Chapter 5 of 22

The Outlaw Loadout

The rain outside Sector 3 didn’t just fall; it eroded. Silas Vance stood in the subterranean belly of an abandoned subway maintenance tunnel, the air thick with the smell of stagnant water, rust, and cheap fuel. Above him, the distant rumble of New Port City’s mag-lev trains sent rhythmic vibrations through the concrete walls, flaking off ancient chips of industrial paint. He didn’t care about the city above. His focus was entirely on the stainless-steel workbench illuminated by a single, buzzing halogen lamp. Laid out across the oil-stained metal were the instruments of his impending violence."If the Don finds out I’m helping you siphon family resources for a personal suicide mission, he won’t just execute me," Bianca Falcone said, her voice echoing softly off the damp tile walls. She stepped out of the shadows, dragging a heavy, olive-drab tactical crate across the floor. "He’ll have my cybernetics stripped while I’m still awake."Silas didn't look up from the workbench. His large hands were steady as he systematically disassembled his Glock 22. He ran a solvent-soaked rag down the match-grade barrel, removing the carbon buildup from the casino firefight. "Then turn around and walk away, Bianca. I didn't ask you to follow me down here.""You didn't have to ask," Bianca snapped, slamming the tactical crate onto the table. The latches popped open with a heavy, pressurized hiss. Inside lay rows of black-market military hardware, nestled in protective foam. "Apex just declared war on the Falcone family by shooting up our property. If you go into Sector 4 alone, you die, he gets the Sterling Tech encryption key, and the Cyber-Kings run this entire city by tomorrow morning. I'm not letting a tech-brat take our crown because a washed-up cop has a death wish."Silas reassembled his sidearm with practiced, muscle-memory speed. The slide locked back with a sharp, metallic clack. He slammed a fresh seventeen-round magazine into the grip and chambered a round before holstering it. "Sector 4 is a dead zone. The police don't patrol the container yards, and the entire grid is managed by Apex’s Net-Weavers. The moment I step past the perimeter wall, my biometric signature will flag every drone in a three-mile radius.""Which is why you aren't going in dressed as a low-level mob thug," Bianca said. She reached into the crate and pulled out a heavy, matte-black tactical vest constructed from layered liquid-aramid fiber. "Falcone black-ops spec. Subdermal kinetic absorption. It’ll stop a standard submachine gun round at point-blank range. But more importantly, it has an integrated thermal-baffling liner. It hides your body heat from automated drone sweeps."Silas took the vest, feeling its dense weight. He slipped it over his worn leather jacket, cinching the straps tight against his ribs. The automated diagnostic sensors inside the armor flickered to life, syncing with his earpiece."Now for the real problem," Bianca continued, her eyes dropping to the base of Silas’s skull, where the jagged micro-port of his Chronos-V processor rested beneath his skin. "Your little parlor trick at the casino. I saw the security footage, Silas. You moved faster than our automated targeting turrets. That’s military-grade Overclocker hardware. What’s the catch?"Silas paused, his fingers hovering over a row of fragmentation grenades inside the crate. The memory of the military black-site, the rain, and Captain Hayes’s dying face flashed behind his eyes. "The catch is fifteen seconds. If I keep the Bullet Time Contingency active for a single tick past fifteen seconds, the neural bandwidth cooks my cerebral cortex. It leaves me temporarily blind and paralyzed during the system cooldown."Bianca stared at him, a cold, calculating look passing over her sharp features. "Then fifteen seconds is all you get. But against the Cyber-Kings, speed isn't enough. You need to hit hard enough to crack an Iron-Clad's skull."She reached deeper into the crate and pulled out a weapon that made Silas’s eyes narrow. It was an automatic combat shotgun, the Benelli M4 Overkill variant, heavily modified with a shortened shroud, an electronic smart-choke, and an under-barrel magnetic pulse launcher."Eight-round capacity," Bianca detailed, tapping the side of the weapon. "Loaded alternating with high-explosive slugs and magnesium dragon's breath rounds. If a Net-Weaver tries to upload a combat script into your neural port, you use the under-barrel EMP launcher. It’ll fry his deck and anything electronic within ten yards."Silas picked up the shotgun, testing its balance. The weapon felt like a natural extension of his arm. He racked the charging handle, the heavy mechanism sounding like a closing vault door. "And what about the hard drive? If I give it to Apex, he kills Chloe anyway. He can't leave witnesses who know what's on that ledger.""You aren't giving him the real drive," Bianca said, pulling a small, silver data-slug from her pocket. It looked identical to the corporate asset blueprint Chloe had sent him. "I had our house technician compile a logic-bomb virus. The moment Apex plugs this into his mainframe terminal to verify the key, it will trigger a catastrophic data-loop. It’ll blind his local drone network and fry his command center's servers for exactly three minutes.""Three minutes," Silas repeated, his voice low. "That's my window to find Chloe and get out.""That's your window to kill everyone in that room," Bianca corrected coldly. "Because the second those three minutes are up, the entire Cyber-Kings syndicate will descend on that yard like locusts."Silas slung the tactical shotgun across his back, checking the retention straps. He filled his belt loops with extra magazines, two EMP cells, and a heavy combat blade. He looked down at his comm-pad, checking the countdown timer. Eleven hours remained. The clock was ticking, and the rain above was getting louder. He turned toward the dark exit of the maintenance tunnel, his eyes hardened into twin chips of flint. The disgraced detective was gone. The tired security guard was gone. For the next eleven hours, Silas Vance was nothing but a weapon designed for one specific purpose: to bring his daughter home, or burn Neo-Veridian to the ground trying.
