Chapter 41: The Mastermind Unmasked

822 words

A cold dread seized Elias. His breath hitched, the phone almost slipping from his white-knuckled grip. The flickering screen resolved. Not a stranger. A face from a past he'd tried desperately to bury. Elias's jaw tightened, a bitter recognition washing over him. Julian. Clara gasped beside him, her hand flying to her mouth, stifling a cry. "No... it can't be..." Julian’s lips twisted into a cruel parody of a smile, his eyes glinting with a dangerous malice. "Surprise, brother-in-law. Or should I say, *thief*?" "What the hell do you want, Julian?" Elias's voice was a low, dangerous growl, barely audible over the roaring engine. Julian chuckled, a sound devoid of warmth. "What I always wanted, Elias. What you took from me. My family’s legacy. Vance Corp. You, the outsider, stole it, piece by piece." Clara shook her head vehemently, tears welling in her eyes. "Julian, this isn't you. What are you talking about? You gave up on all of this years ago!" He ignored her, his gaze locked onto Elias, burning with an ancient resentment. "You built your empire on the ashes of mine. On the bones of what *should* have been *my* inheritance. While I was struggling, you were soaring, all thanks to *my* family's name." "That’s a lie!" Elias roared. "You walked away! You abandoned everything!" "Did I?" Julian leaned closer to the camera, a predatory gleam in his eyes. "Or was I forced out? Marginalized. Forgotten. While you, the golden boy, swooped in to pick up the pieces I supposedly 'discarded'." His voice dropped, becoming chillingly calm. "And now, your precious son, Leo, will be the key. A distraction, as I said." Elias felt a surge of ice-cold terror. "Don't you dare touch him!" "Oh, I will. Not to harm him directly, no. That would be too quick, too simple." Julian’s smile widened, revealing a glimpse of the monstrous ambition beneath. "He is leverage. Leverage for Vance Corp." Clara sobbed, her body trembling. "Julian, please! He's your nephew!" "Nephew?" Julian scoffed, a sneer twisting his features. "A pawn in a much grander game, Clara. While Elias is scrambling to save his child, I'll be taking back what's mine. Vance Corp. Every last share, every last asset. It all comes back to me." Elias slammed his fist against the steering wheel, the car swerving slightly before he corrected it. "You're insane! You won't get away with this!" "Oh, I already have, Elias." Julian leaned back, a triumphant smirk on his face. "The board is already in motion. Your little 'love story' has been a delightful distraction, a perfect cover for my preparations. All those years you spent building *your* legacy, I spent planning this." He paused, his gaze shifting to Clara, a venomous intensity entering his eyes. "And Clara, my dear little sister. You chose him. You chose his love, his money, his empire, over your own family. You abandoned me too." "That’s not true!" Clara cried, her voice cracking. "I tried to find you! I sent messages!" "Too little, too late." Julian's voice hardened. "You sided with the enemy. And for that, you will pay the steepest price." "What are you talking about?" Elias demanded, his heart pounding against his ribs. "You both will watch." Julian’s voice was a soft, chilling whisper that promised unspeakable horrors. "You will watch as everything you hold dear, everything you've built together, crumbles into dust." The phone screen showed Julian’s face, now contorted into a mask of pure, unadulterated hatred. "And I'll make sure you both have front-row seats for the grand finale, Clara. Starting with Leo. He’s just the beginning of the show." The call disconnected, plunging Elias and Clara back into the terrifying silence of the speeding car, Julian’s chilling promise echoing in their minds. Elias pressed harder on the accelerator, the hospital still miles away, feeling the heavy weight of a reckoning far more personal, far more devastating, than he could have ever imagined.
