Chapter 43 of 50
Chapter 43: A Price Too High
911 words
Frustration clawed at Alaric’s throat. Jeremy Finch, his key witness, had vanished like smoke. No calls, no texts, just an empty apartment and a chilling silence.
Time was a luxury he didn't possess. Luna’s condition worsened with each passing day. The slow grind of the courts felt like a death knell.
Sitting in his office, the city lights blurred beyond the panoramic window. His legal team had exhausted every lead. They were back to square one, worse than square one, actually.
Then, a message arrived.
Serena Vance requested a private meeting. No lawyers. Just the two of them. A chill snaked down Alaric’s spine. He knew this wasn't a surrender.
“She’s playing a dangerous game,” Liam, his head lawyer, warned. “Don’t go, Alaric. It’s a trap.”
Alaric’s jaw hardened. “What choice do I have? Luna can’t wait for justice to be served.”
Minutes later, he found himself across a polished mahogany table from Serena. Her eyes, cold and calculating, met his. A predatory smile touched her lips.
“Cut the pleasantries, Serena,” Alaric stated, his voice devoid of warmth. “What do you want?”
Leaning back, she steepled her fingers. “Simple, Alaric. I have a proposition. A way out of this… unpleasantness for both of us.”
Alaric scoffed. “Unpleasantness? You’re trying to ruin lives.”
Her smile didn’t falter. “My challenge against Elara’s contract. It’s draining your resources. It’s halting crucial medical funding. And without your star witness, your counter-suit against me for forgery is dead in the water, isn’t it?”
A muscle twitched in Alaric’s jaw. She knew. She had to be behind Jeremy’s disappearance.
“Here’s the deal,” Serena continued, her voice soft, yet razor-sharp. “Drop your lawsuit against me. Publicly retract all accusations of forgery and manipulation.”
Alaric stared, disbelief warring with a terrible understanding. “And in return?”
“I withdraw my challenge against Elara Vance’s contract,” she said, her gaze unwavering. “Luna’s medical funding will be immediately unfrozen. The contract stands. All as if this never happened.”
Silence descended, heavy and suffocating. The air grew thick with unspoken implications. He would save Luna and Elara.
But at what cost?
He would be admitting, by omission, to the validity of her claims. His name would remain synonymous with fraud. His reputation, meticulously built over decades, would be forever stained.
“You want me to sacrifice my integrity,” Alaric murmured, his voice low and dangerous.
“I want you to make a choice, Alaric,” Serena corrected, her tone sugary sweet. “Your name, or their lives. Pretty simple, wouldn’t you say?”
His mind raced, desperate for another path. There was none. Jeremy was gone. The courts were too slow. Luna’s time was running out.
Sweat beaded on his brow. His hands clenched beneath the table. The weight of his decision pressed down on him, crushing.
“I accept,” he finally choked out, the words tasting like ash. “I’ll drop the suit. But if anything happens to Luna, Serena, I swear to God…”
She merely smiled, a triumphant glint in her eyes. “Excellent. I’ll have my lawyers draft the agreement. I expect it signed by morning.”
Leaving Serena’s office, Alaric felt a profound emptiness. He had traded his honor for their survival. It was a deal with the devil, and he knew he’d just signed away a piece of his soul.
Elara had been waiting for him. She saw the defeat in his eyes, the slump of his shoulders, before he even spoke a word.
“What happened?” she asked, her voice hushed, her heart hammering.
Alaric recounted the meeting, his words clipped, each syllable a heavy burden. He explained the impossible choice, the sacrifice he’d made.
“It’s the only way, Elara,” he concluded, his gaze fixed on some distant point. “Luna needs her treatment. Your contract needs to stand. My name… my name will recover. Eventually.”
Listening, Elara’s world tilted. His name. His reputation. The very foundation of his business, his life’s work. He was giving it all up for her. For Luna.
Her sister's future, secured. But Alaric’s future, irrevocably tainted.
A sickening wave of guilt washed over her. She was the reason for all of this. Her presence, her contract, had brought this storm down upon him.
Alaric, the man who had shown her kindness, given her a home, fought for her sister, was now sacrificing his very identity to protect them.
This wasn't just about Luna anymore. This was about Alaric’s integrity. Serena didn’t just want the contract invalidated; she wanted to break him.
Elara’s mind worked furiously. There had to be another way. A way to protect Luna, and protect Alaric from this devastating compromise.
Serena’s entire challenge revolved around Elara’s contract. If the contract ceased to exist, there would be no basis for the challenge.
A cold, hard resolve settled in Elara’s chest. She couldn't let Alaric make this sacrifice. She would find a way. A drastic step, perhaps, but one that would free him.
She looked at Alaric, his face etched with weariness and a quiet despair. He had done so much. Now it was her turn. She would remove the target from his back.
Taking a deep breath, Elara made her decision. A painful, terrifying decision. She would terminate her contract with Alaric. Publicly. She would remove the very object Serena sought to destroy, thereby nullifying the challenge and freeing Alaric to fight Serena without the weight of their lives on his shoulders.
It meant stepping into the unknown, losing Alaric’s protection, but it was the only way to save them all.
