Chapter 47 of 50
Chapter 47: Race Against Time
907 words
A chill wind swept through the hidden passage, a stark contrast to the searing terror gripping Ronan's chest.
Elias Vance's words echoed, a monstrous pronouncement: *“He’s planted an explosive device.”*
Anya's breath hitched, her eyes wide, reflecting the flickering emergency light. Her hand flew to her mouth, stifling a gasp.
Ronan felt the blood drain from his face. Not just the deed, not just the estate. Lives.
An explosion. Here. Now.
“Where?” Ronan’s voice was a raw whisper, barely audible over the distant murmur of the approaching auction crowd.
Elias cowered, shaking uncontrollably. “I… I don’t know the exact location. He only said it would trigger if his plans were ‘thwarted.’ A fail-safe. Near the… the cavern entrance, he hinted.”
Cavern entrance. Thorne’s obsession. The illegal activities. It all clicked into place with horrifying clarity.
Anya gripped Ronan’s arm, her fingers digging in. “Ronan, we have to stop it. The auction. Everything.”
“Stopping it means confirming Thorne’s plans *are* thwarted,” Ronan countered, his mind racing, trying to find a loophole, a different path. “It means the bomb goes off.”
His gaze met Anya’s. Fear, cold and absolute, mirrored in her eyes.
They had minutes. Maybe less. The auction was set to begin.
Sounds of guests arriving, champagne flutes clinking, drifted down from above. A macabre soundtrack to their impending doom.
“What if we expose him now?” Anya urged, her voice strained. “Before the auction even starts? We tell everyone. The police.”
Ronan shook his head slowly. “Thorne is meticulous. He’d have a contingency for that. He’d deny everything. He’d say we’re trying to sabotage him for personal gain, given our history.”
“And the bomb?” she pressed, her voice cracking.
“Exposure during the auction is different,” Ronan mused, a desperate plan forming. “He’s got eyes on him. He can’t just vanish. He’d be trapped.”
But the bomb. The looming threat of utter destruction still hung heavy.
Thorne’s plan was simple: acquire the deed, secure the caverns, execute his illegal enterprise. The bomb was a scorched-earth policy, ensuring no one else could ever use the estate if he failed.
“We proceed with the auction,” Ronan stated, his voice firm despite the tremor in his hands. “We use it to expose him. It’s our only chance to catch him red-handed, with witnesses.”
Anya’s brow furrowed. “But the bomb… If we expose him, that *is* thwarting him.”
“We’ll need a way to disarm it simultaneously,” Ronan explained, his brain working at hyper-speed, connecting pieces. “We need to buy ourselves time once we make our move.”
“Who do we trust?” she asked, her voice barely above a whisper.
Ronan thought of his security detail. Trained, loyal, utterly discreet. Men he’d handpicked over years.
He pulled out his phone, his fingers flying across the screen, composing a message. It couldn’t be direct. Thorne would have surveillance, listening devices.
It had to be a code. Something only his head of security, Marcus, would understand.
“I’m sending a coded message to Marcus,” Ronan explained, showing Anya the draft. “A 'technical malfunction' alert. It will initiate a sweep protocol for unlisted devices, focusing on the lower levels, near the old utility access points.”
Anya read the message. “'Initiate 'Contingency Delta: Structural Integrity Check on Sub-level Gamma, Zone 7. Prioritize anomalous energy signatures near historical excavation sites.'”
“Sub-level Gamma, Zone 7 is the cavern entrance,” Ronan confirmed, his jaw tight. “Historical excavation sites is a nod to the old mining routes he’s been obsessed with. Anomalous energy signatures is for the bomb’s signal.”
He hit send. The message disappeared into the digital ether, carrying their lives, and the lives of everyone in the estate, with it.
Now, it was a race.
They had to get Elias out, ensure his safety, and then prepare for the most dangerous performance of their lives.
Elias, pale and trembling, clutched at Ronan’s sleeve. “You… you have to save my family.”
“We will,” Anya promised, her voice unwavering. “Just tell us everything else you know about Thorne’s operations. Any details. Every detail counts now.”
Elias nodded, his eyes darting around the confined space, fear still a living thing inside him. He began to speak again, hushed words painting a darker picture of Thorne’s ruthless ambition.
Ronan listened, his mind already formulating the accusation, the evidence, the exact moment he would bring Thorne down.
He visualized the grand hall, the expectant faces, Thorne’s smug smile.
He would shatter it all.
But first, they had to ensure the bomb wouldn't shatter them.
Ronan gripped Anya’s hand, a silent vow passing between them.
Their only path led directly into the fire.
They emerged from the secret passage, stepping back into the brightly lit corridors, leaving Elias in a secure hidden compartment with instructions for Ronan’s personal guards to watch over him.
The sounds of the auction hall grew louder, the chatter of the elite, oblivious to the ticking clock that threatened to erase them all.
Ronan squared his shoulders. Anya took a deep breath. The performance was about to begin.
