Chapter 8 of 10

Shards of Betrayal

997 words

The courtyard of Skogar Keep became a maelstrom. Steel shrieked against steel. The howl of Jarek’s loyalists, now turned against their former Elder, mingled with the snarls of Valdemar’s wolf-shifters. Sparks flew as Valdemar’s claws tore through the binding links around Olenka, the searing heat of his wolf-fire melting the metallic tendrils that drained her. Freedom rushed sharp through Olenka’s veins, an unleashed torrent of rime. Elder Yrsa, however, was not easily overcome. Cornered by Falken and a trio of his warriors, her eyes, usually clouded with false benevolence, blazed with a cold, desperate fury. Her face contorted, features elongating, skin stretching taut over bone. “Fools!” she shrieked, her voice no longer the comforting cadence of a matriarch, but a rasping, guttural growl that echoed off the glacier walls. “You think to stop me? You think to defy the true power?” A dark, inky mist began to coil around Yrsa, thick and suffocating, swallowing the torchlight. It pulsed with an oily, frigid cadence, mocking the crisp winter magic Olenka held. Her form blurred, elongating, twisting into something grotesque and horrifying. Bones cracked, joints snapping into place with wet, splintering crunches. Her pale pelt hardened into charcoal bristles, slick as pitch. Her teeth sharpened into jagged, venom-slick daggers, and her eyes burned deep violet, stripped of light. This was no mere wolf. This was a blight-wolf, corrupted by forbidden sorcery once whispered in nursery tales. It was the antithesis of the blessed pack-forms, a perversion that reeked of rot and dark ambition. The Skogar Beta hesitated, terror tightening his brow. But his loyalty to Jarek, and perhaps a burgeoning sense of right, spurred him on. “For the Pack!” he roared, lunging with his battle-axe toward the creature’s flank. He moved with the swiftness of a seasoned fighter, his blow aimed true. Yrsa, in her monstrous new form, moved faster. With a brutal flick of her massive black paw, she intercepted the warrior. The blow landed with a hollow crack of splintered ribs. His cry choked into silence beneath a spray of crimson. He spun sideways, hitting the frozen flagstones limp. His axe clattered, silenced. His chest lay crushed against the stone. (Jolt 1) Horror swept through the courtyard. Jarek, still recovering from his previous humiliation, witnessed the death of his Beta, the man who had stood by him even when his own Alpha aura decayed. A raw, guttural cry tore from his throat – a sound of anguish, of regret, of a sudden, desperate will to protect. He watched Yrsa turn her violet stare toward Olenka, who stood unbound as the Rime-Core thrummed within her ribs. “No!” Jarek roared, his voice hoarse, his decaying wolf attempting one last, futile surge of strength. He threw himself in front of Olenka, his own shifting form, ragged and weakened by the Rotting Affliction, a pathetic shield against the encroaching darkness. “Stay away from her!” Yrsa merely scoffed, a sound like grinding stone. “Still clinging to scraps, rejected whelp?” She didn’t even pause. Another casual swipe of her colossal paw, almost an afterthought. The blow connected with Jarek’s chest, not with the intention to kill, but to utterly obliterate. Olenka saw his frame buckle under the brutal strike. Jarek flew backward, a broken doll, skidding across the ice. He didn’t rise. His chest was unnaturally angled, his legs twisted. A pained whimper escaped his lips, barely audible over the din of battle, before silence claimed him. He was alive, Olenka knew, but his spine was shattered. The once-proud Alpha was broken, permanently crippled, relegated to a fate worse than death for a shifter. (Jolt 2) Olenka’s heart, already hardening from the Rime-Core’s influence, cracked further with a sharp, painful fissure. It wasn’t pity she felt for Jarek; it was a cold, bitter vindication, laced with a terrifying understanding of Yrsa’s boundless cruelty. This monster had framed her family, had tried to murder her, had massacred loyalists, and now had permanently crippled the man who once held her heart. The nascent ice in her chest pulsed with furious, lethal intent. Valdemar lunged beside Olenka, radiating furnace heat from smoking claws. “Olenka! Your kin!” he bellowed, cutting through the chaos. Yrsa stalked toward Olenka’s bound mother and father, black saliva dripping from her jowls. “No!” The word tore from Olenka’s throat, a sound raw with desperation. The Rime-Core surged, a torrent of crystalline frost, responding to her outrage. Every ounce of her focus, every atom of her new power, condensed into a single, devastating will. The very air around her solidified, dropping in temperature with a violent, audible snap. Ice crystals erupted from her hands, rising into towering slabs of glacial frost. The Shadow-Wolf was encased. Instantly. A colossal prison of solid, opaque ice, shimmering with an unholy blue light, froze her mid-lunge. The barrier stood solid and ancient, dense enough to defy iron. Olenka drew a jagged rasp as the Rime-Core demanded payment. A searing cold blossomed in her chest, a deeper, more profound chill than ever before. Her vision blurred at the edges, her limbs felt heavy, weighted down by frost. The ice around her heart thickened, encasing it further, dulling the sharp edges of her anger, leaving only a frigid, unyielding resolve. But Yrsa was not ordinary. The ice prison, meant to be her tomb, began to crack. Not from physical force, but from an internal, malevolent pressure. Dark tendrils of sorcery, thick as knotted roots, bored through the frost and boiled against the cold. The cracks spiderwebbed, groaning, protesting. With a deafening roar, a sound of pure, unadulterated evil, the ice prison exploded outwards, showering the courtyard in lethal shards of frozen malice. Yrsa lunged forward unchecked, venom running thick from her canines as she snapped toward the captives. There was no time to prepare, no time to think. Seeing the blackened teeth strike toward her kin, Olenka threw her body between them and the beast. Rime burned within her marrow as the curved fang drove deep into her shoulder.
