Chapter 5 of 10
Two-Second Spars and Manufactured Apocalypses

Jaro’s tired gaze sharpened, cutting through the lazy facade. Inessa Davor, standing before him in the restricted archives, was a whirlwind of ambition and barely contained ferocity. She held his sister’s fate in her hands, a flimsy recording crystal the lever.
“You want to spar?” Jaro’s voice was flat, devoid of its usual listless drawl. The air in the archives, thick with dust and neglect, turned brittle as a frozen wire. “At full power?”
Inessa’s chin lifted. “That’s right, Tenza. No mop buckets. No ‘accidental’ chandelier drops. Just you, me, and whatever you’re truly capable of. Prove it. Or Milla learns her ‘weak’ brother is a master manipulator.”
The silence stretched, broken only by the hum of the distant data cores. Jaro looked at the recording crystal, then back at Inessa. Her eyes, usually so sharp and self-assured, held a flicker of something raw and desperate. She sought more than an exposure; she wanted to test the wall he had built.
“Fine,” Jaro said, the single word a quiet thunderclap. He straightened, and the change was immediate, unsettling. The slump left his shoulders, his movements gaining a fluid precision that was terrifyingly unnatural for a 'Scrapper'. Even his shadow seemed to deepen, clinging closer to his form like a second skin.
Inessa blinked, her posture faltering. The change was more profound than she'd anticipated. The man before her was no tired custodian. He was a predator who had merely been pretending to sleep.
“Where?” she managed, her voice a little breathless.
“The training chambers below Level Delta,” Jaro replied, already moving. His steps made no sound, whereas her boots rang sharp against the iron grating. “No cameras there. Standard protocols will fail to trigger.”
They moved through the restricted corridors like wraiths, Jaro leading with an almost preternatural awareness of the facility’s hidden passages. Inessa, for all her agility, struggled to keep pace with his effortless glide. When they reached the designated training chamber, a stark, soundproofed room of reinforced plasteel, Jaro simply stepped into the center.
“Ready?” he asked, his voice low. No challenge, no arrogance. Just a flat inquiry, stripped of hesitation.
Inessa nodded, drawing her twin, gleaming adamantine blades. Her stance was impeccable, honed by countless hours of training, every muscle coiled for explosive action. She stood rank one, the paragon of her class. This was her chance to prove her standing.
Jaro didn’t even bother to take a stance. He just stood there, hands loose at his sides, his eyes like chips of obsidian.
Inessa surged forward, twin points flashing in a practiced double-strike aimed at his heart and throat. It was her signature move, one that had crippled countless simulation targets and real-world lesser beasts.
Jaro was gone. He was a whisper of motion, an afterimage. Before her steel finished its arc, he had pivoted inside her reach. Inessa felt a strange, chilling pressure against her wrist, then her elbow, then her knee. It wasn't a strike, not really. It felt more like a redirection of her own momentum.
Her carefully balanced attack crumpled. Her twin hilts clattered across the deck as her arms were pinned behind her shoulder blades, her forward weight driving her face toward the plasteel barrier. A single, unseen blade — a phantom edge — rested against her jugular. She felt the ghost of its cold steel.
Two seconds. Maybe less.
Jaro released her, stepping back into his original spot, his hands once again loose at his sides, as if he hadn’t moved at all. Inessa stumbled back, gasping, sweat stinging the bridge of her nose. Her face was flushed, partly from exertion, mostly from a profound, shattering humiliation. She had been dismantled in seconds.
“That was impossible,” she gasped, leaning hard against the wall. Her dropped weapons lay cold across the floor.
Jaro merely raised an eyebrow. “You asked for full power, Valedictorian. I didn't even use a skill. That was just… movement.”
[SYSTEM ALERT: Valedictorian Inessa Davor has experienced a profound defeat! Humiliation XP +50!]
[SYSTEM ALERT: Valedictorian Inessa Davor has developed the 'Unshakeable Admiration' debuff towards Jaro Tenza!]
Inessa ignored the chirpy system messages, pressing her palm against the cool plasteel. A strange warmth bloomed in her chest, replacing the shame. She had asked for the truth, and he had delivered it with brutal, elegant efficiency. The sensation felt unfamiliar, yet sharp. Her rival, the lazy Scrapper, was an absolute monster.
“Alright, Tenza,” she said, pushing off the wall, her voice oddly steady despite her trembling hands. “You have my word. Milla won't hear a thing. Now, the Headmaster's vault. You lead.”
Jaro nodded, the lazy slump returning to his shoulders, but the sharpness in his eyes remained. The habitual indifference snapped back over his face.
Breaking into the Headmaster’s vault was less of a challenge and more of a demonstration. Inessa, for all her knowledge of the building’s schematics, watched in awe as Jaro bypassed layers of arcane wards and biometric scanners with a dismissive wave of his hand, or a feather-light touch on a pressure plate that should have triggered an alarm. He moved like smoke, like sound itself, flowing through the defenses as if they were suggestions, not barriers. Inessa followed close behind, feeling heavy and loud on the cold metal.
The vault itself was a cavernous space, far larger than any record indicated. The chamber stored relics rather than basic ledgers, built like an underground redoubt. In the center, pinned upon a carved ebonwood plinth under a luminous barrier, lay a heavy, ancient parchment. Beside it, a stack of recent administrative reports.
Jaro unraveled the barrier with a snap of his fingers. He picked up the parchment. It was a map, etched with glowing ley lines and strategic markers. At its heart, a section was labelled: 'Class-S Nexus - The Crimson Maw'. The lines converged on a point just beyond the known boundaries of the Zircolian Wastes.
“This map is no simple survey,” Inessa whispered, scanning the administrative reports. “These… these are energy projections. Mana siphon schematics. They’re channeling power *into* the Crimson Maw. They’re not waiting for a Class-S break. They’re *manufacturing* it.”
Jaro’s grip on the map tightened. His slumping posture vanished, stripped down to razor focus. Solon and his administrative council were active collaborators, preparing raw sacrifices to nourish the Architect.
“This changes things,” Jaro said, his voice a low growl. “I can’t just dismantle the traps. I have to dismantle the entire operation.” He looked at Inessa, his eyes blazing with a dangerous resolve she had never seen before. “Every single one of them. Before the rift opens.”
The heavy vault door, sealed moments earlier, groaned on its tracks. A familiar, self-important voice boomed from the other side, amplified by a personal broadcast charm.
“Greetings, loyal followers! Your Chosen One, Rodel Vance, has made an unprecedented discovery! I, with my unerring instinct, have stumbled upon a secret dungeon beneath the very foundations of our hallowed institution! Prepare for glory, for I shall be the first to brave its depths and claim its treasures!”
Jaro and Inessa exchanged a look of pure exasperation. Rodel, the clueless idiot, had bumbled right into their highly classified, high-stakes infiltration.
The vault door hissed open, revealing Rodel standing there, holding a glowing crystal aloft, beaming into it for his imaginary audience. Behind him, emerging from the shadows of the corridor, was a figure Jaro recognized from official portraits: Headmaster Solon, his face etched with a benevolent, predatory smile.
“Ah, Rodel,” Headmaster Solon said, his voice as smooth as polished stone. He stepped fully into the light, his gaze sweeping over the vault’s contents, then settling on Rodel with an almost paternal warmth. “The Chosen One. Just the sacrifice the Architect needs to open the Class-S rift.”
