Chapter 9 of 10
The Bottom of the Abyss

Voldis felt the last shuddering breath leave Kaspars’s body. The hand gripping his tunic went slack, then fell. Cold, sharp air swept over them, smelling of ozone and damp stone, carrying the distant, guttural growl of something impossibly massive. Kaspars was gone. His final words, a fragmented puzzle piece, resonated in Voldis’s mind: “He’s waiting… at the very bottom… It was all… rigged… from the start.”
“The bottom,” Voldis murmured, gently laying Kaspars’s body down. He closed the dead man’s eyes. A familiar chill began to spread from his own sternum, a deep ache that had been his constant companion for as long as he could remember. Not just the Rotting Marrow, but the memory of another life, another body, another diagnosis.
*He was thirteen, thin and pale, hunched over a keyboard in a room perpetually dimmed by drawn blinds. The monitor glowed, a vibrant digital world unfurling before him. He was chasing a new world record in ‘Aethel’s Descent,’ a brutal permadeath roguelike. The doctor’s voice echoed in his memory, a bland, detached tone, listing symptoms, statistics, prognosis. A slow, systemic failure. Two years, maybe three. He hadn't cried. Crying was inefficient. He’d just nodded, then returned to the game. Every run became a desperate search for the perfect sequence, the ultimate bypass, the unbreakable exploit. The game was rigged, just like life. But if you were clever enough, fast enough, you could break the rules. You could escape the ending. He pushed himself, relentlessly, ignoring the fatigue, the tremors in his hands, the dull, persistent ache in his bones. The world record fell. Then another. He became a ghost, a legend. Always alone, always moving, always seeking the edge. Emotions were a vulnerability, a lag spike in the perfect execution. He couldn't afford them. Not then. Not now.*
“Voldis? We have to move.” Milda’s voice cut through the flashback, her lantern swaying, casting stark shadows on the walls. Her face was drawn, her gaze lingering on Kaspars’s corpse with a pity Voldis couldn't allow himself to feel. Zemyna stood beside her, her ice-blue eyes scanning the unseen depths, a predatory alertness returning to her posture. “He’s here. I can feel… a tremendous power.”
Voldis nodded, pushing the past back into its cage. He stood, his movements precise, economical. The Abyss floor was not smooth stone, but jagged, broken obsidian that seemed to drink Milda’s light. Ahead, the ground sloped downwards into a vast, open cavern. The air grew heavier, thick with an almost tangible dread, and the ceaseless roar of the descending Mist was replaced by a low, resonant thrumming. At the center of the cavern, a monolithic altar of black, veined marble stood, pulsing with faint, amethyst light. And on it, High Prelate Jurgis. He was no longer the kindly mentor, but a figure of chilling, ethereal power, his skin translucent, veins glowing with that same bruised energy. Two hulking, faceless acolytes stood guard, their forms blurring at the edges.
“My dear Voldis,” Jurgis’s voice boomed, resonating not just in the air, but in Voldis’s very bones. It was a voice that promised eternity and threatened oblivion. “You’ve arrived. Precisely as predicted.” He raised a hand, and the glow intensified, lashing out like tendrils.
Zemyna instinctively raised an ice barrier, but the light passed through it as if it were air. The tendrils wrapped around her, freezing her mid-step, encasing her in a shell of shimmering arcane ice. She struggled, her eyes wide with fury and fear, but no sound escaped her lips. Milda, too, found herself ensnared, her lantern’s light dimming as the eerie radiance encased her. Her gaze, however, met Voldis’s, a silent plea for understanding, a tragic acceptance of her fate. She knew. She had always known this path was littered with sacrifice.
“A necessary inconvenience, my boy,” Jurgis said, his eyes fixed on Voldis with an unnerving intensity. “To ensure our… merging… is undisturbed.” He descended from the altar, gliding across the obsidian floor, his form growing more substantial, more terrifying with each step. He carried a jagged shard of solidified indigo glass, pulsing like a captured heart. “You’ve done remarkably well, far exceeding even my most generous projections. A perfect vessel. Max level, impeccable stats, and a spirit honed by desperation. My true ascension awaits.”
Jurgis stopped before Voldis, his hand extending. The shard hovered, radiating immense power. “Now, for the final push.” With a sudden, brutal thrust, he plunged the glowing shard into Voldis’s chest, just above his heart.
A searing, soul-shattering pain erupted through Voldis. His vision swam, filled with an overwhelming, blinding white light. The shard pulsed inside him, pouring raw, unadulterated power into every fiber of his being. It was the EXP of a thousand forgotten heroes, the accumulated might of a dying world, all channeled into him. His body screamed, muscles bulging, skin stretching, his very essence overloaded.

The pain was unbearable, but Voldis grit his teeth, his mind a steel trap. This was it. The moment he had gambled everything on. Jurgis retracted the shard, a triumphant, almost orgasmic smile spreading across his translucent face. “The transition begins. Your consciousness will fade, a whisper in the wind, as I claim this magnificent form.” He closed his eyes, his essence beginning to flow, a river of violet energy pouring from his spectral body and into Voldis’s overcharged form.
In that infinitesimally small window, as Jurgis’s soul began its transfer, Voldis moved. His fingers, despite the agonizing influx of power, flew across his phantom inventory. A tarnished Iron Greave, chipped and cracked. A tattered Woolen Cloak, frayed at the edges. A rusted, blunted Dagger of Sacrifice. Each item, hoarded from the earliest depths of the Athenaeum, carried a potent negative enchantment: *[-10 Strength, -5 Vitality, -20 Dexterity, -25 All Resistances, -50 Max HP].*
He equipped them all in a blur, the system processing his inputs with the same cold, calculating efficiency as always. The flood of power that had just brought him to his peak was suddenly, violently, reversed. His body, infused with a max-level soul, now wore the garbage of a level one mob. The conflicting energies ripped through him, destabilizing the entire process. His HP, artificially inflated by the max-level injection, plummeted.
