Chapter 28: A Mother's Plea
948 words
Static filled the air between them. Atlas's raw confession hung heavy.
A toxic fog blurred Clara's moral compass. His eyes, usually so guarded, now held a frantic desperation she’d never witnessed.
He truly feared for his life. Her father's life, too.
Escaping meant leaving her father to a potentially fatal fate. It meant abandoning Atlas to a powerful blackmailer.
Staying meant becoming complicit. She would be an active participant in the very deception she despised.
Clara’s mind reeled. Every fiber of her being screamed to run, to expose everything.
Yet, the image of her frail father flickered in her thoughts. His pale face. The weak grip of his hand in hers.
Atlas’s voice, hoarse with terror, echoed. "He knows everything, Clara. Every move. He’ll stop the treatment. He’ll destroy us both."
She saw the truth of his words. The cold, brutal reality of their predicament.
Her phone vibrated, a jarring disruption. 'Mom' flashed on the screen.
A jolt of anxiety shot through her. What if her mother had heard something? What if the blackmailer had already reached her?
Swallowing hard, Clara answered. Her voice, a little shaky, came out. "Hi, Mom."
"Clara, darling!" Her mother's voice, usually laced with worry, was bright. Overjoyed.
Relief, pure and unadulterated, poured through the line. It was a sound Clara hadn't heard in what felt like years.
"I have such wonderful news! Your father... he’s doing so much better!"
A tight knot in Clara’s chest loosened, then immediately constricted again. Better? How much better?
"The doctors are amazed," her mother continued, oblivious to Clara’s internal turmoil. "They said the new experimental treatment, the one Atlas arranged, is working wonders."
Clara’s breath hitched. Atlas. His name. His arrangement.
This was the care Atlas had secured. The care now held hostage by the blackmailer. The very life support that tethered her father to this world.
"His color is back. He even ate a full meal today!" Her mother’s laughter, light and free, was a sound Clara hadn't dared to dream of.
Each joyous word felt like a fresh cut. A deeper wound.
Clara had wanted to expose Atlas, to tear down his empire of lies. To free herself from his manipulative orbit.
But that empire was currently funding her father’s recovery. It was literally keeping him alive.
“Mom, that’s… that’s incredible,” Clara managed, her voice thick with unshed tears. Tears of relief, yes, but mostly of crushing guilt. A hollow ache bloomed in her chest.
“It truly is a miracle, sweetie. Atlas has been an angel, truly. Sponsoring all of it. Such a kind, generous man."
Kind. Generous. The words tasted like ash in Clara’s mouth. They were a bitter irony.
Atlas, the man who had lied, manipulated, created a counterfeit world. Now, out of sheer terror, he had confessed. And in doing so, he was keeping her father alive.
Her mother continued, her voice radiating warmth, recounting details of her father's renewed strength. "He even sent someone by today. A very kind gentleman, Dr. Hayes, I believe. Said he was here to follow up on the new experimental medications."
Clara froze. Dr. Hayes? That name. It sent a shiver down her spine, a cold premonition.
"He was so charming, Clara. A true gentleman. He promised to personally expedite some special medications from an overseas lab. Said they would really boost your father’s recovery even further."
Her mother’s description painted a vivid picture. Charming. Gentleman. Expediting special medications.
Victor Hayes. The blackmailer. The architect of this entire, horrifying scheme.
A cold dread, far deeper than any before, seeped into Clara’s bones. He wasn’t just holding Atlas hostage. He wasn’t just threatening from the shadows.
He was inside. Inside their lives. Inside the very hospital caring for her father. Directly involved in her father’s 'recovery'.
Her father’s improvement, the life-saving treatment, all of it was a puppet show. A cruel, calculated charade.
Held by invisible strings in the blackmailer's hands. He wasn't just threatening to stop the treatment. He was actively involved in it. Controlling it.
Manipulating it. Every dosage. Every report. Every hope for recovery.
The 'kind man' was a viper, coiled around her family. Not merely watching, but actively injecting his venom.
Clara's grip on the phone tightened. Her knuckles went white. Her jaw clenched so hard it ached.
Exposing Atlas now would not just stop her father's treatment. It would unleash Victor Hayes directly on her family. With no shield, no buffer.
This was no longer about lies or art. This was about survival. A desperate, terrifying fight for every breath her father took.
