Pain flared through Elara's side. She gasped, stumbling against a heavy server rack. Her vision blurred, but a fierce resolve hardened her jaw.
Sterling’s men had dragged her here, into the heart of the collapsing data center.
Blood bloomed dark against her pristine white lab coat. She gripped the wound, pushing back against the dizziness.
“You won’t get away with this, Sterling,” Elara rasped, her voice raw but unwavering.
Sterling watched her, a cruel smirk playing on his lips. His expensive suit was unrumpled, his silver hair immaculate, a stark contrast to the chaos erupting around them.
“My dear Elara,” he purred, stepping closer. “Already, the data is scrubbing. Soon, there will be nothing left. No trace.”
His gaze drifted to Kaelen, crumpled on the floor nearby. Kaelen lay motionless, his face ashen, the horror of his uncle’s betrayal still etched into his features.
Only moments ago, Kaelen had seen it. The ledger entry. The undeniable proof of his mother’s murder.
It shattered him, more completely than his father’s death ever had. A silent scream tore through his mind, a primal agony.
He wanted to move. Needed to reach Elara. His muscles screamed in protest, his limbs heavy, unresponsive.
“Kaelen!” Elara yelled, pushing off the server rack. Her legs threatened to buckle.
She took a wobbly step towards him, her eyes pleading. Sterling’s men moved to intercept.
“Leave her,” Sterling commanded, his voice cold. “She can watch her precious Kaelen crumble.”
Around them, the room groaned. Sparks flew from exposed wiring. The whirring of the servers grew erratic, a dying gasp.
Crimson light pulsed from emergency indicators, painting the desperate scene in a hellish glow.
Kaelen’s fingers twitched. The image of his mother’s face, vibrant and loving, flashed behind his eyes. Then, the grim ledger entry, his uncle’s name stark against the digital backdrop.
He grit his teeth. His mother. His father. All gone, at the hands of the man who pretended to be family.
This wasn’t just about his fortune anymore. This was personal. This was vengeance.
Pushing through the fog of shock and pain, Kaelen forced himself to stir. A groan escaped his lips. His head throbbed, his vision swam.
Sterling scoffed. “Still alive, nephew? A shame. But not for long.”
Elara lunged, a desperate, clumsy attack. One of Sterling’s men easily caught her, twisting her arm behind her back. She cried out.
“Let her go!” Kaelen roared, finding a sudden surge of adrenaline. He pushed himself up, leaning heavily on a console.
His legs shook. Every muscle screamed.
Sterling watched with detached amusement. “Such defiance. It truly runs in the family.”
“You’re a monster,” Elara spat, struggling against her captor. Her eyes blazed with a fire that defied her pain.
Kaelen felt a renewed strength, fueled by her courage. He couldn't let her fight alone. Not now, not ever.
He scanned the room. The data scrub was still active, but slower now. The system was failing. There had to be a way.
A small, unassuming terminal caught his eye. It was older, a legacy system, likely overlooked by Sterling's newer, more aggressive data wipe protocols.
“The backup,” Kaelen muttered, a desperate hope igniting within him. “There has to be a local cache.”
Sterling’s eyes narrowed. He hadn't anticipated such resilience. Or such specific knowledge.
“Stop him!” Sterling bellowed. His men released Elara, pushing her roughly aside, and rushed towards Kaelen.
Elara fell, her head striking a metal plate. Darkness threatened to consume her. But she fought it, pushing herself up on her elbows.
Kaelen moved with a desperate speed he didn't know he possessed. He slammed his palm onto the terminal’s dusty keyboard, fingers flying across the keys.
His heart hammered against his ribs. The emergency lights continued their frantic pulse.
He typed a sequence, a forgotten override code from his early days at Sterling Corp. A legacy backdoor, a ghost in the machine.
“No!” Sterling screamed, finally losing his composure. He knew exactly what Kaelen was doing.
One of Sterling’s guards reached Kaelen, grabbing his shoulder. Kaelen swung an elbow blindly, connecting with the man’s jaw.
The guard staggered back, surprised. Kaelen didn't stop, his eyes glued to the screen.
He hit enter. A green progress bar appeared, rapidly filling.
