Chapter 37: An Unholy Muse

947 words

A sterile chill greeted Elara as she stepped into Serena’s studio. Overhead, massive skylights poured clinical light across a pristine, minimalist space. Sculptures of cold metal and glass stood like silent sentinels, reflecting the harsh brightness. Serena waited. She sat on a plush velvet chaise lounge, a vision of composure in a silk dress that shimmered like liquid moonlight. Her gaze, sharp and assessing, pierced Elara. Alaric stood by a large window, his back mostly to them. His shoulders were stiff, his jaw tight. He was a statue carved from regret, his presence a heavy, unspoken accusation. Swallowing hard, Elara moved to her easel. The canvas felt like a judge’s bench. Her palette, usually a source of comfort, now felt like a weapon she was unwilling to wield. Finding Serena’s ‘unseen beauty’ seemed an impossible task. Serena was beautiful, yes. Her features were sculpted, her eyes a mesmerizing blue. But it was a flawless, cold beauty, like a diamond – brilliant, but devoid of warmth. Dr. Thorne had spoken of something deeper, something hidden. “Are you quite ready, Elara?” Serena’s voice was smooth, laced with a saccharine sweetness that grated on Elara’s nerves. Elara nodded, picking up a charcoal stick. Her fingers trembled slightly. She avoided Serena’s gaze, focusing on the blank canvas. “Don’t be shy,” Serena purred. “Look at me. You need to see me, truly see me, for this little… project.” Forcing herself, Elara met Serena’s eyes. There was a challenge there, an undeniable triumph. Serena was enjoying this, reveling in Elara’s discomfort, in the power she held over her. Trying to ignore the prickle of heat on her cheeks, Elara began to sketch. Lines formed, tentative and unsure. Serena’s perfect profile emerged, but it was just a likeness, a surface. “Alaric, darling,” Serena called out, her voice suddenly playful. “Come closer. Elara might need inspiration.” Alaric didn't move. He remained by the window, a silent, brooding shadow. Elara felt a pang of something she couldn't name – pity? Frustration? Shame? “He's always been a man of few words, hasn't he?” Serena mused, her eyes still locked on Elara. “Especially when he feels trapped.” The barb was subtle, but its intent was clear. Elara’s hand faltered. She glanced at Alaric, catching his eye for a fleeting moment. His expression was unreadable, a mixture of anguish and a deep, weary resignation. “You know, Elara,” Serena continued, shifting slightly on the chaise, her pose deliberate, “Alaric and I… we have a rather complicated history. Much more intricate than he lets on, I assure you.” Elara kept sketching, trying to project indifference, but her pulse quickened. She needed to ignore this, focus on Lily. Focus on Amelia. “He paints a very charming picture now, doesn't he?” Serena’s tone turned wistful, almost melancholic. “The tortured artist, seeking solace. But there was a time… he was a different man altogether.” Her voice dropped, becoming conspiratorial. “He wasn't always so noble. Not so self-sacrificing.” Elara pressed her charcoal harder, the line on the canvas deepening. She refused to give Serena the satisfaction of a reaction. “You see, I was his muse long before you came along,” Serena said, a hint of steel entering her voice. “His first. His… obsession. He consumed me, Elara. My dreams, my ambition. He wanted to own every part of me.” A small, bitter laugh escaped Serena’s lips. “He loved the idea of me, the ethereal beauty he could mold. But the real me? The one with her own thoughts, her own desires? He couldn't stand it.” “He saw me as a blank canvas,” Serena continued, her voice gaining an edge. “Something to project his own twisted vision onto. He didn't see *me*. He only saw the reflection of his own genius, his own demons.” Elara's breath hitched. This was a venomous stream, designed to poison her perception of Alaric. Yet, a part of her, a tiny, rebellious part, couldn't help but listen. “You should have seen the way he looked at me back then,” Serena said, her eyes narrowing. “Possessive. Obsessive. It wasn't love, Elara. It was a hunger. A dark, consuming need to dominate, to control.” She leaned forward, her gaze piercing. “And when I finally broke free, when I refused to be his captive creation any longer, he… he shattered me. He tried to destroy my career, my reputation. He turned everyone against me.” Alaric remained silent by the window, his back still mostly turned, but Elara could feel the tension radiating from him. Was any of this true? Could the man she knew, the man who had fought so hard for her, be capable of such cruelty? “He claimed I betrayed him,” Serena scoffed, a dry, humorless sound. “But all I did was refuse to be consumed. And his response? He broke my heart, Elara. He tore it to pieces and then walked away, leaving me to pick up the shattered fragments alone.” Serena’s eyes, though still beautiful, were now cold and hard, devoid of any genuine sadness. “He has a way of twisting things, you see. Of making himself the victim. He’s very good at it.” “Don’t you agree, Alaric?” Serena called out, her voice sharp, cutting through the heavy air. “Or has Elara truly tamed the beast within you?” Alaric flinched, a subtle tremor running through his rigid posture. He still said nothing. His silence felt like both a confirmation and a desperate plea. Elara’s charcoal snapped in her hand. The sound echoed in the vast studio. Her mind reeled, a storm of doubt and fear building within her. Serena’s words, bitter and twisted, had found their mark.
