No!
Screaming, Clara’s legs moved before her mind registered. Rhys. His body crumpled, a sickening thud echoing through the warehouse. Finch stood, a smoking pistol still aimed, eyes wide with a manic glee that sent a chill down her spine.
Police sirens wailed, closer now, a cacophony piercing the night. Flashing blue and red lights painted the grimy walls, a grotesque disco of impending justice. Officers burst through the main entrance, weapons raised, shouts filling the space.
Finch’s head snapped towards the new threat. He hesitated, a moment of pure animalistic fear flickering in his eyes before he dropped the weapon. Hands shot into the air, surrendering to the overwhelming force.
Stumbling, Clara reached Rhys. She fell to her knees beside him, her hands trembling as they hovered over his chest. A dark stain bloomed rapidly across his shirt, stark against the white fabric.
"Rhys? Speak to me!"
His eyes were half-lidded, unfocused. A guttural groan escaped his lips. His breathing was shallow, ragged. Blood. So much blood.
"Stay with me, Rhys. Please." Tears blurred her vision, hot and stinging. Her fingers pressed against the wound, a futile attempt to stem the flow. Warm, sticky. The metallic tang filled her nostrils.
Paramedics swarmed in, their urgency a stark contrast to her frozen terror. They pushed her gently aside, their trained hands already working, cutting away his clothes. Oxygen mask, IV lines. A flurry of controlled chaos.
"He's lost a lot of blood," a gruff voice stated, confirming her worst fears. "Bullet went clean through, but it's close to the lung."
Clara watched, helpless, as they stabilized him. Her heart hammered against her ribs, a frantic drumbeat of fear and desperate hope. He had to be okay. He had to.
Then, she remembered the drive.
Scanning the floor, her eyes landed on the small, silver rectangle. It lay just inches from where Rhys had fallen, testament to his final, defiant act. Picking it up, her fingers brushed against the cool metal. Intact. Secure.
This was for him. For everything they'd risked.
Officers questioned her, their voices distant, muffled. She answered in monosyllables, her gaze constantly drawn back to Rhys, who was now being carefully loaded onto a stretcher. His face was ashen, his lips tinged blue.
Adrian was gone. Vanished into the chaos, or perhaps apprehended elsewhere in the building. Finch was cuffed, led away, his crazed smile replaced by a sullen grimace. Justice. A bitter, incomplete taste.
Following the stretcher, Clara rode in the ambulance, clutching Rhys’s cold hand. The siren wailed, a mournful cry echoing through the city streets. Every bump, every turn, sent a jolt of terror through her.
At the hospital, they whisked him away, behind swinging doors marked 'Restricted Access'. Clara was left in a sterile waiting room, the harsh fluorescent lights doing nothing to calm her frayed nerves. Hours stretched into an eternity.
Finally, a doctor emerged, his face grave. "He's stable for now. Critical condition. The bullet missed his heart, but it nicked a major artery and caused significant lung damage. He's in surgery."
Relief, a fragile thing, warred with crushing anxiety. He was alive. He was fighting. She sank into a plastic chair, her body heavy with exhaustion, her mind numb.
Hours bled into dawn. News reports flickered on a silent TV in the corner, mentioning a dramatic police raid on a known criminal enterprise. No names, yet. But she knew. Finch was finally caught. The data drive, once analyzed, would bring down Adrian and his network.
A small victory. A costly one.
Her phone vibrated in her pocket, a jarring interruption to the oppressive silence. She pulled it out, her fingers stiff. It was a notification from her financial institution.
A transaction alert. Unusual activity.
Frowning, Clara clicked open the banking app. Her eyes scanned the summary, then widened in disbelief. A massive withdrawal. No, not a withdrawal. A seizure.
All funds associated with Thorne Gallery. Frozen. Then, a further notification. An official legal document, attached as a PDF.
Her hands shook as she opened it. The words blurred, then focused. A hostile takeover. A legal injunction. Not from Adrian, not directly. This was from 'Olympus Group'. A corporate entity she’d never heard of.
They claimed proprietary rights, citing obscure clauses in a dormant loan agreement, somehow reactivated and leveraged. A predatory move, swift and brutal.
No. It couldn't be. The gallery was saved. Rhys had saved it. He’d cleared the debt.
Frantically, she tried calling the gallery. No answer. She tried her father’s mobile. Straight to voicemail. Panic, cold and sharp, began to claw its way up her throat.
She scrolled further through the document, searching for a familiar name, a thread connecting it to Finch or Adrian. Nothing. Olympus Group. A new player. A faceless, corporate predator.
Clara felt the blood drain from her face. This wasn’t just a simple setback. This was a complete loss. The gallery, her family’s legacy, was gone. Even if the debt was technically cleared, this 'Olympus Group' had found a loophole, a legal avenue to seize it.
Adrian’s final, insidious move? Or someone else entirely, waiting in the wings? A deeper conspiracy she hadn't even imagined.
Looking at Rhys’s pale, unconscious face through the small window of the ICU door, a wave of despair washed over her. He had sacrificed so much. His body, his freedom, his future. And for what?
The gallery was gone. The very thing he’d fought to protect, the future they’d started to build together, was ashes.
She sat back down, head in her hands, the sterile hospital air suddenly suffocating. Her phone vibrated again.
It was a generic message from her carrier. Then, a second later, a notification. 'Thorne Gallery - Permanently Closed'. The words burned into her vision, a death knell.
Then, a new message. From an unknown number.
Her breath hitched. She unlocked her phone, her thumb shaking.
'This is far from over, Crimson.'
The message hung in the air, cold and menacing. A direct threat. A promise of continued torment. This wasn't Adrian. This was someone new, someone who knew her, someone who had watched, and waited.
Clara clutched the unconscious Rhys’s hand through the glass, her world collapsing around her. The battle was won, but the war, she realized with sickening clarity, had only just begun. The cost, she feared, might be everything. And this unknown enemy, this 'Crimson' whisperer, was still out there.
