Chapter 23: A Midnight Discovery
1.3k words
A chill permeated the deserted corridors of the Thorne Art Center. Elara shivered, pulling her cardigan tighter. It was past midnight, yet sleep felt like a distant luxury. Her mind raced with the phantom brush tag, Xander's lingering gaze, the impossible deadline. She’d told herself she needed to recheck the lighting schematics one last time. A flimsy excuse, even to herself.
Footsteps echoed softly on the polished marble. Her own. Alone. Or so she thought.
A faint glow spilled from beneath Xander Thorne’s office door. Not the harsh glare of the overheads, but a softer, warmer light. Curiosity, a potent brew, mixed with the lingering unease from earlier. She hesitated. Every instinct screamed to retreat.
Ignoring the warning, she crept closer. The door was ajar, barely. A sliver of space. Peeking through, she saw him.
Xander sat at his large, imposing desk. His sleeves were rolled up, tie loosened. He wasn’t reviewing budgets or exhibition layouts. Spread before him were massive, yellowed sheets of paper. Old. Very old.
His brow furrowed in concentration. One hand held a drafting compass, its needle lightly tracing lines on the ancient document. The air in his office felt heavy, charged with a secret intensity.
She pressed herself against the cold wall, heart thrumming against her ribs. What was he doing?
Observing his movements, Elara realized he wasn't looking at art. His focus was architectural. Structural. He leaned in, his dark head bent low over the faded script.
A deep breath steadied her. She eased the door open another inch, just enough to glimpse the details.
Intricate lines, cross-sections, and annotations covered the paper. These weren’t recent renovations. These were original blueprints. The foundational plans for the entire Thorne Art Center.
Her gaze snagged on a specific section. It depicted the building’s deepest levels. A subterranean network she’d never known existed. Not the public basement galleries, but something far, far beneath.
A forgotten sub-level. A hidden space.
Xander’s finger paused, then moved, following a series of faint, almost invisible lines. His eyes narrowed, focusing on what seemed to be a sealed off chamber. An area marked with a stark 'Access Restricted' in bold, archaic script.
Fascination warred with a growing sense of dread. What secret could possibly be buried beneath the very heart of the Thorne empire? The art center was a monument to public culture, not a fortress.
He muttered something under his breath, too soft for her to decipher. His intensity was absolute, his focus unwavering. It was as if the world outside his office had ceased to exist.
Sweat beaded on Elara's forehead despite the cool air. She needed to understand. Needed to see more.
Carefully, she shifted her weight, inching closer. Her reflection flickered in the polished surface of a nearby framed print. She held her breath, fearful of even the slightest sound.
Xander reached for a magnifying glass. He held it over a particularly dense section of the blueprint. The yellowed paper seemed to glow under the concentrated light.
His lips moved again, forming silent words. He was deciphering something. Unlocking a puzzle.
Elara strained, trying to make out the minute script. Her vision was good, but the distance, the age of the document, and the low light made it almost impossible. The air conditioner hummed, a low, constant drone.
Suddenly, Xander leaned back, a low sigh escaping his lips. He ran a hand through his dark hair, frustration or perhaps revelation etched on his face.
He picked up a pen, but didn't write. Instead, he simply tapped its end against the blueprint, right over the 'Access Restricted' section. His gaze drifted further, tracing a path along the deepest foundation.
Her eyes followed his movement. What was he connecting? What was the significance of these forgotten depths?
A new detail emerged from the faded lines. A tiny, almost imperceptible symbol next to the sub-level entrance. It looked like an old family crest. The Thorne crest.
But why would the Thorne family crest be on a restricted access blueprint? Especially for a section that was presumably sealed and forgotten?
Xander’s jaw tightened. He pulled another, even older, document from a leather portfolio beside his chair. This one was brittle, crackling slightly as he unfolded it. It seemed to be a ledger, filled with elegant, looping calligraphy.
He cross-referenced, his eyes darting between the blueprint and the ledger. His intensity was chilling. This wasn’t professional curiosity. It felt personal. Urgent.
Elara’s heart pounded a frantic rhythm. She felt like an intruder in a sacred, dangerous space. The weight of his secret pressed down on her.
He pushed the ledger aside, his attention returning to the original blueprint. He moved his hand, fingers splayed, over the entire sub-level diagram. He was searching for something. Something very specific.
His index finger slowly descended. It hovered for a moment, then landed.
He pressed down, almost reverently, on a small, faded annotation. The script was barely legible, obscured by time and handling.
She leaned further, risking discovery. Her breath caught.
His finger traced the words, slow and deliberate, as if imprinting them onto his memory.
'Thorne Family Trust: Guardian of the Vault.'
Elara froze. The words hung in the quiet office, a chilling revelation. Vault? What vault? And Guardian?
Her hiding place felt suddenly precarious. The shadows around her seemed to deepen, offering cold comfort. Xander remained oblivious, his gaze still fixed on the ancient secrets of his family. She retreated further into the darkness, her mind reeling.
