Chapter 47: Elara's Fierce Protection

907 words

Screams ripped through the sterile air, followed by the blare of an alarm. Elara’s heart hammered against her ribs, a frantic drumbeat echoing the urgency. Her gaze snapped to Liam, still connected to the IV drip, his small face pale and vulnerable in the hospital bed. “Bomb threat!” A nurse’s voice, shrill with panic, sliced through the growing chaos. Elara didn’t hesitate. Maternal instinct surged, overriding every other thought. This wasn't just a hospital; it was a target. The kingpin’s reach was long, insidious. Grabbing Liam’s small hand, she pulled the IV stand closer. His eyes fluttered open, wide with fear. “Mommy?” he whispered, his voice thin. “It’s okay, sweetheart,” she soothed, her voice firmer than she felt. “We’re just going for a little walk.” Around them, order dissolved into pandemonium. Staff scrambled, shouting instructions that no one seemed to hear. Patients, many in wheelchairs or hooked to portable machines, were being herded towards exits. She scanned the room, assessing. A critical care ward. Many patients couldn’t move quickly. This was a bottleneck waiting to happen. Pulling at the IV line, Elara carefully disconnected it. Liam winced, a tiny whimper escaping his lips. Her hands worked with practiced speed, a testament to months spent at his bedside. She knew the equipment, the basic protocols. “Hold my hand tight,” she instructed, helping Liam sit up. He was weak, but his grip was surprisingly strong. Navigating the surge of bodies, Elara pushed against the tide. She ignored the frantic calls to stay calm, to follow the designated path. Instinct told her the main exits would be chaos, easy pickings for any lingering threat. Instead, she veered sharply, spotting a service corridor marked ‘Authorized Personnel Only’. Her mind raced, remembering the blueprints Julian had once shown her of a facility with similar security infrastructure. There had to be a less obvious route. Pushing the heavy door open, she found herself in a dimly lit hallway, smelling faintly of disinfectant and stale coffee. This was quieter, but not deserted. Two orderlies, struggling with a gurney, stared at her. “Ma’am, you can’t be here. Evacuation is that way.” One pointed back towards the main ward. “My son is critically ill,” Elara stated, her voice sharp with authority she didn't know she possessed. “He needs immediate, unhindered egress. I know a more direct path to the auxiliary helipad. Are you going to help, or are you going to stand there and watch a child suffer?” Her words cut through their indecision. One orderly, a younger man with kind eyes, nodded. “The helipad exit is three floors up, through the supply lift.” “Show me,” Elara commanded, already moving. The young orderly quickly joined her, pushing Liam’s IV stand while Elara kept a protective arm around her son. Ascending in the clunky service lift, the sounds of the main evacuation grew distant. Elara held Liam close, feeling his small shivers against her side. She whispered reassurances, recalling Julian’s steadfast resolve, his unwavering belief in her strength. He had always seen this fire in her, even when she hadn’t. Reaching the helipad, the night air hit them, cool and sharp. A lone security guard, looking bewildered, was already there. He gaped at Elara and Liam. “We need a vehicle, now,” Elara stated, pulling out her burner phone. She had one number programmed, a contact Julian had given her for emergencies. “A secure transport, immediately. This location is compromised.” The guard, seeing the urgency in her eyes, nodded, fumbling for his radio. Within minutes, a black unmarked van screeched to a halt on the helipad. The driver, a burly man with watchful eyes, leaped out. “Mrs. Thorne?” he grunted, confirming her identity with a quick glance at a photo on his phone. “Mr. Thorne anticipated… a situation.” Julian. Even in his absence, he was orchestrating her protection. A wave of fierce love and gratitude washed over her, hardening her resolve even further. Helping Liam into the back, Elara strapped him in, her hands steady. The driver helped stow the IV stand. She knew they weren’t truly safe, not yet, but this was a reprieve. The van sped away from the hospital, leaving the flashing lights and distant sirens behind. Elara pulled out her phone again, checking the news. Updates flashed: the bomb threat was a hoax, but the disruption was complete. A diversion. They had fallen for it. The kingpin had merely wanted them out, exposed. She looked around the back of the van. Liam had drifted off, exhausted but safe. Then, her eyes landed on a small, discreetly placed envelope taped to the underside of the seat in front of her. It wasn’t hospital issue. It wasn't from the driver. Her name, 'Elara', was written in stark, precise lettering. A shiver ran down her spine. No return address, no sender. Just her name. Opening it, her fingers trembled slightly. Inside was a single, stark white card. On it, printed in the same unnervingly precise font, was a message, chilling and direct: 'Your husband left something for you. A final secret.'
