Chapter 10 of 10
Harrowhand's Harvest
1.2k words
The bone gates shrieked, mending with sickening speed as each fracture knitted shut under Zardinu's pulse of marrow-light. Behind him, the newly raised death knights, clad in obsidian bone-plate, leveled their serrated greatswords. Their hollow eye-sockets glowed with a malevolent emerald light, reflecting the bruised sky. The Crucible Corps, a torrent of maddened humanity, slammed against the renewed defenses, their supercharged blows glancing off the reinforced bone-walls with impotent thuds. Their roars were a din of distortion, no longer human, merely echoes of the relic's taint.
“Forward, Kurunta! Grotkrag! Break their spirit!” Zardinu’s voice, amplified by his newfound focus, echoed across the battlements. A cold, unyielding resolve pushed aside all doubt. The dread of failure remained, a sharp spur dwarfed by the burning need to conquer and dismantle.
Kurunta, a towering figure of crackling ash and shadow, bellowed a war cry that rattled the very air. “For the God-King! Feast on their folly!” He launched himself over the ramparts, a living maelstrom of destruction, his twin axes, ‘Grave’ and ‘Sunder,’ carving arcs of death through the dense ranks below. Grotkrag, the hulking Hobgoblin Warlord adorned with skeletal spikes, swung his colossal marrow-cleaver, each impact sending Corps fighters flying like discarded timber.
Telip, the skeletal dragon, unfolded vast wings above the territory, casting an enormous shadow. Its maw gaped, and a torrent of sickly green bile rained down, dissolving armor and flesh into steaming puddles of goo. The Broodmother, a grotesque multi-limbed nightmare, skittered across the outer walls, her chitinous claws tearing through the fanatic ranks, adding to the growing piles of raw material.
Shilan, pinned behind a crumbling barricade, watched the carnage unfold with a set, blood-smeared jaw. Commander Vaskos was a blur of manic speed, his charges driven by the pulsing, black-iron talisman strapped to his wrist. Its crimson glow throbbed, pumping vile fury into the already frenzied Corps. He was directing the assault, his eyes blazing with a fanatical devotion to the destructive power he wielded.
“The core! It’s the source!” Shilan yelled, her voice hoarse, attempting to be heard over the cacophony. She pointed toward the device, its etheric conduits glaringly obvious to her Enforcer training. “Shut it down, you damn fools! You’re being used!”
Vaskos merely laughed, a dry, rasping sound. “Used? We are purified! Chosen to cleanse this abomination!” He lunged at her, his edge a shimmering streak. Shilan parried, the clash of steel echoing sharply. He was faster, stronger, but she had her wits. She ducked under a sweeping strike, rolling to her feet and kicking out, aiming for his knee. He grunted, but the relic flared, absorbing the impact.
“There’s no reasoning with them,” Hattusili’s voice, calm and steady, resonated in Zardinu’s mind. "The relic warps their very spirit. They are puppets now, their will overridden. You must sever the strings."
Zardinu nodded, his gaze fixed on the commander and the pulsing bracer. His undead legions were holding, even pushing back, but the sheer numbers of the Crucible Corps were still overwhelming. He needed to end this, not just for his realm, but for the twisted souls trapped in the thrall.
[OBJECTIVE UPDATED: Neutralize Corrupting Artifact. Purge Aberration: Commander Vaskos.]
"Kurunta, open a path to that fanatic!" Zardinu roared, vaulting from the battlements in a shadowy blur. Ossified scythe-daggers, extensions of his power, materialized in his hands with a hiss of dark ether. He moved with brutal precision, parrying and weaving, each blow discharging necrotic shocks that withered the enhanced forms without killing them outright. He was severing, not slaying.
Kurunta tore a red swathe through the crowd toward the commander. Grotkrag provided heavy cover, his cleaver a constant barrier. Shilan pressed her counter, feinting high then sweeping low to keep the fanatic off balance.
Zardinu broke through the cordon, deflecting a dozen desperate strikes. He leveled a cold gaze at the commander. "You bleed for a lie. I will show you the truth of power."
The officer snarled through bloodshot sclera. “You are a blight! A coward who cheats death!” He swung his supercharged steel down in a crushing arc. Zardinu met it with an eruption of bone-craft, crossing his daggers against the blow. The clash sent sparks flying, a scream of protesting metal.
Zardinu shoved the officer back. The bracer flared wildly, funneling raw power into its bearer. But Zardinu was stronger, fueled by clarity and the immense power of his domain. Zardinu traced the brittle filaments binding the officer to the metal. He saw the fear, the desperation, beneath the zealotry.
With a guttural roar, Zardinu ripped his weapons free and plunged his bare fingers straight toward the man's chest. Not into flesh, but directly through the talisman's seething aura. The officer screamed as black tendrils snaked from Zardinu's fingers. He wasn't killing him. He was performing surgery on his very soul.
[OSSEOUS MANDATE: SOUL PACIFICATION INITIATED.]
Zardinu's fingers seized the relic's core in a freezing grip. He felt the sickening surge of stolen power, the chaotic symphony of a thousand overridden wills. He drove a clean, sharp spike of Osseous force straight into the housing. It shrieked, a high-pitched wail that seemed to tear at the fabric of reality.
The casing shattered, spraying black-iron shrapnel and fading crimson sparks. Severed from its taproot, the red haze recoiled from the conscripts like venom sucked from a wound. Their frenzied roars died, replaced by gasps, groans, and the confused cries of men regaining their senses. They stumbled, looking around with dazed, horrified eyes, seeing the carnage they had wrought.
Shilan, watching the spectacle, felt a knot in her stomach twist. It was a terrifying, beautiful display of power. Zardinu had not merely felled the commander; he had broken the yoke. The man collapsed, raving no longer, staring dumbly down at his shaking palms.
Zardinu stood over him, his chest heaving, his face stark. He looked past the dazed infantry toward Shilan. His gaze was unreadable, but held a newfound authority. The battlefield, moments ago a chaos of death, was now silent, save for the moans of the injured.
[ZONE: HIEROS-SEPULCHRE CONQUERED.]
[SOVEREIGN PROTOCOL: CONDITIONS MET. SOUL CONSUMPTION AVERTED.]
[DOMAIN: HARROWHAND’S HARVEST ESTABLISHED. SYSTEM RECOGNITION GRANTED.]
[CHOICE: INTEGRATE DOMAIN WITH ALACA BASTION, OR DECLARE INDEPENDENT SOVEREIGNTY.]
The holographic message shimmered before Zardinu, stark and unyielding. The choice was clear. He glanced toward Shilan, whose parted lips held a breathless question. Then he turned, slowly, to encompass his new nation: the towering bone walls, the legions of loyal dead, the scarred but now peaceful land. This was his creation, his power, his future.
“We are sovereign,” Zardinu declared, his voice ringing with absolute certainty. It was not a question, but a statement of undeniable fact. The words hung in the air, a silent defiance against the cosmic entities, against the Bastion, against anything that dared to stand in his way. He had found his truth, and with it, a path to forge a new destiny, not just for himself, but for the world. The Crucible had sought to break him; instead, it had merely forged a king.
