Chapter 35 of 50
A Trap Set
918 words
A cold dread settled in Elara's stomach. Julian Thorne. The name felt like a snake coiling around her heart, threatening to crush it. Ronan had been pacing for what felt like hours, a silent, dangerous storm brewing behind his eyes since the revelation.
He stopped abruptly. His jaw worked, muscles flexing under his skin. His hands clenched and unclenched at his sides, a barely contained fury emanating from him.
"There's only one way," he finally stated, his voice a low, gravelly rasp that sent a shiver down Elara's spine.
Elara’s breath hitched. She watched him, her heart thumping an erratic rhythm against her ribs. What could be the 'only' way when they were facing a ghost from the past, a man fueled by a decade of resentment?
"Julian won't stop," Ronan continued, his gaze distant, fixed on some unseen point in the room. "He's meticulous. He’s patient. He'll keep coming, chipping away at everything we've built, everything we hold dear, until nothing is left."
His eyes met hers then, raw and unflinching. "We can't just defend, Elara. We can't just hide. That's what he expects. That's how he wins slowly, systematically."
A shiver ran down her spine. His words painted a terrifying picture, a slow bleed of their life together. Julian's track record confirmed his insidious nature.
"We need to draw him out," Ronan explained, stepping closer. "Force his hand. Make him show himself, so we can finally end this."
Elara shook her head, a frantic, desperate motion. "How? He's hidden for years. How do we make him surface without putting ourselves in even more danger?"
"No," she whispered, the word a plea, a warning. "Not just ourselves. Our child. Our baby, Ronan."
His gaze hardened, but a flicker of pain crossed his features. He knew the weight of her words. He felt it too. But his conviction was stronger.
"Think, Elara," he urged, taking her hands. His grip was firm, reassuring, yet she could feel the underlying tension in his muscles. "What does Julian want most? To see me broken. To take away what I value above all else. To hurt me where it cuts deepest."
He outlined the details, his voice calm, methodical, but each word felt like a physical blow. The air thickened around them, heavy with the impossible choice he was presenting.
"We create a vulnerability," he began. "A deliberate, tempting target. We let it be known that you and the baby are being moved to a 'safe house' outside the city. Remote. Seemingly less guarded. An easy mark for him to strike."
Elara pulled her hands away, stepping back as if slapped. Her breath caught in her throat. The blood drained from her face, leaving her skin feeling icy cold.
"Our baby?" she choked out, the words barely a whisper. "You want to use *our baby* as bait? Ronan, have you lost your mind?"
He knelt before her, his strong hands cupping her face, forcing her to look into his eyes. They burned with a fierce, desperate intensity.
"I swear to you, Elara, on my life, on everything I am," he vowed, his voice thick with emotion. "It's a trap within a trap. A calculated risk. The most dangerous gambit, yes, but also the most secure. He will think he has the advantage, but he'll be walking straight into our net."
He explained the layers, the meticulous planning. Elite guards, hand-picked and unseen, would form an impenetrable perimeter. They wouldn't be visible, but they would be there, a silent shield. Trackers, silent and precise, would pinpoint Julian's every move the moment he approached.
"No physical harm will come to either of you," Ronan insisted, his thumbs stroking her cheeks. "I would never, *ever* allow it. This isn't recklessness. This is strategy. This is the only way to end this nightmare permanently, so we can finally live without looking over our shoulders."
Fear still clawed at her, sharp and relentless. How could she agree? How could she willingly place their precious child, their innocent baby, in such terrifying, calculated danger? The thought alone made her stomach churn, threatening to bring up everything she’d eaten.
Her heart hammered, a frantic drum against her ribs. She loved him, completely and irrevocably. She trusted him with her life, with her heart, with their future. But this? This felt different. This was trust on an unimaginable scale.
Trust was a fragile thing, easily shattered, hard to rebuild. This wasn't just about her, or even about Ronan's vendetta. It was about the tiny, helpless life they had created, a life she would die to protect.
This was an impossible demand, a choice that tore her soul in two. The safety of playing it safe, of letting Julian continue his slow, agonizing assault, or the terrifying gamble of trusting Ronan's audacious plan to end it all, potentially putting their child directly in harm's way.
Looking at Ronan, his face etched with grim determination, the weight of the world on his shoulders, she knew she had to choose. Could she gamble everything on his unwavering conviction? Could she place her child's fate entirely in his hands, even if it meant luring a monster to their doorstep? Her breath hitched. The decision felt like a knife twisting in her gut.
