Chapter 45 of 50
Chapter 45: For Us, For Truth
940 words
A chill settled in the air, sharper than any winter frost. Evie watched Asher, his jaw tight, his eyes distant. Their decision, made moments ago, felt like a heavy stone in her gut.
He had chosen truth. He had chosen *them*.
“How do we do this?” Her voice was a low murmur, barely audible.
Asher turned, his gaze finally meeting hers. “Carefully. We expose Alaric, but we don’t condemn Lily.”
It was the impossible equation. The 'Chimera' project was Lily’s only perceived hope. Exposing it meant shattering that hope, or worse, proving it dangerous to her.
“We focus on the unethical practices,” Evie suggested, her mind already racing. “The unapproved trials. The deception. Alaric’s abuse of power. Not on Lily’s condition directly.”
Nodding slowly, Asher moved towards his desk, pulling out a hidden key. He unlocked a drawer, retrieving a secure drive. “All the files I’ve managed to copy. Alaric’s internal communications. Early research notes. The financial irregularities.”
His fingers typed quickly, a flurry of precise movements. He projected a complex network diagram onto the wall, showing Alaric’s various shell companies, his influence within the regulatory bodies, his control over key personnel.
“He’s deeply entrenched,” Asher stated, a grim line to his lips. “Taking him down isn’t just about proving the drug is dangerous. It’s about dismantling his entire corrupt structure.”
Evie studied the map. Lines of red connected Alaric to influential figures, to obscure offshore accounts. It was a web, vast and intricate.
“Who do we trust?” she asked. “The board will be compromised. The regulators are bought.”
He paused, his eyes narrowing. “There’s an investigative journalist, Marcus Thorne. He’s relentless. Doesn’t back down from a fight. And he has contacts in certain government oversight committees who aren’t on Alaric’s payroll. Yet.”
“Thorne. I’ve heard of him.” Evie remembered the name from old news stories, a reporter who’d brought down a pharmaceutical giant years ago. “He’s aggressive. If we go to him, there’s no turning back. The story will explode.”
“Exactly,” Asher confirmed. “That’s what we need. Something so loud, so undeniable, Alaric can’t bury it. But we need to control the narrative. Frame it properly.”
Their plan began to form, piece by agonizing piece. They would leak the initial findings of the 'Chimera' project, emphasizing the lack of regulatory oversight and the dangerous experimental nature of the drug. They would present it as a systemic failure, a corporate greed driven by a reckless CEO, before any mention of specific patients.
“We need to make sure the focus is on Alaric’s crimes against humanity, his disregard for safety, not Lily’s illness,” Evie stressed. “We highlight the potential for widespread harm, the ethical breaches.”
Asher agreed, his gaze hard. “We’ll send an anonymous tip to Thorne, along with a curated selection of documents. Enough to pique his interest, make him start digging. He’ll connect the dots. Then, when he’s deeply invested, we’ll provide the full picture, including the link to Lily, but carefully framed as Alaric’s final, most abhorrent act of desperation and manipulation.”
“It’s a dangerous gamble,” Evie murmured, her heart hammering against her ribs. “If Thorne gets ahead of himself, or misinterprets the data, Lily could be caught in the crossfire.”
“We have to trust him to be thorough. And we have to give him enough information to be thorough, without revealing everything at once.” Asher exhaled slowly. “We control the drip. We manage the flow of information.”
Days blurred into nights. They worked in his secluded study, the only sound the click of keyboards and the soft whir of servers. Evie, with her sharp analytical mind, cross-referenced documents, highlighted inconsistencies, and flagged key pieces of evidence. Asher, with his intimate knowledge of Alaric’s operations, identified the weak points, the vulnerabilities in his armor.
They meticulously compiled a dossier, a damning indictment of Alaric’s entire career. Financial records, corrupted lab reports, falsified approval documents. Each file was a nail in Alaric’s coffin, but each also carried a risk for Lily.
“This one,” Evie pointed to a specific file on the screen. “The original patent application for Chimera. It explicitly states the drug's proposed action and lists potential side effects that were later downplayed or removed from subsequent reports. It's proof Alaric knew the risks from the start.”
Asher leaned in, studying the document. “Crucial. This ties everything together. His intent, his deception. It shows he purposefully obscured the dangers.”
They spent hours crafting the anonymous email, ensuring it was untraceable, filled with tantalizing breadcrumbs for Thorne. They attached the most damning initial documents, enough to send a seasoned journalist into a frenzy of investigation. The original patent application was at the top of their list.
“Ready?” Asher asked, hovering over the 'send' button. His face was etched with a mixture of resolve and dread.
Evie placed a hand on his arm, her grip firm. “Ready. For us. For truth.”
He pressed the button. The email vanished into the digital ether. A wave of both relief and terror washed over them. The clock had started ticking.
They spent the next few hours double-checking their remaining evidence, organizing it for the next phase of their leak. Asher opened the encrypted folder labeled “Chimera Project - Full Disclosure.” He scrolled through the list of documents, confirming everything was in place.
His brow furrowed. He scrolled again, slower this time. A cold dread began to seep into his veins. “Evie,” he said, his voice taut with sudden alarm.
She looked up from her own screen, her eyes questioning. “What is it?”
“The original patent application. It’s not here.” He pointed at the empty space where the file should have been. “It’s gone.”
