Chapter 44: The Sister's Secret
948 words
Gnawing anxiety had become Elara's constant companion. Sleep offered no true escape. Every time her eyes fluttered open, the harsh glow of her phone screen brought new vitriol.
Online forums seethed. Marcus’s followers, a relentless wave, attacked her character, questioned her motives. They called her a liar, a manipulator, a gold-digger. Her public defense of Dominic had ignited a wildfire.
She scrolled through comments, each word a fresh cut. Dominic had tried to shield her. He’d suggested she step back, let his team handle the backlash. But she refused. This wasn't just about him; it was about truth.
Her jaw ached from clenching. Every muscle in her body felt strung tight. Exhaustion weighed her down, yet rest remained elusive.
Suddenly, her phone buzzed with an incoming call. "Lily," the screen flashed. Elara hesitated, then answered.
"Elara? Are you okay?" Lily's voice was tight, laced with concern. "I'm watching the news. Reading everything online. This is insane."
"I'm fine, Lily," Elara lied, her voice raspy. She pushed a hand through her hair, wincing as her scalp protested.
"No, you're not," Lily countered, her tone firm. "You sound terrible. And you know what? This has gone too far. I… I need to tell you something. Something I should have told you years ago."
Elara frowned. Lily rarely sounded so grave. "What is it?"
"It’s about Marcus," Lily said, her voice dropping to a whisper. "And Dad. And… everything. Can you come over? Please?"
A cold dread began to coil in Elara’s stomach. This wasn't good. "I'll be there in twenty minutes."
Minutes later, pulling up to Lily's small apartment, Elara felt a tremor of unease. Lily’s usually bright eyes held a haunted look. Her hands, usually restless, were clasped tightly in her lap.
Stepping inside, Elara noticed the drawn blinds, the hushed atmosphere. "Lily, what's going on? You're scaring me."
Lily took a deep, shaky breath. "I found it. The recording. I thought I’d lost it, or that I’d imagined it, but I found it last night. I needed to know if it was still there after all these years."
Confusion creased Elara's brow. "What recording? What are you talking about?"
"Marcus," Lily whispered, her gaze distant. "He came to the house after you broke off the engagement the first time. He was furious. Not just angry, Elara. Vicious. He threatened Dad, Mom… he threatened *us*. He said if you didn't come back to him, he'd ruin everything. Our family, our reputation. Your future."
Elara stared, speechless. "He threatened you? Why didn't you tell me?"
"He made me promise. He said he’d make good on his threats against Dad's business if I ever breathed a word. He was so convincing, so terrifying. I was just a kid, Elara. I was scared. I recorded it on my old phone. Just… just in case. I hid it. I thought about deleting it so many times, but something held me back."
Lily stood, her movements stiff. She walked over to a small, dusty box on a shelf, rummaged inside, and pulled out an old, brick-like flip phone. Its screen was cracked, but it still powered on.
"It’s on here," she said, her voice barely audible. "An audio file. I transferred it to my laptop to make sure it was still clear. I've been relistening to it all morning. It’s worse than I remember."
Elara felt a wave of nausea. All these years, Marcus's possessiveness, his control, had been a dark shadow. But threats against her family? That was a different kind of monster.
Lily clicked open her laptop, her fingers trembling slightly as she navigated to a file. A moment of silence stretched, thick with unspoken anxieties, before the low crackle of an old recording filled the room.
Then, Marcus's voice. Cold, hard, devoid of the charming veneer he presented to the world. "You think you can just walk away from me, Elara? You think that's an option?"
Elara flinched. Hearing his voice like that, raw and unfiltered, sent shivers down her spine.
"Your precious father's business, his reputation? It's all tied to you. Mess with me, and I'll make sure it collapses. Your mother's health? She's not as strong as she used to be. A little stress, a little financial worry… it goes a long way, doesn't it?"
Lily squeezed her eyes shut, a tear tracing a path down her cheek. Elara reached for her sister's hand, gripping it tightly. The weight of Lily's secret, and the burden it must have been, settled heavily on Elara's chest.
Marcus's voice continued, a chilling monotone. "I have connections, you know. Powerful ones. People who owe me favors. People who can make problems disappear. Or appear, if need be."
He paused, a sinister chuckle rattling through the speakers. "We've got plans for her, plans she won't even see coming. And if you try to warn her, if you even whisper a word, you'll regret it. This isn't just about me, it's about making an example. Someone wants her gone, and I'm just the one to do it."
The recording ended abruptly, leaving a ringing silence in its wake. The air in the room felt impossibly heavy. Elara’s breath hitched in her throat. Marcus’s words echoed, a venomous promise.
"Someone wants her gone," Elara repeated, her voice a strangled whisper. "He said 'we.' He said 'someone wants her gone.'"
Lily nodded, her eyes wide with fear and relief. "I know. It always bothered me. It wasn't just him. There was always someone else. A bigger game."
Elara stared at the laptop screen, a cold fury building within her. This wasn't just proof of Marcus's manipulation. It was a window into a deeper, darker plot. A conspiracy that extended beyond just Marcus and his petty revenge. The world needed to hear this.
Dominic needed to hear this. This changes everything.
