Chapter 3 of 10
The First Harvest

The flickering prompt intensified the hunger in his gut. A functioning stronghold. Hattusili’s spectral voice echoed in his mind, devoid of its usual cryptic lilt. *A domain requires sustenance, Sovereign. The Cradle of Ash holds little. Beyond, the Grave-Warren teems with fresh material.* Zardinu grunted. He required more than a shelter. He needed power, the kind that made empires tremble, not a glorified bone shack.
“Telip!” Zardinu’s voice, a raw rasp from disuse, tore through the chasm’s gloom. The colossal drake of bare ribs, a silent sentinel outside the emerging walls, turned its vast, empty eye sockets towards him. A low rumble, like tectonic plates grinding, vibrated from its ribcage. “Prepare for egress. We hunt.”
His current strike force was pathetic, a dozen freshly animated thralls cobbled together from the surrounding graveyard. Most were human, some animal – a bony boar, a multi-legged insectoid horror. They shuffled, clicked, and scraped, clattering against stone without natural grace. But they moved, and they obeyed.
He watched them for a moment, his brow furrowed. His arrogance, a lifelong companion, warred with a new, unsettling pragmatism. Before, he would have scoffed at such a paltry force. Now, he saw potential, a seed of an army. The Crucible had stripped him of everything, even his name, in the eyes of the Bastion. Now, he would use its rules to rebuild, to become something far more terrifying than the scion he once was.
With Telip leading, its enormous form scraping against the chasm walls, they exited their nascent stronghold and traversed the jagged, monster-infested ruins of what was once Alaca’s industrial district. The air grew thick with the stench of decay and something acrid, like burnt chitin. This was the subterranean reach, a Zone infested by the System’s twisted vermin.
[Entering Zone: Grave-Warren. Threat Level: Low-Moderate.]
[Primary Fauna: Corpse-Crawlers, Broodlings, Necrovores.]
The floor beneath their feet was a shifting carpet of dust and pulverized concrete, littered with chipped slivers and the occasional glint of rusted metal. The silence here was unnatural, oppressive, broken only by the clatter of Zardinu’s legion.
Suddenly, a low chittering rose from a collapsed building ahead. Scores of segmented bodies, dark and glistening, scuttled from the shadows. Chitin-stalkers. They resembled oversized, armored centipedes, each several spans long, with razor-sharp mandibles and multiple pairs of legs that tore at dirt with shocking speed. Their multifaceted eyes, dozens of them per head, glowed with malevolent hunger.
“Target the largest. Overwhelm the rest,” Zardinu commanded, his voice steady. He felt a peculiar thrill, a cold clarity in the face of battle. This was the work he was meant for.
His thralls surged forward. Telip, with a guttural bellow of cracking joint-work, brought its massive claw down, pulverizing three myriapods into a fine dust of shell and gore. The lesser shock troops, though clumsy, jabbed with rusted rebar and sharpened femurs, their movements coordinated by his will.
One myriapod wrapped itself around a biped warrior, its pincers snapping. The soldier's ribcage groaned under the pressure, but it held, hollow sockets fixed on the foe. Another fighter drove a piece of twisted pipe through the beast's head, severing its nerve core. The vermin convulsed, then went limp.

