Chapter 30: Julian's Unyielding Shield

1.1k words

Screaming, Elara lunged forward. A masked figure, cloaked in black, stood frozen beside Leo's bed. The IV pole clattered as the intruder stumbled back, startled by her sudden cry. Julian, already half out of his chair, reacted instantly. He covered the room in two powerful strides. "Get away from him!" he roared, his voice a low, dangerous rumble. The intruder hesitated, then spun. A swift, practiced movement. Darting towards the door, the figure melted into the hospital corridor. Julian was right behind them, phone already to his ear. "Lock down the floor! Now!" he barked, his voice cutting through the sudden chaos. Alarms blared within seconds. Footsteps pounded. Julian didn't wait, pushing past a bewildered nurse. Elara collapsed beside Leo's bed, heart hammering. She checked her son, her hands trembling. He stirred. "Mommy?" "I'm here, baby," she whispered, pulling him close. Relief, sharp and painful, washed over her. Julian returned, his face a mask of cold fury. His eyes, usually cool grey, burned with infernal fire. His jaw was so tight, the muscle twitched. "They're gone," he stated, voice laced with terrifying undertones. "Escaped through the emergency stairwell." "Who was it?" Elara asked, voice hoarse. "What did they want?" His gaze swept over Leo, then settled on her. "I don't know, Elara. But I will find out." Stepping back, Julian dialled again. His posture was rigid, every line of his body screaming controlled violence. "Marcus," he snapped. "Initiate full-scale security protocol. Every inch of this hospital locked down. Every camera feed reviewed. Every staff member accounted for." He paused, listening. "Someone just tried to get to my son. I want a perimeter established around this entire facility. No one in, no one out, without my direct approval." Marcus, his head of security, was already on it. "Find every possible ingress point. I want a list of everyone who entered this floor. Cross-reference with staff schedules. Check visitors' logs. I want names, faces, everything." Finishing the call, Julian turned to Elara. His hand gently cupped her cheek, thumb brushing away a tear. "Are you alright?" he asked, voice softer, though his eyes remained intense. "I... I think so," she stammered, leaning into his touch. "Leo... he's okay." Watching her, Julian felt a primal roar building. Her vulnerability, her fear for her child, ignited something fierce within him. He had always been calculating, rational. This untamed emotion was new. Terrifying. Absolute. "No one," he muttered, more to himself. "No one touches him." Minutes later, Marcus arrived with a team. They moved with quiet efficiency, examining the room. Detective Miller, Julian's private investigator, was en route. Julian trusted only his own. "Sir, the intruder wore a hospital-issue uniform," Marcus reported. "Dark scrubs, surgical mask, cap. Very professional. Left no trace." "Access cards?" Julian demanded. "No record of a card used on this door. They likely slipped in or used an old key card." Marcus shook his head. "Or, they had help." Julian's eyes narrowed. "Someone inside." This wasn't a random act. This was targeted. Professional. Caldwell. It had to be him. The veiled threats, the sudden escalation. "Pull all security footage from the entire hospital, Marcus. Every camera, every angle, starting from an hour before Elara arrived. I want to see how they got in, how they moved, who they interacted with." "Already on it, sir. We're checking laundry for tampered or stolen uniforms." Elara watched Julian, dread tightening her stomach. This wasn't the detached businessman. This was a man unleashed, driven by ancient instinct. His focus was absolute, his commands precise. He moved like a general, orchestrating forces with ruthless efficiency. "Julian," she whispered. "He knew where we were. He knew about Leo." He turned, gaze softening slightly. "I know. We'll figure out how. Then we'll make them pay." He sat beside her, arm wrapping around her shoulder. His presence was a solid shield against her fear. "This is my fault," she whispered, burying her face in his chest. "If I hadn't pushed..." "Stop," he commanded, firm but gentle. He tilted her chin up. "This isn't your fault. This is the consequence of dealing with evil men. I would protect you and Leo regardless." His eyes held hers, a silent promise of unyielding protection. Miller arrived, grim-faced. He listened to Julian's terse summary. "We have a severe breach, Julian," Miller concluded. "Whoever this is, they're well-connected and resourceful." "Caldwell," Julian stated, flatly. "It has to be." Miller nodded. "Timing is suspicious, sir. Right after your encounter. Fits his MO for intimidation. But this... this is a step too far." "It's an act of war," Julian corrected, dangerously quiet. "And I don't lose wars." He rose, movements precise. His mind whirled with strategies, legal loopholes, retaliatory strikes. "I want our legal team to prepare an injunction against Senator Caldwell. A restraining order, anything to limit his access and influence. Start digging into his finances, his associates. Every dirty secret." Miller scribbled furiously. "Hit him where it hurts." "I want to dismantle him," Julian replied, eyes cold. "And I want every member of my security team assigned to Elara and Leo around the clock. No exceptions. Not a moment alone. Not even for a second." He walked to the window, staring out. The rage simmered, a steady, controlled burn. This wasn't just business. Not revenge for Thorne Group. This was personal. This was family. He pictured the masked figure over Leo's innocent form. The image seared into his mind, fueling his resolve. Never again. His fists clenched. He would build an impenetrable fortress. He would use every resource, every connection, every ounce of his power. No one would ever threaten them again. Turning back, his posture was unyielding, expression resolute. His voice, low and resonant, carried absolute conviction. "No one touches what's mine. Especially not my family."
