Chapter 44: The Puppet Master
789 words
Relief washed over Anya, a rare, gentle tide. Hearing about Chloe’s progress had settled a restless ache in her chest. The world still spun with corporate battles, but a tiny beacon of personal hope now flickered brightly.
She allowed herself a moment, leaning back in Julian’s office chair. The warm glow of the desk lamp illuminated stacks of digital files, remnants of Sterling Media’s past. They needed archiving, consolidating. A necessary evil, Julian had called it.
Scrolling through a folder labeled ‘Legacy Acquisitions – 2018’, her fingers brushed the trackpad. Most files were dry legal documents. Yet, one caught her eye. An encrypted memo, dated just weeks before her gallery imploded.
Clicking it open, a password prompt appeared. Julian’s usual one, a string of seemingly random numbers, worked. The document unspooled, not a contract, but a series of brief, coded instructions.
They detailed specific steps: how to approach a certain bank, which shell companies to use for asset transfers, even the exact phrasing to use when communicating with her former gallery owner.
Her breath hitched. This wasn't Julian's usual methodical approach. It was too precise, too manipulative, even for his past, ruthless self. A cold dread began to seep into her bones.
The memo concluded with a single, cryptic line: 'Confirmed with E.T. proceed.'
E.T. Who was E.T.? Julian had never mentioned anyone else being involved in the detailed dismantling of her career. He had always taken full responsibility, however begrudgingly at first.
Her mind raced, sifting through old conversations, arguments. He’d always painted himself as the sole architect of her downfall, driven by ambition and a warped sense of duty to his family’s empire.
But these instructions… they felt alien to his known methods. They spoke of a different kind of cunning, a shadow operator pulling strings from afar.
Rising, Anya moved to Julian’s personal terminal. He kept meticulous records, sometimes too meticulous. She searched his private correspondence, cross-referencing dates, names. Anything connected to ‘E.T.’.
Minutes later, a series of archived emails appeared. They were largely innocuous, professional exchanges with various art world figures. But one name recurred frequently around that time: Elias Thorne.
Elias Thorne. The name hit her like a physical blow. Renowned art critic. Esteemed curator. Philanthropist. A man she had admired from afar, whose reviews could make or break a career.
He had even championed some of her early, lesser-known contemporaries. She remembered attending a lecture he gave on contemporary sculpture, captivated by his eloquent insights.
Could it be? The thought was grotesque, twisting her stomach into knots. Elias Thorne, the very embodiment of ethical artistic discernment, involved in something so sordid?
Julian walked in then, rubbing tired eyes. He saw the screen, saw the memo, saw the name ‘Elias Thorne’ highlighted. His entire body stiffened.
