Chapter 32: Exodus from the Core

907 words

Alarms shrieked, a raw tearing sound that vibrated through Kael's bones. He plunged deeper into the core sectors, the network a burning web around him. OmniCorp's lockdown was absolute, every conduit choked with monitoring packets, every physical corridor swarming with Sentinels. Invisible, he slipped past a patrol of heavy combat drones. Their optical sensors swept the polished chrome halls, laser designators painting phantom targets. His optical camouflage shimmered, straining against the ambient light. "Status, Echo," Kael whispered into his comms. His breath fogged slightly inside the rebreather mask. "Perimeter breaches detected across four sectors, Ghost. Pressure's mounting," Echo's voice crackled, laced with static. "They know you're here. They just don't know *where*." Right. He punched a command, sending a localized EMP burst through a maintenance shaft. Lights flickered, momentarily blinding a Sentinel squad just ahead. Opportunity seized. Kael sprinted, his mag-boots silent on the floor. He rounded a corner, entering a data containment hub. Rows of glowing cryo-tubes lined the walls. Within them, pale figures floated, suspended in nutrient gel. Captured data-ghosts, their consciousnesses forcibly contained, awaiting re-education or dissection. Their latent network signatures hummed a mournful song. "Hold on," Kael murmured, extending a hand to a console. His neural interface flared, tendrils of light connecting him to the system. He bypassed OmniCorp's firewalls in milliseconds. A rapid-fire sequence of commands initiated the data transfer. The cryo-tubes hummed louder, then a soft *pop* echoed through the chamber. Essences, shimmering like disturbed water, flowed from the tubes. They coalesced around Kael, a silent, swirling multitude of rescued minds. They didn't speak, but their collective relief was a palpable pressure. "We need the Aethel," Kael projected, his voice a thought in their collective space. "Point me." Gestures of light, faint and quick, directed him to a secure vault deeper within the hub. OmniCorp’s security was layered, but not impenetrable to a mind like his. Another console. Another interface. This time, the resistance was fiercer, a digital hydra thrashing against his intrusion. He felt the system fighting back, trying to burn him out. He pushed harder, siphoning the data into his secure neural bank. Fragments of Aethel code, shimmering with ancient power, flowed into him. He felt the raw, untamed intelligence, a whisper of untold cosmic secrets. Suddenly, the hub door hissed open. Red emergency lights bathed the room. Sentinel drones poured in, their multi-jointed limbs clicking, weapons charging. "Contact!" Echo's warning was unnecessary. Lasers crisscrossed the room. Kael moved. He dodged a beam, feeling the heat sear the air beside his cheek. The rescued data-ghosts swirled around him, some manifesting as momentary distortions, distracting the drones. Plasma bolts tore into the cryo-tubes, exploding nutrient gel. Kael returned fire with his wrist-mounted disruptor, disabling a drone's optical array. He threw a flash-grenade. The room erupted in blinding light and deafening static. Amidst the chaos, he sprinted for a service hatch, the Aethel fragments burning with potential inside his mind. Behind him, the Sentinels recovered with terrifying speed. Their heavy mag-rifles hammered against the hatch as Kael sealed it. He could hear them cutting through the blast-door. "Exit vector, Echo!" Kael demanded, sprinting through narrow maintenance tunnels. The rescued data-ghosts coalesced into a loose, shimmering sphere, following close. "Sub-level access. Caverns. They're deploying heavy assets," Echo reported, her voice urgent. "You have maybe sixty seconds before they breach the main tunnel." Sixty seconds. Not enough to find a secure route off-world. Too much to surrender. He slid down a vertical shaft, landing softly on a platform above a yawning chasm. Below, the dark stretched infinitely. Uncharted. Unmapped. The desolate caverns of Luna, a labyrinth of geological chaos. OmniCorp's forces were on his tail. He could hear their footsteps, the whirring of their drones, growing louder, closer. He looked back, a wall of light and metallic screams echoing from the tunnel above. No choice. He leapt into the abyss, the rescued data-ghosts trailing behind him like a comet's tail. The cold, ancient air rushed past him, carrying him deeper into the unknown, a desperate flight into Luna's dark heart. Behind them, OmniCorp Sentinels reached the ledge, their searchlights cutting through the gloom, illuminating the path Kael had taken. He fell faster, the light from above shrinking, knowing they would not give up the chase, not even into the void. Somewhere below, the ground waited. What horrors, or salvation, lay hidden in the moon's forgotten depths remained a mystery, but the hum of OmniCorp's grav-lifts was already descending, their pursuit relentless, their fury absolute.
