Chapter 4 of 10

The Lantern's Toll

1.2k words

The Grawl-Beast’s immense form lay still, a grotesque monument in the swirling mist. The stat boost settled into his limbs as the crimson glyphs dissolved. He didn't linger. Every second counted. He scanned the immediate surroundings, his eyes piercing through the lingering tendrils of fog, searching for an exit, a safe haven, anything. His gaze landed on a faint, flickering light through a shattered archway in the cliff face – a checkpoint, if the game's brutal logic held true. “This way,” he rasped, his throat dry. He didn't wait for Milda, already moving with a practiced urgency. The air here was marginally clearer, the mist thinner, but the stench of damp stone and ancient death still permeated everything. Milda followed, her bronze vessel casting an amber glow, the wick within pulsing with a measured rhythm. Her footsteps were quiet, almost ethereal. The silence between them was heavy, broken only by the drip of unseen water and the distant, mournful cries of creatures lost in the depths. The archway led into a small, circular chamber carved directly into the rock. A faded sigil, depicting a stylized hourglass, was etched into the floor, confirming it as a brief respite point. Crude benches lined the walls, and a few tattered sacks lay discarded in a corner. Safe, for now. Voldis slumped onto a bench, pulling a soiled linen strip from his satchel. A jagged shard of rock had torn his forearm during the cage crash, and though he’d ignored it until now, the blood was a steady seep. He meticulously cleaned the wound, wrapping it tight. Milda sat opposite him, fingers wrapped around the iron handle of her light. Its light seemed to draw the mist in, absorbing it, preventing it from encroaching on their small sanctuary. Her eyes, usually so shadowed, held a strange, distant clarity. “The fog… it hungers for more than just warmth,” she murmured, her voice barely a whisper. “It feeds on… what makes us *us*.” “What are you talking about?” Voldis asked, not looking up from his bandaged arm. He knew her lantern was cursed, but the specifics were unknown lore to him. Milda raised the cage, holding it high. The flame inside flared, a vibrant orange that momentarily chased away the chamber’s gloom. As it did, a wisp of smoke, shimmering with iridescent specks, curled upwards from the wick, dissolving into nothingness. A soft, pained sigh escaped her lips. “Each time… it takes something. A memory. A feeling. To keep the darkness out.” Her gaze, unfocused for a moment, suddenly sharpened, locking onto Voldis. A single tear tracked a path through the dust on her cheek. “It took a memory… of a boy. A boy who… who died. Over and over. A boy who tried to save us all. A boy named… Voldis.” Her voice cracked, laden with an grief that felt ancient, yet freshly opened. “You’re not supposed to be here. Not like this. You… you broke it. You’re *alive*.” Voldis froze, his bandaged arm resting on his knee. The casual ruthlessness he wore like armor faltered. Milda’s words were a tremor, an echo from a past that wasn't his, yet was intimately tied to her. *A previous timeline?* The thought was jarring, a glitch even he hadn't anticipated. He met her gaze, his own emotions carefully shuttered. There was no denying the raw, aching sincerity in her eyes. He said nothing, his silence a shield. Before the fragile moment could shatter completely, a sharp scraping sound echoed from the corridor they’d just exited. Heavy footsteps, followed by the distinctive clink of high-quality armor. Zemyna. She burst through the archway, her ceremonial rapier drawn, its polished blade reflecting the lantern light. Her face was flushed, her elegant braids slightly disheveled. Her face was taut, lips pressed to a razor edge. “There you are, you deceitful cheat! I knew it! To bypass the Proving. To disgrace the Alderkin name. You will be arrested, Voldis! Right here, right now!” Voldis sighed. This was inconvenient. “Zemyna, now is hardly the time for your theatrics.” “Theatrics?!” she practically shrieked, taking a step forward. “You made a mockery of my honor! My station! My *destiny*! I tracked you through the very depths, student. My sense for… anomalies, led me straight to your glitched trail.” Suddenly, from the gloom behind her, a guttural shriek tore through the air. Two chitin-armored crawl-fiends, bristling with compound eyes and hooked mandibles, lunged from the shadows to flank Zemyna. They were low-level mob fodder, but dangerous in numbers. Zemyna, caught off guard, spun, her rapier flashing, but the sheer speed of the first fiend was too much. It raked its claws across her shoulder guard, sending sparks flying. “Behind you, fool,” Voldis called, sliding forward on the gravel. He knew the beasts' three-strike attack rotation. He stepped between them, drawn iron ringing against an overhead mandible to divert the blow. Zemyna pivoted, driving her slender blade through the first creature's dorsal plate. The carapace split with a wet crack. When the partner creature snapped at her ribs, she turned inside its arc, skewering the softer tissue under its neck. Voldis circled two more as they scuttled into the chamber, timing their recovery lag to drive his edge into their exposed joints. Milda's beacon flared, driving the outer mist back toward the entrance. The four carcasses twitched on the floor tiles. Zemyna stood over them, black fluids running down her weapon. Her shoulder guard was scratched, but her eyes blazed with a fierce pride. She turned to Voldis, her chest heaving. “There! You see? I am not… worthless. I am strong! I am capable! Acknowledge it, you infuriating… you… just *acknowledge* it!” Her voice rose, hitting a raw, emotional peak. In her agitated state, she gestured wildly, her hand sweeping across a faint, almost invisible sigil etched into the wall beside her. It glowed a malevolent crimson. [Echo Log: WARNING! Proximity Trap Activated! ‘Ruin-Spike’ Wall Trap – Imminent!] A metallic shriek tore through the air. From a hidden recess, a massive, rusted iron spike, tipped with a sickly green, began to swing down with terrifying speed, aimed directly at Zemyna’s head. There was no time to dodge. Voldis reacted without thought. He lunged, shoving Zemyna clear with all his strength, sending her sprawling onto the ground. The spike, meant for her, instead plunged into his left shoulder with a sickening *thud*, tearing through his leather armor and biting deep into flesh and bone. Liquid fire spread along his collarbone, blurring the outlines of the room. The green tip glowed, then pulsed, injecting something foul into his bloodstream. [Echo Log: Corrosive Venom Injected!
