Chapter 8 of 10

Wyrm Bellies and Solar Flares

A guttural slosh echoed across the plaza as the last of the spire vanished down the Wyrm’s gullet. Rubble rained down, stinging Jaro’s face, but he didn’t flinch. The ground beneath their feet ceased its shuddering, replaced by a low, throbbing hum that resonated in his bones. Panic, raw and unbridled, erupted around them. Cadets, once prim and composed in their braided blazers, shrieked, scattering like mice across broken paving. Elite-tier spellcasters fumbled with their grimoires, their hands shaking too violently to weave even a basic charm. Melee combatants drew blades, then immediately dropped them, their faces drained of all color. [Class-S Dungeon Break Status: Uncontained. Threat Level: Catastrophic. Estimated survival rate for unblessed individuals: 0.003%.] A new message, stark and red, blared across their vision. Shouts overlapped as panicked youths collided, all scrambling toward the reinforced steel doors of the VIP bunkers set into the academy's main terrace. Rodel Vance, pale and trembling, was already halfway there, shoving a bewildered freshmen aside. He paused, glancing back at the colossal reptilian heads now beginning to unfurl from the chasm, and a new, desperate terror seized him. He turned to flee faster, tripping on his own two feet. One of the Wyrm’s heads, its emerald eyes glinting with predatory amusement, coiled forward with serpentine grace. Its maw, lined with rows of serrated obsidian fangs, opened wider than Rodel's entire torso. A sickening gulp, a flash of scales, and Rodel vanished, a choked gurgle the only sound he managed before being swallowed whole. “Rodel, you useless moron!” Inessa shrieked, a flicker of horrified disbelief crossing her features. “You’ll be digested before you can even scream for help!” Jaro didn’t hesitate. He was already moving. His grease-stained tunic settled against his ribs as his twin Dusk-Walker stilettos slid into his palms, their steel catching the green flash like slivers of twilight. His posture shifted, the lazy slouch replaced by a coiled, lethal readiness. His voice, flat and unhurried five seconds ago, cut through the din like snapped wire. “Everyone! Form up! Those bunkers are death traps if you can’t fight your way through the Wyrm’s spawned minions. Milla, stay with Inessa! Inessa, cover fire on that central head! I need a clear shot at its throat!” The fleeing crowd halted, staring at his sudden shift in posture and the steady bite in his tone. The laborer who swept their floors, the drudge they mocked, barked orders like a veteran vanguard. The courtyard's social pecking order collapsed under the weight of incoming teeth. A wiry youth from the 'Tinker' class, routinely assigned to grease traps, stepped forward with wrenches clicking at his belt. “What do you need, Scrapper? Tell us!” “Scrapper Tenza, those heads are spitting acid!” another shouted, an apprentice ‘Apothecary’ clutching a half-empty vial. “It’ll melt through anything!” Jaro grinned, a feral flash of white in the gloom. “Good. We’ll make it spit a lot more. Inessa, ‘Solar Flare’ on my blades! I need to cut that idiot out before he becomes a digestive byproduct!” Inessa, her initial shock giving way to a fierce exhilaration, nodded sharply. Her 'Sun-Singer' affinity sat strictly in the back lines of official manuals, but her 'Solar Flare' skill could feed searing thermal charges directly into foreign steel. She thrust her open palm toward his blades, gold fire sparking across her knuckles. The light coalesced, wrapping around the twin blades, making them blaze with an intensity that chased away the encroaching shadows. Her brow remained tight, but her gaze locked with his without a single flicker of hesitation. “Don’t you dare get digested, Jaro!” she yelled, a strange blend of exasperation and concern in her voice. “I need to see you try to explain this to the Headmaster!” Jaro’s focus was absolute. The golden flare hummed through the twin hilts, scorching the leather wraps against his palms. He launched himself forward, a blur of motion, leaping onto a fallen pillar, then using it as a springboard to vault towards the nearest Wyrm head. It turned, its massive jaw snapping, but Jaro was faster. He drove one radiant stiletto deep into the soft cartilage of its throat, setting an anchor. He scaled the creature’s hide like a spider, the second blade carving a groove through the scales as jade ichor hissed against the flagstones. “The mouth that ate Rodel!” he bellowed, his voice echoing across the plaza. “Keep its attention!” The common-tier cohort sprang forward without waiting for highborn direction. The mechanic launched a pneumatic line, snagging another neck ring and wrenching the brute off balance. The Apothecary began lobbing vials that erupted in blinding flashes, startling the beasts. Milla, surprisingly, was directing them, her earlier fear replaced by a steely resolve. “Aim for the eyes! It’s the softest part!” Jaro reached the head that had consumed Rodel. Its scales here were tougher, slick with digestive fluids. He took a deep breath, the stench of stomach acid burning his nostrils. He drove both empowered blades through the thick hide, twisting the edges against corded muscle until steam blew through the seam. The Wyrm thrashed, roaring in pain, trying to shake him off, but Jaro clung on, a limpet of pure, incandescent rage. He worked the glowing steel around in a wide arc, opening a flap big enough to crawl through. He didn't think, he just pushed, tumbling into the warm, gelatinous darkness of the Wyrm’s gullet. He landed with a wet thud in knee-deep pools of luminous bile. The air was thick, suffocating, reeking of decay and enzymes. Slabs of granite and structural iron drifted in the foam, hissing as their surfaces pitted. And there, amidst the churning, acidic mess, almost completely submerged but still shimmering faintly, was the obsidian spire. His eyes darted around, searching for Rodel. A muffled groan. The Chosen One was miraculously still alive, clinging precariously to a jutting, half-dissolved piece of the spire, his face pale green. The Golden Soul-Seed on his chest pulsed weakly, keeping him from being completely dissolved, but it looked to be drawing on his life force to do so. Ignoring Rodel for a moment, Jaro pulled the administrative cipher from his utility pouch. Its crystalline structure hummed with a faint blue light. He located the central console on the spire, miraculously intact, and jammed the cipher into its port. A soft *thunk* echoed in the cavernous space. The monolith pulsed, its black glass rippling with runic script. [Admin Cipher Accepted! Processing…] [Warning: Full System Wipe requires a Class Sacrifice. The designated user must relinquish their core Class in exchange for complete control over Architect protocols. Proceed?] Jaro stared at the floating script, the breath going tight in his ribs. Sacrifice his Class? His Dusk-Walker, the very essence of his combat prowess, the one thing that allowed him to keep Milla safe? The idea was unthinkable. But if he didn't… then all of them, Milla included, would be harvested. He grit his teeth, the acid stinging his skin. He had to. He knew he did. But the cost… it was everything. He looked at the prompt, his hand hovering over the 'Confirm' button.
