Chapter 36: Under Fire, Side by Side

857 words

Screeching tires ripped through the late afternoon quiet. Rhys's hand clamped instantly on Clara's arm, yanking her back as a black van barreled onto the sidewalk, spitting gravel. They had just stepped out of the Thorne gallery, the venom of Weston's smear campaign still stinging. Adrenaline surged, cold and sharp. Rhys shoved her hard behind a massive stone planter. A staccato burst of gunfire erupted, bullets chipping stone where her head had been moments before. Clara gasped, dropping to a crouch. Her heart hammered against her ribs, a frantic bird trapped in a cage. "Stay down!" Rhys's voice was a low growl, tight with urgency. He peered around the edge of the planter, his body tense, ready to spring. Ahead, two figures emerged from the van, masked and armed. They moved with practiced efficiency, their guns tracking for targets. Glass shattered from the gallery's display window behind them. A loud *thump* signaled more shots hitting the building. Clara’s mind, despite the terror, snapped into focus. She scanned their surroundings, looking for an exit, any kind of cover. "Back alley!" she yelled, pointing with a trembling hand towards a narrow gap between the gallery and the adjacent antique shop. It was their only hope. Rhys nodded, a silent command passing between them. He didn't question her, didn't hesitate. Pushing off the planter, he moved with breathtaking speed, a blur of controlled power. He drew his own concealed weapon, a glint of metal in his grip. He fired two quick shots, not aiming to kill, but to suppress. The masked figures ducked, momentarily breaking their assault. Clara didn’t wait. She scrambled low, keeping the planter between herself and the attackers, using the precious seconds Rhys had bought her. Her legs burned as she sprinted towards the alley. Rhys covered her, a human shield, moving backwards, his eyes never leaving their assailants. He fired again, forcing them to stay low. They reached the alley entrance. It was dark, smelling of damp concrete and forgotten trash. She squeezed through the narrow opening first. He followed, his broad shoulders barely fitting, the rough brick scraping against his expensive suit. Another volley of shots peppered the brickwork around them. The sound was deafening, echoing in the confined space. "This way!" Clara whispered, her voice hoarse. She knew these back alleys, had explored them as a child, finding shortcuts through the labyrinthine city block. Her instincts kicked in. She spotted a loose grimy grate covering a storm drain, a heavy metal lid beside a dumpster. "The grate!" she hissed, pointing. "We can drop into the service tunnels. It’s a network under here." Rhys glanced at it, his expression grim but assessing. "Too small for them to follow quickly," he stated, acknowledging the strategy. He moved to the grate, prying it open with surprising ease, his muscles straining. It clanged loudly against the brick wall. Bullets zipped past, one tearing a hole in the sleeve of his jacket. He barely flinched. "Go!" he ordered, pushing her towards the dark opening. "Now!" She hesitated for a split second, looking at him. He was wounded, yet his focus remained entirely on her safety. Then, she dropped into the darkness, landing softly on a mound of damp earth at the bottom of the short shaft. Rhys quickly followed, dropping in after her, pulling the heavy grate back over the opening with a grunt. The clang reverberated, then silence, save for their ragged breathing. They were plunged into near total darkness. A faint sliver of light filtered through a crack above, barely illuminating the damp concrete tunnel. "Stay close," Rhys muttered, his hand finding hers in the gloom. His grip was firm, anchoring her. Their pursuers were above them, stomping around, voices muffled and angry. They knew they had been outmaneuvered. Clara focused on the path ahead, her memory guiding her through the twisting, claustrophobic passage. She could feel the vibration of their footsteps above, hear their frustrated shouts. "Left here, then right at the next junction," she instructed, pulling him along. The air was thick with the smell of mildew and stagnant water. He moved with a hunter's grace, despite the cramped space. His presence was a solid, reassuring anchor in the suffocating dark. They heard a muffled explosion from above, followed by more shouting. "They're trying to breach the tunnels!" Rhys growled. Speed was critical. They navigated a series of tight turns, the cold, damp walls pressing in on them. Suddenly, the end of the tunnel opened into a wider, brightly lit maintenance area. A service door, half-ajar, led to the outside. Just as they reached it, a burst of gunfire tore through the metal door. Splinters flew. Rhys reacted instantly, shoving Clara behind a sturdy electrical panel. He threw himself in front of her, his large frame completely shielding her as bullets pinged off the metal wall, a brutal percussion around them. His body was a solid, unyielding barrier, a primal instinct overriding all pretense of their arranged marriage.
