Chapter 8 of 10

Strut and Strike

Bardo Fain, cloaked in the light-devouring onyx wrap, executed a slow, almost languid pivot at his end of the catwalk. His `Chrom-Flesh` make-up caught the floor luminescence, painting his jaw with unnatural highlights. He began his own advance, mirroring Pellio's pace, a predatory counterpoint to Pellio’s rigid, almost robotic adherence to blocking. The crowd, a vast, murmuring entity, registered the dual-model progression with appreciative gasps, interpreting Bardo's ominous presence as high-concept performance art. Pellio moved with the practiced precision Liris had drilled into him. Left foot, right foot, gaze fixed on the unseen horizon beyond the glare. His posture stayed ramrod straight, the experimental suit humming softly against his skin, its integrated uplink cable a barely-there weight in his sleeve. Each step brought him closer to the glowing node set into the glass floor, a critical access point for the Vondar `Core Nexus`. From the sound booth, Liris Vondar watched through a bank of screens, her knuckles whitening against the edge of the console. She saw Bardo, her cousin’s latest hire, not as a rival model, but as a wolf closing on her vulnerable muse. Her fingers danced over the `Aura-Mix` console, a bespoke environmental control board. "You want performance art, Bardo?" she muttered, a feral grin touching her lips. "I'll give you a damn spectacle." Bardo’s theatricality was boundless. As he reached the center of his designated runway segment, his black wrap billowed, and from within its voluminous folds, he produced a `Plume-Boa` – a grotesque, oversized feather accessory that seemed to writhe with its own dark life. It wasn't until the first handful of iridescent needles flew, barely visible against the pulsing light, that Pellio’s neural pacemaker flared a frantic crimson. A silent alarm, for his eyes only. He didn't flinch. He couldn't. The darts, tipped with a neurotoxin known as `Nocicept-Gamma`, were designed for silent, swift incapacitation. They zipped toward Pellio, aimed for his exposed neck, his hands, anywhere the skin was vulnerable. But Pellio was no stranger to projectiles, nor to anticipating trajectories. Years of weaving a cargo bike through rush-hour drone swarms and blind intersections had trained him to calculate trajectories on instinct. As the first quill whispered past his ear, Pellio executed a `Rift-Turn` – a tight, almost instantaneous pivot Liris had perfected for dramatic reveals. The pivot wasn't a dodge in the traditional sense; it was a continuation of his blocking, designed to keep his chest oriented toward the cameras. He rotated on the ball of his foot, the tailored weave swishing, and the `Nocicept-Gamma` dart struck the glass floor where his shoulder had been milliseconds before with a dry click. Another volley, aimed lower. Pellio responded with a `Glide-Step`, a fluid, sliding motion that carried him three feet to the left, his gaze still forward, his stride unbroken. The steel-tipped flechettes skittered harmlessly against the polished runway. The crowd, interpreting his precise, almost balletic movements as intentional choreography, erupted in cheers. “He’s incredible!” someone shouted, their voice amplified by the venue’s `Sonus-Array`. Liris, however, saw the deadly dance for what it was. Her expression tightened. "You want to play, Bardo? Let's play." Her fingers flew across the console. A bank of `Vapor-Jets` hidden beneath the catwalk, usually reserved for atmospheric effects, suddenly roared to life. A targeted plume of opaque `Chrono-Mist` erupted directly in Bardo's path, obscuring his vision just as he prepared another deadly toss. Bardo disappeared into the manufactured fog. Disoriented, Bardo stumbled. The remaining darts he launched went wild, scattering across the front row and plinking uselessly against the transparent barrier screens. A few socialites gasped, thinking it was part of the show, a daring break from convention. Pellio used the momentary chaos. With his next step, his coat sleeve brushed the terminal node on the glass. A mechanical latch clicked. The concealed uplink cable, disguised as a decorative seam, slotted home. A green light pulsed on the node. The `Aura-Mix` console in Liris's booth confirmed the connection: `UPLINK ESTABLISHED. CORE-ACCESS INITIATED.` Pellio continued his march, his face an impassive mask, the fabric line now acting as a physical conduit into the fortified `Core Nexus`. Beneath the blinding lights, his chest screen, hidden beneath his shirt, began its urgent progress report: `BYPASS UPLOAD: 1%... 5%... 12%...` Bardo, now emerging from the `Chrono-Mist`, his `Chrom-Flesh` make-up streaked with condensation, let out a frustrated hiss. He saw the green light on the node, saw Pellio’s subtle, almost imperceptible shift in focus. The hacker was doing something, something critical. Bardo snarled, dropping the feathered boa, and reached inside his voluminous drape for something else. A pair of `Gloom-Glaives`, sleek, black throwing knives, emerged. These were not for show. Liris was ready. "Strobe it!" she commanded, her voice cutting through the comms. The `Lux-Array` above the catwalk, a grid of high-intensity `Phantasm-Flickers`, exploded into a disorienting barrage of light. White-hot flashes, sharp and blinding, assaulted Bardo from all angles, making it impossible to aim. Pellio, his eyes trained by years of low-light computing, barely registered the strobes. His internal display showed a steady data transfer, routing the patch into the `Core Nexus`. `OVERWRITE PROGRESS: 45%... 58%... 71%...` Each percentage point pushed the pacemaker's kill-switch timer back another fraction. The crowd was in raptures. The strobes, the coolant fog, the sudden pivots, and the near-misses registered as an astonishingly elaborate display of kinetic haute couture. They cheered louder, mistaking Pellio’s life-or-death struggle for theatrical brilliance. Gravis Vondar, meanwhile, watched from a `Sky-Box` balcony, his face a contorted mask of pure, unadulterated fury. His own models had stumbled, his bespoke smart-suit had pinched, and now Liris’s collection, fronted by this infuriatingly stoic courier, was stealing the entire show. The applause, the adulation, it was all for her. He knew nothing of the malware, the hacker, the assassin. All he saw was his cousin’s success. He saw the stage fixture, glowing green, and the line of light running straight toward Liris's rigging. He didn’t understand what it was, but he knew, with the certainty of petty malice, that it was *hers*. Liris watched the counter tick up: `98%... 99%...` The tension in her shoulders eased for half a breath. Then, from the `Sky-Box` above, Gravis Vondar, driven by a blinding, childish rage, lunged. With a guttural grunt, he ripped a thick, armored conduit from the wall – the `Main Power Link` for the entire `Core Nexus` display, conveniently located next to his private viewing platform. A shower of blue sparks rained down over the catwalk, the floor array flickered violently, and the entire runway went black.
