Chapter 46: The Pre-emptive Strike
723 words
Screeching alarms ripped through the bunker's sterile air. A piercing, metallic wail that vibrated through Elara's teeth.
Cassian's head snapped up.
His eyes, sharp and alert, scanned the console.
Red lights pulsed across the main screen, a frantic warning.
'They found us,' he rasped, pulling Elara behind him.
He didn't need to say more. Isabelle Vance's curt warning echoed in Elara's mind.
This wasn't just a threat. It was a declaration.
Boom! A distant explosion rocked the bunker, rattling the heavy steel door to their section.
Dust sifted from the ceiling seams.
Cassian drew his weapon, a suppressed pistol appearing in his hand as if by magic.
He pushed Elara further back, shielding her.
'Stay low,' he commanded, his voice tight with urgency.
Footsteps thudded, growing louder, closer. They weren't hesitant.
These weren't Lyra's panicked, disorganized goons from the last assault.
This was a professional breach.
Metal shrieked as a cutting torch began to chew through the outer door of their section.
Sparks flew, hissing against the reinforced alloy.
Cassian’s jaw tightened. 'They're not just trying to stop us. They want to bury everything.'
Elara understood. The encrypted data was out, but the physical archives, the untouched historical records, still remained.
That was their ultimate target.
With a powerful kick, Cassian dislodged a heavy filing cabinet, sending it crashing against the door just as a section of metal gave way.
It bought them seconds.
'We need to get to the main archive hall,' Elara declared, grabbing a portable drive she'd been charging.
There might be a chance to salvage more, to digitally copy the irreplaceable.
Cassian hesitated, but her fierce determination mirrored his own.
'Fine. But we move fast. Stay on my six.'
He led the way, navigating the winding corridors of the forgotten bunker.
Another explosion. Closer this time.
The bunker trembled violently, lights flickering.
Debris rained down from above. A section of ceiling plaster detached, narrowly missing Elara's head.
'They're breaching from multiple points!' Cassian shouted over the din.
Gunfire erupted ahead, sharp, staccato cracks echoing through the concrete labyrinth.
He peeked around a corner, then pulled back sharply as bullets ricocheted off the wall.
'Two, possibly three hostiles. Heavily armed.'
Cassian laid down suppressing fire, forcing the attackers to retreat momentarily.
They sprinted through the gap, Elara feeling the wind of bullets as they tore past the corner.
Her heart hammered against her ribs, a frantic drumbeat.
They reached a junction. Smoke billowed from the right, thick and acrid.
From the left, the distinct hum of industrial machinery.
'Main archive is this way,' Elara pointed, pulling at Cassian's sleeve.
He nodded, pushing her forward.
The sound of heavy boots grew closer, directly behind them.
They were being herded, pushed towards the most vulnerable point.
Bursting into the vast main archive hall, Elara gasped.
Towering shelves, laden with centuries of records, stretched into the shadowy distance.
Dust motes danced in the emergency lights, creating an eerie glow.
But the scene was already compromised.
Men in dark tactical gear were already inside, methodically planting charges on support pillars and along the bases of the shelves.
One of them looked up, spotting Elara and Cassian.
He raised his rifle.
Cassian shoved Elara behind a rolling ladder, returning fire.
Bullets tore into ancient texts, sending paper fragments flying.
'They're going to bring the whole place down!' Elara cried.
They needed to move. Fast.
Another figure emerged from behind a row of shelves, a large, burly man.
He carried what looked like a portable detonator.
Cassian focused his fire, trying to intercept him.
The man ignored the bullets, his intent fixed on the detonator.
He pressed a button.
Suddenly, a high-pitched whine filled the air, followed by a series of sharp clicks.
Red lights on the planted charges began to flash in unison.
Elara's breath hitched.
Cassian roared, 'Elara, run!'
He tackled her, throwing her across the marble floor just as the first charge detonated.
A deafening roar swallowed all sound.
Flame and smoke erupted, engulfing the towering shelves.
A concussion wave slammed into Elara, lifting her from the ground.
She flew through the air, debris spinning around her.
A massive section of shelving, overloaded with ancient knowledge, buckled and began to topple where she had just been standing.
Dust and plaster choked the air.
'ELARA!' Cassian's voice, raw with desperation, ripped through the chaos.
