Chapter 34: The Past Catches Up
907 words
Frustration gnawed at Elara. News of the impending government inspection had plunged Thorne Industries into a frenzy, mirroring the turmoil in her own heart. Lily's rapid decline loomed, a constant, crushing weight. Elara had just made the impossible choice to greenlight the M-5 modulator, a gamble with unimaginable stakes.
A sharp rap on her lab door startled her. Dr. Aris Thorne stood there, a grim set to his mouth. "Elara, there's something you need to see. Legal papers. They were addressed to you, personally, but delivered here."
Accepting the thick envelope, Elara's fingers trembled. Her name, bold and stark, stared back from the plain white. An immediate, visceral fear gripped her. She hadn't seen paper like this since…
Inside, the words blurred. *Summons. Custody petition. Unfit living conditions. Parental neglect.* Her breath hitched. The petitioner's name made the blood drain from her face: Marcus Thorne.
Marcus. Her ex-partner. Leo's half-brother. The man who had twisted her life into a suffocating knot years ago. How dare he? Why now?
Cold dread seeped into her bones. He was resurfacing, a specter from a past she had desperately tried to bury. He knew where she was. He knew about Lily.
Leo found her moments later, slumped against the lab bench, the papers scattered around her. His face, usually a mask of controlled intensity, softened with concern. "Elara? What is it? You look like you've seen a ghost."
She could only point to the documents, her voice failing. Leo picked one up, his brow furrowing as he read. His eyes narrowed, then widened in disbelief as he reached the petitioner's name.
"Marcus?" he roared, slamming the papers onto the bench. "That bastard! What's he playing at?" His knuckles whitened, a muscle twitching in his jaw. "Custody? This is insane!"
"He's using my living situation," Elara managed, her voice hoarse. "Being here, with you. The 'unstable' environment. He even mentioned the 'questionable professional conduct' at Thorne Industries. The anonymous tip… he knows."
Leo ran a hand through his hair, his frustration palpable. "This can't be a coincidence. The inspection, now this. Someone is feeding him information. Someone wants to destroy us."
Remembering Marcus's icy gaze, his controlling nature, Elara shivered. He had always enjoyed wielding power, twisting situations to his advantage. Their past had been a prison, meticulously constructed by his subtle threats and possessive love.
He had groomed her, isolated her, made her believe she was nothing without him. Breaking free had taken every ounce of her will, and even then, she'd fled with nothing but the clothes on her back and a deep-seated fear.
Lily had been her fresh start, her reason for courage. Now, Marcus was threatening to take that away.
Days later, a formal request for an 'informal mediation' arrived. Marcus wanted to meet. Elara felt a wave of nausea. "I don't want to go," she told Leo. "He'll manipulate everything."
"You have to," Leo insisted, though his own face was tight with worry. "Ignoring it only makes you look bad in court. I'll be there. Every step of the way."
Reluctantly, Elara agreed. The meeting was set for a neutral legal office. She dressed conservatively, trying to project an image of calm strength, despite the tremor in her hands.
Walking into the sterile conference room, the sight of Marcus sent a jolt through her. He looked the same – impeccably dressed, a charming, predatory smile playing on his lips. His eyes, however, held a chilling lack of warmth.
"Elara," he purred, rising to greet her. "It's been too long. You look… well. Despite everything."
Leo stepped forward, a protective wall between them. "Cut the pleasantries, Marcus. What do you want?"
Marcus merely chuckled, a low, unsettling sound. "Always so direct, brother. I simply want what's best for Lily. And clearly, Elara, you're not providing it."
His gaze lingered on her, then flickered to the legal papers on the table. "Your current living arrangement, your association with… certain experimental practices. It hardly paints a picture of stability, does it?"
Elara's jaw tightened. He was using everything against her. "My daughter is safe with me. You have no right to interfere."
Marcus leaned forward, his voice dropping to a conspiratorial whisper, yet loud enough for Leo to hear. "I know about Lily's condition, Elara. Not just 'a rare illness.' I know about her advanced mitochondrial depletion. The rapid cellular decay. The prognosis."
Elara's breath hitched. Only a handful of specialists knew those specific terms. How could Marcus possibly have this information? Her heart pounded against her ribs.
"How do you know that?" she demanded, her voice shaking.
He simply smiled, a dangerous glint in his eyes. "I have… connections. People who understand these things. People who are working on advanced remedies, beyond what even Thorne Industries could dream of."
He paused, letting his words sink in. "Imagine, Elara. A way to stabilize Lily's condition. A groundbreaking therapy, not a modulator with 'catastrophic side effects.' Something real. Something that could give her a future."
The sheer audacity, the cruel hope he dangled, made Elara's head spin. "What are you talking about? There's no such thing… not yet."
"Oh, but there is," Marcus countered smoothly. "And I can ensure Lily receives it. But there's a condition, of course."
His gaze pierced her, cold and unwavering. "You leave Leo. You come back to me. You present a unified, stable family unit. And Lily gets her cure. It's that simple, Elara. Her life, for your return."
