Chapter 8 of 10

The EMP Ultimatum

999 words

Through the thick, reinforced plasteel of the blast doors, Zinnia could make out his silhouette, a dark shape against the emergency amber lighting of the exterior corridor. He pressed a palm against the transparent panel, a theatrical gesture, as if to connect with her across the impossible divide. His voice, now thick with a forced pathos, broadcast directly into the vault. “Zinnia, my little lotus… reflect on our honeymoon on the Calypso Atolls? The way the sunset painted the bioluminescent reefs? The promises we made?” He sniffled dramatically. “Those were true. Our love was true. Cast aside this… this fleeting delusion. Return to me. Let me protect you from this… this *Bastian*.” Bastian, still leaning against a fractured data column, his hand pressed to his bleeding shoulder, let out a low, derisive snort. “Your ‘love’ was a carefully crafted cage, Garrick. And your promises were carved from lies.” Zinnia felt a surge of pure, unadulterated contempt. The sudden mental flash, which had nearly fractured her carefully constructed amnesia, now felt less like a threat and more like pure jet fuel. This man, who had twisted her life into a weapon against herself, dared to speak of true love? He dared to beg, not for her well-being, but for her *submission*? She looked at Bastian, a silent apology passing between them. Then she turned back to the blast door, a slow, predatory smile stretching across her face. “Calypso Atolls?” she echoed, her voice clear and cutting, amplified by the vault’s acoustics. “Oh, I recall those atolls, Garrick. Synthetic algae clogged the yacht's filtration systems because you bought the discount eco-package. You tried expensing the entire holiday as a tax write-off for ‘corporate marine research.’ She paused, letting the silence hang heavy. “And you scrambled to bribe the maritime commissioner with a wicker basket of lavender bath bombs when he flagged the registry.” On the other side of the door, Garrick’s hand twitched, his posture stiffening. “That’s… that’s not how it was, Zinnia. My darling, your mind… it’s been warped. I only ever sought to provide for you, to shield you from the harsh realities of the world.” His voice grew louder, more desperate. “This new self, this aggressive, cruel persona… it’s not you! It’s this… this *illness* brought on by the trauma. Just come back. Let me take you to the finest neural-reset clinic. We can erase all this unpleasantness. We can go back to how things were. You, by my side, soft and compliant.” Zinnia threw her head back and laughed, a bright, sharp sound that echoed off the metallic walls, utterly devoid of warmth. It was a laugh that promised ruin. “Soft and compliant?” She reached into her impossibly chic, ostrich-leather tote bag – a gift from Bastian, she suddenly realized, surfacing from an unindexed record – and rummaged inside. Her hand closed around a cool, heavy object. “Garrick, you pathetic, preening peacock,” she purred, her eyes glinting. “The only thing getting reset today is your financial portfolio.” With a flick of her wrist, she produced a sleek, matte-black device, no bigger than her thumb, emblazoned with a discreet, stylized lightning bolt. It was illegal, of course. Terribly so. But Zinnia Corvell had never been one to let trivialities like legality impede a truly satisfying act of revenge. Bastian drew back slightly in recognition. An EMP grenade. A high-yield, short-range electromagnetic pulse projector. “No! Zinnia, what are you –” Garrick’s panicked shout was cut off as Zinnia depressed the small, recessed button. There was no explosion. No concussive blast. Just a blinding, silent flash of brilliant violet light that seemed to consume the air itself, followed by a profound, shuddering *thrum* that vibrated through the floor and up Zinnia’s bones. The overhead emergency strips flickered wildly, then died, plunging the chamber into darkness save for the pale green glow of Bastian’s datapad, which he shielded with his forearm. Outside, Garrick’s voice was replaced by a series of choked, spluttering curses. The sound of frantic banging on the blast door began. Tamsin’s voice, tinny and triumphant, crackled through Zinnia’s earpiece. “EMP detected! Excellent timing, ma’am! All external data conduits and local server arrays for the subterranean facility are offline. Garrick’s ‘master key’ – which was essentially just a privileged access token on the main grid – is now inert. I’m initiating final phase protocol. Legal transfer of all remaining liquid assets from Van-Dorn Global personal accounts to the ‘Chrysos Foundation for Delusional, Gaslighting Ex-Husbands’ is now processing. System security is a complete mess for the next… oh, forty-five seconds. Should be complete before anyone can react.” A small, satisfied smile touched Zinnia’s lips. It was done. The backup racks, the blackmail, the leverage Garrick held – all vaporized. And his money, too. The sweet, sweet taste of petty victory. Then, a sharp, searing pain tore through her skull. It wasn’t the dull ache of the earlier mental spark; this was a violent, invasive intrusion, like a cracked bulkhead giving way behind her eyes. The world tilted. The faint hum of the vault became a roaring tempest in her ears. The EMP. It had been localized, contained to the Archives, but the feedback, the sheer force of it… Bastian, seeing the sudden shift in her posture, moved quickly. “Zinnia? Are you alright?” Her knees buckled. Her vision swam, replaced by a kaleidoscope of images, sounds, sensations. Three years of buried moments, compressed and agonized, fought for dominance. His face. Bastian’s face, etched with a grief she had inflicted. Garrick’s sneering triumph. The terror. The wrenching choice. The neuro-scrub spa treatment, a desperate measure, an attempt to numb a pain too profound to bear. It wasn’t just a flash; it was a deluge, a tidal wave of un-wiped agony. The legal loophole. The takeover. Two hours. It was all flooding back. Zinnia Corvell collapsed to the grimy floor, her datapad clattering from her loosened grip, the tiny screen displaying a flashing red alert: `NEURAL BLOCKER INTEGRITY COMPROMISED. MEMORY REINTEGRATION IN PROGRESS.`
