Chapter 10 of 10
The Contract and the Cozy

Jarlath pressed his mouth hard against hers, the salt of sweat and a sharp copper trace lingering between them. Odie gathered the cotton of his collar in both fists, tugging him down until their foreheads met. Down the hall, booted feet thudded across hardwood while estate guards wrestled Kaelus Volkov into restraint cuffs. Jarlath leaned heavily against her, his ribs shuddering with each exhale.
He eventually broke away, panting, his forehead resting against hers. His eyes, still wild, searched her face. “You’re okay, right? He didn’t… you’re not hurt?”
Odie chuckled, a low, husky sound. “I’m fine, Jarlath. Just a little… surprised.” She nudged his chin with her nose. “And a lot less lazy than I let on.”
He let out a shaky laugh, then pulled her into another quick, possessive kiss. “I noticed.”
Security finally reached them, pulling a groaning Kaelus from the shattered coffee table. A stern-faced Director Corvan, who had evidently emerged from his stealth drone control booth with perfect timing, waved them off. “Take him away. And someone get a medic for the glass shards. Jarlath, Odie, you two are needed. Urgently.”
“Urgently?” Odie mumbled, still dazed, as Jarlath kept an arm around her, steering her out of the ruined lounge.
“The League Board,” Corvan said, a glint in his eye. “They’ve made their decision.”
In the Guildhouse conference room, a blue projection of League Chairman Roric hovered above the lacquered maple table. Jarlath rested a palm against Odie's shoulder blades. Roric cleared his throat, static buzzing through the speaker. “While Ms. Rostova’s initial paperwork contained irregularities, her match performance and the testimony filed by Director Corvan and Captain Voss cannot be ignored. Effective immediately, Odelia Rostova is reinstated to the active roster. Furthermore, her terms have been updated to reflect tier-one compensation.”
A fresh parchment file chimed onto the glass panel, stamped with the team emblem. Odie picked it up, her eyes scanning the fine print. Her jaw dropped. The new base salary was astronomical, dwarfing her previous ‘do the minimum’ expectations. It even included clauses for performance bonuses, endorsement deals, and a fully paid-for, bespoke VR pod. Her real name, Odelia Rostova, was emblazoned clearly at the top. And a new clause: ‘Gender: Female’.
“No more binding,” Jarlath murmured beside her, a possessive smile playing on his lips. “No more pretending.”
Odie looked at him, a wide, genuine smile spreading across her face, the kind she usually reserved for a particularly satisfying snack. “I suppose not.” She then turned to the holo-projection. “Thank you, Elder Roric. I assure you, I will make the most of this.” The chairman merely nodded, his gaze lingering on the new contract. Corvan, meanwhile, was already calculating projected sponsorship revenues with a satisfied hum.
Weeks later, the Grand Finals arena boomed with fifty thousand screaming fans under sweeping sodium spotlights. Stadium feeds displayed the starting rosters in gold leaf. When the squad walked onto the raised dais, the roar shook the floorboards. Jarlath, ever the charismatic front-man, waved to the fans, his signature confident grin in place.
Then Odie emerged. Overhead strobes flared across her newly cut jersey, trimmed in azure and silver satin without the bulky under-padding she once relied on. Her dark hair was swept back, a subtle silver streak woven into the front, glinting under the lights. She looked fierce, elegant, and entirely herself. The crowd gasped, a collective murmur rising as they finally saw ‘Odie’ as Odelia.
Jarlath, caught mid-wave, completely missed a step. His foot tangled with his other, and he stumbled, nearly face-planting on live television. A ripple of embarrassed laughter went through the crowd, quickly overshadowed by cheers for Odelia. He recovered with a flushed grin, shooting her a mortified, yet adoring, look. Odie, unfazed, merely winked at him before taking her place at her bespoke VR pod. In the pods, their tandem offensive dismantled the opposing backline in under twenty minutes. Three clean rounds later, the series ended in a shutout. Chants of “O-DEL-IA!” rattled the glass partitions as she lifted the polished tournament cup alongside Jarlath.
Later that week, in the sterile quiet of Dr. Henrik’s office, Jarlath sat across from the therapist for what he hoped was his final session. “So,” Henrik said, a knowing smirk on his face, “how’s the ‘heart condition’?”
Jarlath felt heat rise to his ears. “Miraculously cured, Doctor. Apparently, the remedy was simply… honesty.” He rubbed the back of his neck. “And a fair bit of explosive relief.”
Henrik nodded, scribbling something on his pad. “Indeed. Fascinating how psychological distress can manifest so physically. Well, Captain Voss, I believe you are officially discharged from therapy. Your heart seems to be in excellent working order. In fact, I’d say it’s never been healthier.” He gave Jarlath a pointed look. “Just try not to trip over your own feet on national television again.”
Jarlath groaned, but the smile he gave Henrik was genuine. “I’ll do my best.”
Back at the team estate, the grand corridors fell quiet after three straight days of banquet parties. Odie lay sideways across her mattress, thumbs nudging the thumbsticks of her handheld console while Jarlath's arm pinned her hips securely against the sheets. He radiated steady warmth through his flannel shirt, far superior to any plug-in fleece throw.
“You know,” Odie mumbled, not looking up from her game, “this is exactly what I signed up for. Free housing, free food, and a perfect setup to do the bare minimum.” She adjusted her position, pressing closer to Jarlath’s warmth. “Though the title trophy and the massive pay raise are nice bonuses, I guess.”
Jarlath chuckled, stroking her hair. “Bare minimum, huh? You just dismantled three world-ranked duelists and handed us the trophy.”
“Details, details,” she waved a dismissive hand. “The work is done. Now, optimal lounging conditions are paramount.”
A soft *thwip* sound broke the comfortable quiet. A glossy flyer slid neatly under their door. Jarlath, with a sigh, reached for it. The headline, emblazoned in a tropical font, read: “The Sunstone Serenade: A Couples-Only Hollow-Crown Tournament in Paradiso Peaks, Hawaii!” Below it, a picture of two players, silhouetted against a breathtaking sunset, embraced on a pristine beach. The event was sponsored by the League, offering an all-expenses-paid retreat.
Odie glanced up from her screen, squinting at the glossy card stock. “Hawaii? Couples only?” She groaned into his shoulder. “Does this mean I actually have to pack a swimsuit?”
