Chapter 33 of 50
Trust on the Brink
641 words
Sinking onto the sofa in Elias's private study, Anya felt a chill despite the warmth of the room.
"He has moles," she stated, her voice tight. "Inside Thorne Industries. That's what Professor Finch confirmed. Vance has eyes everywhere."
Elias, who had been pacing, froze mid-step. His back was to her. The air in the room thickened, suddenly heavy with unspoken disbelief and a creeping dread.
Turning slowly, his eyes, usually so sharp and analytical, held a flicker of something unreadable. "Moles?" he repeated, his tone flat, devoid of emotion.
"That's what Alaric said. He's certain. Vance's reach isn't just in the art world. It's political, criminal. And it's right here, in your organization."
Silence stretched between them, thick and suffocating. Anya watched him, sensing the raw, visceral blow this information delivered.
His jaw tightened, a muscle twitching near his temple. Elias prided himself on his control, his impenetrable defenses. This news was a direct assault on his judgment, his carefully constructed empire.
"Who?" he finally demanded, his voice a low growl. "Did Finch give you names? Any indication?"
Anya shook her head. "No. He only knows they exist. That Vance has cultivated them over time. He said Vance is a master manipulator, always thinking ten steps ahead."
Clenching his fists, Elias walked to the large window, staring out at the city lights. His posture was rigid, every line of his body screaming betrayal.
"My people," he muttered, almost to himself. "My most trusted advisors. My inner circle."
Feeling a pang of sympathy, Anya knew this wasn't just about business. This was personal. Elias had built Thorne Industries from the ground up, forging loyalty with an intensity few could match.
Suddenly, he turned back, his gaze piercing. "This changes everything. We can't trust anyone. Our communications, our plans… they could all be compromised."
"Alaric warned me of the danger," Anya admitted. "He said Vance is ruthless. He wouldn't hesitate to use any leverage, any information."
Running a hand through his dark hair, Elias paced again, a restless predator trapped. "How long? How long have they been feeding him information? What have they told him?"
Imagining the implications, Anya felt a knot form in her stomach. Every email, every whispered conversation, every document in the secure servers could have found its way to Vance.
His eyes narrowed, focused inward as he processed the seismic shift in their situation. Trust was the bedrock of his operations, and now that foundation was crumbling beneath him.
Observing his cold, logical processing, Anya also saw the flicker of something else—a vulnerability he rarely allowed to show. This attack wasn't just on his company; it was on his very sense of security.
Eventually, Elias stopped, his gaze settling on Anya. A different light entered his eyes, a calculated intensity that made her hold her breath.
"We need to find them," he stated, his voice devoid of any warmth. "Every single one. And we need to do it without anyone knowing we're looking."
Swallowing hard, Anya nodded. The task felt monumental, impossible.
"I need someone I can absolutely trust," he continued, stepping closer. "Someone outside the usual chain of command. Someone with an eye for detail, for hidden meanings."
Her heart began to pound. She knew where this was going.
Leaning against his desk, Elias crossed his arms. "I need you, Anya, to vet my most trusted employees. My core team. Everyone who has access to sensitive information regarding the Vance investigation and beyond."
Anya's breath hitched. "Me? Elias, I'm an art expert, not an investigator. And many of these people... they've worked with you for years. Decades, even. They're your closest allies."
"Precisely," he said, his voice firm, unwavering. "Their loyalty, their history, that's what makes them dangerous if compromised. And your fresh perspective, your ability to see patterns, to notice things others miss... that's our best chance."