Zardinu didn't wait. He extended his hand, channeling the faint wisps of Soul Essence drawn from the fallen creatures. His eyes, usually a cold grey, now flickered with an internal, arcane light. “Rise!”
The mangled remains of the defeated Corpse-Crawlers twitched. Pale force crackled, stitching severed segments, reanimating fractured carapaces. Within moments, two grotesque myriapods, now stirred by Zardinu’s craft, rose from the heap of dead. Their mandibles clicked, their new, hollow eye sockets glowing with the same cold, blue light as their master’s other minions.
They immediately turned, joining the fray, their movements more fluid and aggressive than in life. Zardinu felt a rush, a surge of power that outstripped the initial mana drain. This was it. The snowball. Every kill wasn't just a victory; it was an investment, a fresh recruit.
The initial pack of centipedes, perhaps thirty strong, was swiftly overwhelmed. Zardinu’s ranks swelled to nearly two dozen, each addition cementing his burgeoning dominion. He felt a grim satisfaction as he directed their relentless assault. This was not a fight for survival; it was a harvest.
They pushed deeper into the warrens, tracing necrotic currents through collapsed tunnels and hollowed-out subterranean chambers. The chittering grew frantic. Soon, they reached a vast cavern where hundreds of centipedes writhed on the walls and floor, tending a central, pulsing mass.
The matriarch towered before him, easily ten times the size of its progeny, its carapace a sickly green-black, oozing viscous fluids. It radiated corrupted ether, a living hatchery of decay, its multiple eyes surveying its domain with predatory intelligence. Its eight massive legs, each as thick as Zardinu’s torso, were rooted to the flagstones, while its grotesque head, armed with mandibles that could shear concrete, swiveled menacingly.
[Threat Detected: Broodmother of the Grave-Warren. Elite Monster.]
[Warning: High regenerative capabilities. Vulnerable to concentrated energy attacks.]
“Telip, primary target!” Zardinu barked. “All units, defensive perimeter! Keep the smaller ones away!”
The draconic frame roared, shaking dust from the cavern ceiling, and charged. Its talons raked across the matriarch's plates, leaving deep gouges, but the tears immediately began to close, green ichor bubbling.
“Concentrated force!” Zardinu called out, throat dry. He extended his hand, drawing every shred of remnant vital drift from stone, air, and the chill of undeath. A pale, spectral flame coalesced in his palm. It wasn't powerful, not yet, but it was pure necrotic force.
He hurled it. The flame struck the Broodmother’s head, sizzling against its chitin. The creature shrieked, a sound like grinding stone and tearing metal. It lashed out with a leg, knocking Telip aside, sending the dragon skidding across the cavern floor.
The smaller vermin swarmed, attempting to overwhelm Zardinu and his vanguard. His osseous guard formed a barricade, clattering shells against rebar. Zardinu hurled spectral fire, chipping away at the behemoth's flesh-knitting vigor.
Telip, recovering, lunged again, jaws clamping onto one of the giant's limbs. Chitin splintered, and the queen thrashed wildly, its guttural shriek echoing. Zardinu felt the drain of mana, the constant pull of controlling his growing army, but he pushed past it, adrenaline a bitter taste in his mouth.
Finally, with a crack, Telip severed the limb. The monstrosity collapsed onto its side, convulsing, its flesh-weaving failing. Zardinu seized the opening, channeling his remaining mana. A dark, necrotic spear of pure power manifested in his hand.
He drove it into the exposed abdomen. The monstrosity spasmed, multifaceted lenses dimming, until a final tremor ran through its mass and subsided.
[Broodmother of the Grave-Warren defeated! Soul Essence gained: 50. Bone Fragments gained: 150.]
[Elite Monster killed. Minor Rank progress gained.]
[New Skill Unlocked: Corpse Integration (Allows permanent assimilation of elite monster remains into a Domain structure for defensive or offensive enhancements).]
Zardinu ignored the System prompts for a moment, simply staring at the immense, lifeless form. His chest heaved. He had done it. His first true kill, his first boss.
He took a deep breath, savoring the acrid smell of victory. His gaze locked onto the felled matriarch. Its bulk promised an invaluable siege weapon. He closed his eyes, a familiar coldness spreading through his arms, tuning to the necrotic power that defined his Class. He extended his hand, his voice a low, resonant growl.
“Rise, Matriarch. Serve your Sovereign.”
Black resonance pulsed, not merely restoring, but hardening. The decaying meat sloughed away to expose an armored lattice, denser and infused with sickly green. Its eight legs, now massive bone-blades, scraped against the stone. Its head, a toothy, chitinous maw, swiveled, its hollow eyes glowing with absolute loyalty.
This was no brittle decoy. This was a siege-unit, forged for direct assault.
[Broodmother (Ashen Variant) successfully reanimated. Class: Siege Crawler. Added to your Legion.]

Days later, Shilan stood at the edge of the lower sub-levels. The air hung still and heavy, but the usual chittering of swarms was absent. A grim quiet had descended.
Her squad, a dozen hardened Enforcers, spread out, weapons raised, their thermal scopes sweeping the desolate landscape. The intel report had been vague: 'unusual activity, high-level necrotic signature detected, possible rogue necromancer.' But the signatures were Zardinu’s, she knew it. The very thought made her stomach clench. The System insisted he was a glitch, a rogue anomaly, but the evidence was piling up against its perfect logic.
They found the cavern. The entrance was choked with shattered insect carapaces, but not a single intact carcass remained. Even chipped marrow pieces were sparse, as if swept clean. The ground was scarred with colossal drag marks, converging towards the gaping maw of the chasm.
No Zardinu. No dead bodies. Nothing remained but the lingering reek of necromancy and deep hollow silence.
Shilan knelt, examining a flat slab of concrete. Her gloved fingers traced the rough, deep-cut lines. It was a message, etched with what looked like a sharpened bone, perhaps by one of his monstrous minions.
I AM NOT HIDING.
