Grinding teeth, Adrian forced down the surge of pain. It had been a subtle ache all afternoon, a ghost of old trauma, but now it clawed at his shoulder with renewed vengeance. He'd dismissed it, pushing through the final system diagnostics after Elara's departure, but the strain was taking its toll.
Sweat beaded on his forehead, cool against his skin. He stood from his desk, needing to stretch, to loosen the knot forming deep in his deltoid. A sharp jolt seized him as he moved, making him catch his breath.
Muscles in his back spasmed, a chain reaction of agony. He leaned heavily against the desk, his knuckles white as he gripped the polished edge. The room, usually a sanctuary of calm efficiency, felt like a cage closing in. The sleek, modern lines offered no comfort, only cold indifference.
Elara, who had returned to retrieve a forgotten data chip, paused in the doorway. She saw his rigid stance, the tension radiating from him like a palpable heatwave. Her initial thought was annoyance. Was he always this dramatic? Always demanding attention, even when incapacitated?
A gasp escaped Adrian's lips, a sound of raw suffering that cut through her cynicism, silencing her immediate judgment. He staggered, one hand flying to his shoulder, the other scrabbling for purchase on the smooth wall. His eyes, usually sharp and guarded, were squeezed shut in agony, betraying a profound vulnerability she'd never witnessed.
His breath hitched, ragged and shallow. He slid down the wall, an uncharacteristic display of helplessness from the man who projected an image of unyielding control. The controlled, unyielding Adrian Thorne was dissolving before her eyes, replaced by a man crippled by an unseen, internal force.
Reaching him in three quick strides, Elara hesitated. Her instincts warred with her ingrained distrust. This man had been her captor, her adversary, a constant source of infuriating power plays. Yet, a part of her, a deeply buried empathy, couldn't just watch him suffer like this. The sheer force of his pain was undeniable.
Her fingers brushed his arm, tentatively.
