Chapter 42 of 50
Chapter 42: Rhys's Full Confession
907 words
Staring at her, Rhys felt a cold wave crash over him. Crimson. The name echoed, a phantom whisper from countless encrypted reports he’d intercepted, a ghost in the machine of the underworld. Clara was Crimson.
His jaw clenched, muscles working furiously. Years of careful, dangerous work, all the while she operated under his nose, a phantom he’d been trying to pin down.
A strange mix of frustration and profound, terrifying understanding flooded him. The pieces clicked into place, forming a picture far more intricate and dangerous than he’d ever imagined.
Moments stretched into an agonizing silence, thick with unspoken truths. Her words, raw and defiant, still hung in the air between them, challenging his every preconceived notion.
Finally, Rhys took a ragged breath. He ran a hand over his face, scrubbing away the weariness that suddenly weighed him down.
Voice rough, he spoke, "You were investigating my family. You had information that could shatter everything."
Clara’s gaze didn't waver. "I was investigating a network of corruption, Rhys. Your family's name kept appearing in the periphery, then closer, then at the very heart of it."
He nodded slowly, a dark truth dawning. "And my blackmail… my marriage proposal… it was just another flag for you, wasn't it? Another thread to pull?"
Her silence was his answer.
Moving closer, Rhys stopped mere inches from her, his eyes searching hers for any flicker of doubt, any sign she wasn't truly the hardened operative she claimed.
He found none. Only fierce intelligence and a resolve that matched his own.
"What if I told you," he began, his voice dropping to a low, intense murmur, "that my reasons for that blackmail were far more complicated than simple control?"
She watched him, wary but intrigued. "I'm listening."
For years, Rhys had been fighting a silent war. A war against the very 'network of corruption' Clara spoke of. A shadow organization, deeply embedded, reaching into every corner of society, including his own family's legacy.
He knew their methods. He understood their reach. They didn't just silence people; they erased them, their families, their entire histories.
Protection was his primary goal. Not just for himself, but for those innocents who might inadvertently stumble into their path.
This network was ruthless, relentless. They dealt in secrets, in power, in lives.
They operated with impunity, masked by layers of legitimate enterprise and political influence.
Discovering your activity, Clara, your investigations into their core operations… it sent a chill down my spine," Rhys confessed, his voice laced with a genuine fear he rarely showed.
He had seen the reports. He had intercepted their communications, their threats. They were closing in on Crimson, whoever she was.
My intent, from the moment I realized you were getting too close, was to bring you into my sphere, to place you where I could protect you," he explained, the confession tasting bitter on his tongue.
Every move, every calculated insult, every harsh word he'd uttered, had been a shield. A clumsy, cruel shield, but a shield nonetheless.
It was never about silencing you from afar. It was about controlling the narrative around you, making you appear as a valuable asset to me, rather than a rogue threat to them.
Trusting no one, especially not those in my own circle, I had to create a fortress around you. A public, undeniable bond that would make you untouchable, at least initially.
The choice was stark: let you continue your dangerous dance, exposed and vulnerable, or force you into my orbit, under my supposed 'control,' where I could monitor and intercept any threats against you.
A cruel irony, he now realized. He had blackmailed her into a marriage to save her, only for her to believe he was just another cog in the machine she fought against.
Now, seeing the fire in her eyes, hearing her own dangerous confession, he understood the depth of her courage. And the magnitude of his own terrible gamble.
What I did, Clara, was for your safety. And the safety of your family, if they were ever implicated by your proximity to this information.
He swallowed hard, the weight of his decision pressing down on him. The sacrifices he’d made, the lines he’d blurred, all for a single, desperate purpose.
His voice laced with regret, Rhys admits, "I married you not just to control the information, Clara, but to keep you safe from a viper's nest I couldn't allow you to wander into alone."
