Alaric Thorne.
The name echoed, a phantom limb that had been severed from the family tree decades ago. Julian stared, his mind refusing the image before him. This gaunt, hate-filled man couldn't be the great-uncle, the war hero, the one whose portrait hung in the Montgomery study, forever young and smiling.
"Impossible," Julian rasped, his voice rough. "You're dead."
Alaric's laugh, a dry, brittle sound, scraped across the cavernous room. "Dead? Oh, no. Merely... waiting. Building. Watching."
Marcus moved, a blur of protective instinct. "Kingpin, you're under arrest!"
"Arrest?" Alaric sneered, his eyes, dark and knowing, fixed solely on Julian. "You still cling to such quaint notions of justice? After everything?"
Elara clutched Julian's arm, her fingers digging in. "Julian, don't engage. He's trying to provoke you."
Burning fury flared in Julian's chest. This man, this ghost, had orchestrated Noah's pain, Thorne's terror, the very foundations of chaos in the city. He had toyed with their lives.
"Why?" Julian demanded, stepping forward, shedding Elara's grip. "Why all of this? Decades of scheming, of manipulation? For what?"
Alaric's lips twisted. "For what? For everything! For what was stolen from me, from my legacy. From the true Montgomery power."
He spread his arms, gesturing to the dilapidated, grand room around them. "This estate, Julian, was my birthright. My vision. Your father... he saw to it that I lost it all. That I lost my standing. That I became a forgotten name."
Julian shook his head, a muscle twitching in his jaw. "My father built Montgomery Industries. He brought it to prominence!"
"Prominence built on my ruin!" Alaric roared, his voice cracking with venom. His eyes, now wide and manic, glowed with a terrifying obsession. "He stole my patents, my designs, my very future. He left me for dead, and then he *dared* to thrive."
"That's a lie!" Julian lunged, years of suppressed rage exploding. He didn't think, only acted, driven by an instinct to defend his father's name, to avenge Noah, to tear down the architect of their misery.
Marcus shouted a warning, but it was too late. Julian closed the distance, his fist connecting with Alaric's jaw in a sickening thud.
The older man stumbled, a thin stream of blood appearing at the corner of his mouth. But he didn't fall. Instead, a predatory grin spread across his face.
"Good. The Montgomery temper," Alaric rasped, wiping the blood with a slow, deliberate motion. "Just like your father."
He moved with surprising speed, a hidden blade flashing in his hand. Julian barely dodged, the cold steel whistling past his ear.
Marcus tackled a hulking henchman who had appeared from the shadows, a chaotic symphony of grunts and impacts erupting behind Julian.
Elara screamed, pulling a small pistol from her coat. She aimed, but another figure, faster, knocked it from her grasp. A fierce struggle began near the crumbling fireplace.
Julian focused on Alaric. The Kingpin wasn't a brawler. He was precise, his movements economical, fueled by a lifetime of simmering hatred. His blade danced, forcing Julian to weave and duck, relying on raw instinct.
"You think you know your family, boy?" Alaric taunted, thrusting the knife low. "You think you understand the depths of their depravity?"
Julian parried with a heavy iron candelabra he'd snatched from a nearby table. Metal shrieked against metal.
His breath hitched, his muscles burning. Alaric was older, but his malice lent him an unnatural strength, a honed viciousness.
Alaric circled, his eyes never leaving Julian's. "Your father wasn't merely ambitious. He was ruthless. A monster in a suit."
Julian swung the candelabra, forcing Alaric back. "You're projecting your own failures!"
"Failures?" Alaric laughed, a chilling sound. He spun, slashing. The blade caught Julian's arm, a searing pain blooming across his bicep. Warm blood seeped into his sleeve.
Julian roared, dropping the candelabra and grabbing Alaric's wrist, twisting. The Kingpin hissed but held fast to the knife.
They grappled, a violent embrace of blood enemies. Julian pushed Alaric against a decaying wall, the plaster crumbling around them.
Alaric's face, inches from Julian's, was a mask of triumph. "You're strong, yes. But you lack true understanding. You lack the knowledge of who you really are."
Julian's grip tightened, his knuckles white. "What are you talking about?"
"You think you're Julian Montgomery, the rightful heir?" Alaric's voice dropped to a sinister whisper, his eyes glinting with a horrifying secret. "You think your father was the great man you idolize?"
He broke Julian's hold with a sudden surge of power, slamming his knee into Julian's gut. Julian gasped, doubling over, pain lancing through him.
Alaric pressed the tip of his blade against Julian's throat, a cold, sharp promise of death. Julian could feel the tremor of the steel against his skin.
"Your father, Julian," Alaric breathed, his voice dripping with triumphant malice, "he wasn't your biological father at all. You were merely a convenient acquisition. A child, stolen from another family, adopted and molded to be his perfect, obedient heir."
Julian froze, his blood running cold. The world tilted. His father, his identity, everything he thought he knew, shattered into a million impossible pieces. The blade at his throat felt less threatening than the icy grip of Alaric's words.
"The Montgomery blood that flows in your veins, Julian?" Alaric whispered, his eyes gleaming. "It's not yours."
