Chapter 50: The Unfinished Canvas
996 words
Burning plastic stung Aria’s nostrils. Thick, black plumes curled from the ceiling, obscuring the gallery’s once-pristine art. Her throat burned with every shallow breath. Panic clawed at her. She pressed a hand against her mouth, trying to filter the acrid air.
Flames licked at a velvet curtain in the far corner. A low, rhythmic beeping cut through the crackle and roar.
Her eyes darted to the small, metallic device strapped to a pedestal displaying a charred sculpture. The digital counter blinked relentlessly: 00:02:47.
Two minutes and forty-seven seconds. Her heart hammered against her ribs, a frantic bird trapped in a cage.
Outside, Xander stared at the tablet screen, the video feed of Aria’s terrifying prison burning into his retinas. Elias Thorne’s smug face filled the smaller corner frame, a predator enjoying his hunt.
“Tick-tock, Xander,” Elias purred, his voice an oily silk. “The choice is yours. Leo’s life… or hers.”
Leo. His son. The image of the boy’s pale, still face flashed behind Xander’s eyes. Doctors had given him hours, maybe less, without the experimental blood component Elias possessed.
“You sick bastard!” Xander’s knuckles whitened, gripping his phone. His voice was a guttural growl.
Elias chuckled, unperturbed. “I prefer ‘visionary.’ I’m simply demonstrating the true cost of love. A man’s devotion divided. Fascinating, isn’t it?”
Xander’s gaze flickered between the two feeds. Aria, coughing, her eyes wide with terror, scanning the inferno for an escape. Leo, hooked to a maze of tubes, his chest barely rising.
One life. One choice.
Sweat beaded on Xander’s forehead, trickling into his eyes. His mind raced, a whirlwind of impossible calculations. He had called every contact, pulled every string, but the component was unique, synthesized by Thorne Enterprises. Only Elias had it.
“What do you want, Elias? Tell me!” Xander pleaded, his voice raw.
“The component is already being prepared,” Elias said, a satisfied smirk playing on his lips. “A private jet is fueled. It will be delivered to you directly if you choose Leo. But the moment you make that decision, the gallery’s security system, already compromised, will lock down, sealing Aria inside permanently.”
Xander’s breath hitched. He knew Elias wasn't bluffing. This was his game, his twisted canvas of control.
His eyes narrowed, watching Aria stumble, her vision blurring from the smoke. She was trying to break a window, but the reinforced glass wouldn’t yield.
“You have less than two minutes, Xander,” Elias reminded him, his voice dripping with false concern. “Such a shame. She was quite the artist, wasn’t she? A broken canvas, indeed.”
Aria collapsed, her chest heaving. The timer glared: 00:01:38.
One minute, thirty-eight seconds. Not enough time to get to her, even if he knew the building’s layout. Not enough time to even explain.
His heart tore in two. A primal scream echoed in his mind. Save his child, condemning the woman he loved. Save the woman he loved, letting his child die.
Every fiber of his being screamed to save Aria. To scoop her up, pull her from the flames, feel her heartbeat against his own. But Leo… Leo was his blood, his legacy. A future unlived.
“Make the call, Xander,” Elias urged, his tone hardening. “Tell my assistant. Your decision, broadcast to the world.”
Xander’s hand trembled as he reached for the communicator. His fingers hovered over the ‘call’ button. The faces of Leo and Aria swam before his eyes, blurring into a single, agonizing question mark.
“No,” he whispered, the word barely audible. “There has to be another way.”
Elias laughed, a harsh, grating sound. “There isn’t. This is the only way. A masterpiece of sacrifice. Who will you choose to honor with your grief?”
Inside the gallery, Aria pushed herself up, her legs wobbly. She pressed her hand against the burning wall, desperate. The heat was becoming unbearable, radiating through her clothes, searing her skin.
She looked at the timer. 00:00:59.
Less than a minute. Her life, ticking away.
Suddenly, a faint sound, like a distant bang, reached her ears through the smoke. Was it Xander? Was he trying to get in? Hope, fragile and fleeting, flared in her chest.
Then the timer flashed: 00:00:30.
Xander’s jaw clenched. He couldn’t. He couldn’t abandon either of them. His gaze fell upon a small, intricate device in his pocket, something he’d been working on, a failsafe for Thorne’s usual traps. It was a long shot, a desperate gamble. It wasn’t meant for this scale, for a bomb of this magnitude, but it was all he had.
He pulled it out, his fingers fumbling with the tiny wires. This wouldn’t save Aria directly from the fire, but it might… it *might* disrupt the bomb’s signal, sending a false positive to Elias, making him think his plan was executed.
It was a shot in the dark, risking everything on a half-baked theory, but it meant not making the choice Elias wanted.
“I won’t play your game, Elias,” Xander snarled, his eyes fixed on the device, his plan forming. “You don’t get to dictate my love.”
He started feverishly connecting wires, his hands moving with practiced speed born of desperation. This would only delay the inevitable for Aria, or perhaps even trigger something worse, but it was a fight, not a surrender.
“Thirty seconds, Xander. Make your choice. Or both die.” Elias’s voice was triumphant, believing he had won.
Aria watched the numbers blur. 00:00:05. Five seconds. She closed her eyes, picturing Xander, picturing Leo. A single tear cut a clean path through the soot on her cheek.
00:00:04.
00:00:03.
00:00:02.
Xander jammed the final wire into place. He slammed his palm onto the small, flickering screen of his device. A faint whirring sound emanated from it.
00:00:01.
Aria opened her eyes, staring into the heart of the inferno, the flames now engulfing the pedestal, crawling towards the bomb. She braced herself.
00:00:00.
The canvas of their future, fragmented and uncertain, hung in the balance.
A deafening roar ripped through the air.
