revelation had gutted him.
Approaching him, Elara placed a hand on his rigid back. "We'll find him, Alex. We have the proof now."
He turned, his gaze distant, haunted. "Proof isn't enough. He's smarter than that. This isn't just about money, Elara. This is personal. He hated my father. He always resented him. And now... he's coming for me."
A chill snaked down Elara's spine. Alexander’s past was a battlefield, and Marcus was a ghost from it, now made flesh and blood.
"We need to ensure Lily is safe," she urged, her voice tight with sudden fear. "Immediately."
Alexander nodded, already pulling out his phone. "I'm calling security. Extra guards, direct watch. No chances."
Lily, oblivious to the storm brewing, was at her morning playdate, a weekly tradition at Mrs. Albright’s house, just two blocks away. It was supposed to be a safe, familiar environment. Mrs. Albright was a retired teacher, known for her gentle demeanor and strict adherence to routine.
Hours later, the penthouse felt like a tomb. Alexander and Elara sat hunched over a tablet, reviewing security footage from Marcus’s private office, dissecting every frame for new clues. Their focus was absolute, their conversation hushed and intense.
Suddenly, Elara’s personal phone vibrated on the glass coffee table. She glanced at the screen. An unknown number. She rarely answered calls from unregistered contacts, preferring to screen them.
"Who is it?" Alexander asked, not looking up from the screen.
"Unknown," she murmured, her thumb hovering over the answer button. Something felt off.
Deciding to ignore it, she reached for her coffee. The phone rang again, insistent. And then a third time. Alexander looked up, a flicker of concern in his eyes.
"Answer it, Elara. Just in case."
Swiping right, Elara held the phone to her ear, her other hand instinctively going to her chest. Static crackled for a moment, then a distorted voice, almost electronic, spoke.
"Hello, Elara. Such a pretty name. Almost as pretty as your daughter."
Her blood ran cold. The coffee cup slipped from her fingers, shattering on the polished floor. Alexander was instantly beside her, grabbing the phone, putting it on speaker.
"Who is this?" he roared, his face contorting into a mask of pure fury.
"Alexander. Always so predictable." The voice chuckled, a chilling, hollow sound. "I believe you know who this is. Or perhaps, you've forgotten your own flesh and blood."
A video feed suddenly activated. Elara gasped, clutching Alexander's arm, her nails digging into his bicep. On the screen, grainy and unsettling, was Lily.
Lily was sitting on a cold, concrete floor, her small hands tied loosely with a rope, her mouth covered with a strip of dark tape. Her eyes, wide and terrified, darted around, searching for something, someone. A single tear tracked a path down her cheek.
"Lily!" Elara screamed, reaching for the screen as if she could pull her daughter out of it. Her heart hammered against her ribs, a frantic drumbeat of terror.
Alexander’s face was ashen. His breath hitched, his eyes fixed on his daughter. The image was a punch to the gut, a horror beyond anything he’d ever imagined.
"She's perfectly safe, for now," the distorted voice purred, enjoying their agony. "A little uncomfortable, perhaps, but unharmed. For now."
"What do you want?" Alexander’s voice was strained, barely a whisper of the powerful man he usually was. Every ounce of his focus was on that innocent face on the screen.
"Revenge," the voice hissed, the single word dripping with malice. "And you, Alexander, will pay the price for your father's sins, and your own."
The screen flickered, and then a timer appeared, stark white numbers against a black background: 24:00:00.
"You have twenty-four hours, Alexander. Comply with my demands, or watch your daughter disappear forever. I will be in touch with the details. Do anything foolish, involve the authorities, and you will regret it. Your time starts now."
The video feed cut out. The phone went dead. Only the echoing silence remained, punctuated by Elara’s ragged sobs. Lily was gone. The enemy wasn't just after Thorne Enterprises, or Alexander's reputation. He was after his heart, and he’d just ripped it out.
