Chapter 32: The Sealed Wing

Sleep offered no escape.
Haunting her waking thoughts, the photograph burned behind Anya's eyelids. Julian’s casual remark about a ‘former associate’ who ‘couldn’t handle the pressure’ echoed. His eyes, lingering on her, were a predator’s promise. She wasn't just his muse; she was his next potential victim.
Paranoia, sharp and cold, settled deep in her bones. This wasn't a fleeting suspicion. This was a chilling certainty that Julian collected women, consumed them, then discarded them, leaving only their spectral image in the shadows of his grand estate.
She had to know. She needed answers about the woman in the photo, a ghost from Julian's past who might well be a precursor to Anya’s own fate.
Investigating, however, was a labyrinthine task. Julian's presence was a constant, subtle surveillance. His attention, once flattering, now felt like a cage closing around her.
Later that day, feigning a need for fresh inspiration, Anya ventured into the sprawling main studio. She hoped to find some forgotten trace, a clue the cleaning staff might have missed or deemed insignificant.
Dust motes danced in the shafts of sunlight slicing through tall windows. Canvases, finished and unfinished, stood stacked against walls. Easels waited, like silent sentinels.
Carefully, Anya ran her fingers over a discarded palette, dried paint a mosaic of faded colors. None matched the vibrant hues in the photo. She scanned shelves overflowing with art books, searching for a name, a dedication, anything.
Minutes stretched into an hour. Julian could walk in at any moment. Her heart hammered against her ribs, a frantic bird desperate for flight.
Near a forgotten corner, behind a stack of old, leather-bound art theory books, she found it. A small, wooden cigar box, plain and unmarked. Her fingers trembled as she lifted the lid.
Inside, a single, delicate silver locket rested on a bed of aged velvet. It wasn't ornate, just simple, elegant. Opening it, she found two tiny, faded portraits. One, unmistakably, was a younger Julian. The other… the woman from the photo.
Anya's breath hitched. This was more than a former associate. This was intimate. This was personal. Julian had kept it, hidden it.
Thrusting the box back into its hiding place, Anya felt a wave of nausea. He wasn't just a collector; he was a keeper of relics. A hunter who meticulously preserved the trophies of his conquests.
Days blurred into a pattern of feigned normalcy and frantic, secret searches. She observed the staff. Most were young, new, or too intimidated to speak freely. But old Mrs. Gable, the head housekeeper, had been here for decades. Her eyes held stories.
“Mrs. Gable,” Anya began one afternoon, finding the elderly woman polishing an antique table in the library. “This estate is so vast. I was just wondering… have there been other artists who’ve stayed here for extended periods?”
Mrs. Gable paused, her movements stiff. Her gaze flickered to Anya, then away, her expression unreadable. “A few, Miss Anya. Over the years.” Her voice was hushed, almost a whisper.
“Really? Anyone particularly notable? Julian speaks so highly of their work.” Anya pressed, trying to sound genuinely curious, not desperate.
“Some were… more memorable than others.” Mrs. Gable finally met her gaze, a deep sadness etched around her eyes. “But they all eventually… found their own way.”
The way she said ‘found their own way’ chilled Anya. It implied departure, but also a finality, a fading into oblivion. “And the woman in the older portraits? The one Julian painted so exquisitely?” Anya pushed, risking too much.
Mrs. Gable's hand faltered on the table. A tremor ran through her thin frame. “You mean Miss Vivienne?” The name was barely audible.
“Yes, Vivienne. What happened to her?”
“Ah, Vivienne…” Mrs. Gable sighed, a long, weary sound. “She was here a long time ago. A real beauty. A talent, too. But the pressure, you see. It got to her. She just… disappeared one day. No one knew where she went. Julian was quite distraught.”
Distraught? Or complicit? Anya’s mind raced. “Was there… a particular part of the estate she favored?”
Mrs. Gable’s eyes darted towards a distant corner of the mansion, an older section barely visible through the library window. “She had her own studio in the West Wing. But that wing… it’s been closed off for years. Sealed, after… after she left. A sad place, that.”
Sealed. The word hung in the air, heavy with unspoken histories. A disused wing, rumored amongst the younger staff to be haunted. A place no one dared to enter.
Later that night, armed with a sketch of the estate’s layout she’d found in an old architectural book, Anya pinpointed the West Wing. It was an anomaly, a blank space on Julian's carefully curated map of his domain.
Moonlight spilled through her window as she dressed in dark clothes. Her heart thumped a frantic rhythm against her ribs. Fear warred with a desperate need for truth. She couldn't live in this gilded cage, waiting to become another forgotten muse.
Stealthily, she navigated the familiar corridors. The house slept, a vast, breathing entity of shadows and silence. Her bare feet made no sound on the cold marble floors.
Reaching the junction to the West Wing, a heavy, ornate wooden door stood before her. It was unlike any other door in the mansion, older, grander, and secured with a rusted, elaborate lock that had clearly been disused for decades. Dust motes, thick and undisturbed, coated its surface.
An oppressive chill emanated from it, different from the house’s usual regulated temperature. A faint, cloying scent of decay and old oil paint seemed to cling to the very air around it. This wasn’t just a sealed off area; it felt like a tomb.
Anya pressed her ear to the cold wood. Silence. But it wasn’t an empty silence. It was a silence filled with ghosts, with whispers of a tragic past, echoing a story Julian had tried to bury.
Her fingers traced the cold metal of the lock. This was Vivienne's wing. This was where the answers lay.
Summoning every ounce of courage, Anya knew she had to find a way inside. The sealed wing beckoned, a silent sentinel guarding Julian's darkest secrets and the fate of Vivienne, a fate Anya was determined to avoid.
This was where her investigation truly began.
Her gaze hardened. She would not be another ghost in Julian's collection.
