Chapter 28: Kaelen's Confession
941 words
Grasping for her hand, Kaelen felt her pull away. A chasm opened between them, wider than any physical distance. Her eyes, once a comforting haven, now held a guarded pain he couldn't penetrate.
"Elara, you have to understand," he pleaded, his voice raw. He stepped closer, desperate to bridge the gap.
She took another step back, her gaze fixed on something beyond him, a distant memory perhaps.
"Understand what, Kaelen?" Her voice was a fragile whisper. "That you just… walked away?" Her knuckles were white, gripping the edge of the antique console.
Pain lanced through him. He couldn't blame her. For years, that was the only truth she knew.
"No, not like that," he insisted, shaking his head vehemently. "Sterling. It was Sterling. He had me trapped. He's a monster, Elara, a manipulator." His words tumbled out, urgent, uncontrolled.
Crossing her arms, she watched him, her expression a careful blend of skepticism and weary hope. She wanted to believe him, he could see it, but the hurt ran too deep.
"He stole my concept. He took my ideas, my sketches, and claimed them as his own for 'The Labyrinth'. But that wasn't the worst of it. Not even close."
Remembering the past, a chill snaked down his spine. The pressure had been relentless, a slow, insidious tightening of the noose.
It started subtly. After Kaelen secured the scholarship, Sterling began his 'mentorship.' Praising his talent, flattering his ambition, then subtly planting seeds of doubt about the art world's cutthroat nature.
Then came the 'opportunities.' Invitations to exclusive gallery events, introductions to influential figures. All while pushing Kaelen to share more of his conceptual work, ostensibly for 'feedback.'
Soon, Sterling started hinting at connections he had, the power he wielded. He spoke of rising stars, and of those who 'fell from grace' just as quickly.
"He found out about my family, Elara. My mother's medical bills, my sister's tuition. He knew exactly what vulnerabilities to exploit." Kaelen’s voice dropped, laced with shame and fury.
His family had always been his anchor, his greatest motivation. Sterling twisted that into a weapon.
"He started with veiled threats. Casual remarks about how a young artist's reputation could be 'tarnished' if they crossed the wrong person. How funding for a scholarship could mysteriously 'disappear.'"
Running a hand through his hair, Kaelen paced a tight circle. He could still feel the knot in his stomach from back then, the constant dread.
"When I confronted him about my stolen concept, he didn't even deny it. He just smiled. A cold, predatory smile. He said he owned me. My future, my career, my very existence as an artist."
Sterling's control had been absolute. The professor had resources, influence, and no moral compass.
"He showed me documents. Fabricated accusations of plagiarism against my family's small business, claiming intellectual property theft from a rival company. He had falsified tax records, making it look like my mother was embezzling funds from the foundation that helped her with medical costs."
Each revelation felt like a punch to the gut. Kaelen could see Elara's initial skepticism slowly crumble, replaced by a horrified understanding.
Her face had gone pale, her hands now clasped over her mouth.
"He said if I didn't 'cooperate,' if I ever exposed him, he would unleash everything. He'd ruin my family. Destroy their lives, financially and reputationally. They’d lose everything, Elara. Everything."
Kaelen stopped pacing, facing her directly. His eyes pleaded for her to see the impossible corner he was backed into.
"And then… he brought you into it." His voice wavered, cracking under the weight of the memory.
Elara flinched, her eyes wide. A gasp escaped her lips.
"He knew about us. He knew how much I loved you, how much your art meant to you. He saw you as another lever to pull, another way to ensure my silence and obedience."
Hot tears pricked Kaelen’s eyes, blurring her image. He remembered Sterling's chilling words, delivered with a casual cruelty that still haunted his nightmares.
"He threatened to expose fabricated scandals about you. To plant stories in the press about your integrity, your early work being unoriginal. He said he'd make sure no gallery, no collector, no institution would ever touch your art again. He would ensure your career died before it even truly began."
His chest heaved with ragged breaths. The memory of that agonizing choice was as vivid now as it had been then. His knuckles were bone-white as he clenched his fists, fighting the urge to shatter something.
"He told me I had two choices: walk away from you, from art, and disappear. Or watch him systematically dismantle everything I held dear, starting with my family, then moving on to you."
Dropping his gaze, Kaelen felt tears finally spill down his cheeks. His voice broke, barely a whisper.
"He threatened to ruin my family, Elara. He threatened *your* career. Leaving you was the only way I knew to protect you."
