Chapter 31: A Father's Vengeance
974 words
Cold dread seeped into Leo's bones. Hayes's voice, calm and confident, echoed in the silent office. 'Thorne Industries, Mr. Thorne. Or the modulator vanishes, along with any hope for your sister.'
Elara gripped his arm, her knuckles white. 'He can't seriously mean it. This is blackmail.'
'Hayes always means it,' Leo rasped, pushing away from the desk. He paced, a restless predator trapped in a cage. 'He tried to steal Clara's designs before. Now he has the actual component.'
How did he get it? That question clawed at Leo's mind. The security around the facility was impenetrable, or so he'd believed. No external breach. No insider with direct access.
Scanning the schematics again, Elara pointed to a rarely used service tunnel. 'This passage… it connects to an old storage unit. Decommissioned years ago.'
Remembering Clara's meticulous notes, Leo’s eyes widened. Clara had used that unit for some experimental equipment storage, equipment too sensitive even for the main lab’s records. Only a handful of people knew about it.
'My father,' Leo breathed, the name a bitter taste. His father had helped Clara set up that auxiliary storage, a place for her truly off-the-books research. It was a private, unmonitored space.
A chill ran down Elara’s spine. 'Are you saying… he could have given Hayes access?'
Leo's jaw clenched. The thought was monstrous, unthinkable. His own father, working against him? Against Clara's legacy? Yet, the pieces clicked into place with horrifying precision. His father's resentment, his distant bitterness since Clara's accident.
'We need to confront him,' Leo declared, his voice hard as stone. 'Now.'
Driving through the city, the tension in the car was a living thing. Each street light seemed to mock Leo with its indifferent glow. He replayed conversations with his father, searching for a hint, a hidden agenda he’d missed.
Arriving at the secluded estate, the gates swung open silently. A familiar figure stood by the koi pond, his back to them. White hair, shoulders slightly stooped.
'Father,' Leo said, his voice flat.
Martin Thorne turned, his expression unreadable. His eyes, once warm, now held a cold, analytical gaze. 'Leo. Elara. What an unexpected visit.'
'Cut the pleasantries,' Elara interjected, her usual calm replaced by a fierce urgency. 'Where's the modulator? What have you done?'
Martin's lips thinned. 'Blunt as ever, Miss Hayes.' He paused, a flicker of something dark in his eyes. 'You think I've 'done' something? I merely facilitated a transaction.'
Leo stepped forward, his fists clenching. 'You're working with Sterling Hayes? After everything he's tried to do to Thorne Industries? To Clara's memory?'
A harsh laugh escaped Martin. 'Clara's memory? You speak of Clara's memory as if you cherish it, Leo. You, who failed her when it mattered most.'
The accusation hung in the air, a poison gas. Leo flinched as if struck. 'I didn't fail her! I tried everything!'
'Everything?' Martin scoffed, shaking his head slowly. 'You were so busy chasing your corporate empire, securing Thorne Industries, that you neglected the very heart of her research. You couldn't save her, couldn't even bring her back from the brink of that coma.'
His father’s words were daggers, each one twisting in an old wound. Leo felt a burning rage ignite within him, but he forced it down. This wasn't about his pain. This was about Clara.
'Why, Father?' Leo pushed, his voice strained. 'Why help Hayes destroy what she built?'
Martin Thorne’s eyes hardened, a chilling resolve setting in. 'Destroy? No, Leo. I'm helping Hayes dismantle it. Bit by bit. Piece by piece. You see, I don't want profit. I want justice. A twisted justice, perhaps, but justice nonetheless.'
He stepped closer, his voice dropping to a low, venomous whisper. 'That facility, your precious research lab… it's a monument to her failure, and yours. A constant reminder of what you couldn't do. I intend to level it.'
'But Hayes wants Thorne Industries!' Elara protested. 'He wants to own it, not destroy it.'
'Sterling Hayes is a means to an end,' Martin replied, a cruel smile playing on his lips. 'He wants the company. I want something far more satisfying. I want to see you stripped of everything, Leo. Everything you value, everything you built on Clara's genius.'
Leo stared, aghast. 'This is insane. You think destroying Thorne Industries, destroying Clara's work, will bring her back?'
'It will bring *me* peace,' Martin retorted, his voice rising, a tremor of long-suppressed anguish surfacing. 'Watching you flounder, watching your empire crumble, will be the only balm for the wound you left festering.'
His father’s face, usually so composed, now contorted with a grief and bitterness Leo had never seen. It was a face warped by obsession, by a desperate need for retribution.
'You blame me,' Leo whispered, the realization hitting him with crushing force. 'You always blamed me.'
'Who else?' Martin challenged, his eyes blazing. 'You were her brother, her protector. You promised to always look out for her. And then… nothing. Just that empty lab, that empty promise.'
A cold sweat broke out on Leo's brow. His own father, driven by such a profound, misguided rage. This wasn't just about business. It was deeply personal.
'Hayes only has part of the plan,' Martin continued, a chilling glint in his eye. 'He thinks he holds all the cards with that modulator. A mere trifle.'
Elara’s breath hitched. 'What are you talking about?'
'The modulator is just leverage for the company takeover,' Martin explained, a triumphant sneer on his face. 'But my true objective… my masterstroke… is far more devastating.'
He savored the fear in their eyes. 'You built that facility on a foundation of secrecy, Leo. All those experimental treatments, those unapproved protocols, hidden away from the world. Imagine what would happen if the world knew.'
Leo’s blood ran cold. He knew exactly what would happen. Regulatory bodies, public outrage, lawsuits that would bury Thorne Industries forever. Not just the company, but every single researcher, every project. Clara’s legacy, twisted and exposed.
'I have compiled every single illicit detail,' Martin revealed, his voice laced with triumph. 'Every questionable trial, every suppressed data point. The complete, unedited truth about the facility.'
'You wouldn't,' Leo croaked, his voice barely a whisper. This wasn't just revenge; it was an act of total annihilation. 'That would destroy everything Clara worked for, everything she believed in!'
'Precisely,' Martin stated, his eyes devoid of remorse. 'And when it all comes crashing down, Leo, you will have nowhere left to hide from your failures. The world will see you for what you truly are: a man who couldn't protect his sister, and then tried to profit from her ghost.'
He smiled, a truly unsettling, chilling expression. 'And my final act of vengeance? It will ensure that not only is Thorne Industries gone, but your name, Leo Thorne, becomes synonymous with medical malpractice and corporate deceit. A legacy befitting your true character.'
The weight of his father’s betrayal pressed down on Leo, heavier than any corporate battle he’d ever fought. This wasn't about money for Martin. It was about tearing down his son, brick by painful brick. And he held the blueprint for total destruction.
