Chapter 11 of 22
Neon Bazaar

The transition from the lead-shielded silence of the meatpacking facility to the sensory assault of the Sector 3 Neon Bazaar felt like plunging headfirst into a malfunctioning quantum server. The rain here wasn’t dark; it was dyed a sickly, iridescent pink and green by the thousands of cheap holographic advertisements projecting from the stacked container tenements. Lower-slums citizens, their faces obscured beneath polarized plastic visors and cheap filtration masks, moved like a colony of ants through the narrow, crowded stalls. The air reeked of cheap synthetic street drugs, fried noodle grease, and the sharp, copper smell of scorched circuitry from the open-air repair kiosks.Silas Vance leaned heavily against Bianca Falcone’s shoulder, his heavy combat boots dragging through the shallow, glowing puddles of the market floor. His vision was a chaotic nightmare. The dark vignette at the edges of his eyes had expanded, and the flashing red warning—NEURAL FAILURE IMMINENT—was now scorched permanently across his center view."Keep your head down, Silas," Bianca hissed through her clenched teeth, her hand securely gripping the grip of her modified combat shotgun hidden beneath the heavy folds of her soaked leather trench coat. The shallow gash along her jawline was still leaking a thin trail of crimson, but her dark eyes remained hyper-focused, sweeping the crowded market stalls for any sign of a corporate uniform. "The Archon’s automated network can't scan us through the bazaar's heavy radio-frequency noise, but Sterling Tech’s street spotters don't need a signal to spot a dying man.""How much... further?" Silas rasped. A thick drop of dark blood spilled from his left ear, splashing onto the matte-black tactical vest that still held the precious Sterling Tech extortion data-slug tightly zipped inside the inner pocket. Every breath felt like inhaling liquid glass. His internal core temperature was climbing to the point of brain death."Through the cyber-chop alley, just past the neural-mod vendors," Chloe Vance whispered from his other side. She was tightly gripping Silas’s arm, her blistered, raw wrist wrapped in a torn piece of cloth. Despite her own physical exhaustion, her tech-student mind was working frantically, her eyes darting toward the public terminal monitors lining the market walls. "Dad, the terminals... they're flickering. The Archon is brute-forcing the bazaar's local subnet. It’s overriding the security firewalls one stall at a time to track our biological heat signatures. We have less than ten minutes before the whole sector goes dark."They turned a sharp corner into a subterranean, neon-drenched dead-end alleyway lined with rows of heavy plastic strip-curtains that reeked of industrial disinfectant. Hanging above the final rusted iron door was a buzzing, cracked sign depicting a glowing blue vector line.Bianca didn't knock. She raised her heavy combat boot and kicked the locking latch mechanism, forcing the door to swing inward with a loud metallic crash. The interior of Doc Vector's clinic looked less like a medical facility and more like an advanced high-tech salvage yard. Skeletal chrome arms, disconnected synthetic lung assemblies, and rows of glowing nutrient jars containing organic muscle tissue hung from the exposed ceiling beams. Sitting in the center of the room beneath a massive, circular shadowless surgical lamp was a slender man in his late forties, his eyes completely replaced by a spinning, multi-lens cybernetic optic array that clicked and focused like a camera lens. His arms were modified from the elbows down into intricate, multi-jointed surgical tools that hummed with a low ultrasonic frequency."Falcone," Doc Vector said, his voice a dry, synthesized monotone that vibrated from a speaker box implanted in his throat. He didn't lift his hands from the synthetic optic nerve he was currently soldering on his workbench. "You’re tracking a high-tier corporate alert footprint into my clean-zone. The dark net says you went rogue from Don Carmine tonight. That makes you bad for business.""The Don doesn't own this block anymore, Vector," Bianca stated coldly, stepping forward and leveling the heavy muzzle of her Benelli M4 shotgun directly at the doctor's chest plating. "And we aren't here to negotiate with credits. You have a military-grade Chronos-V processor to extract, and you have exactly five minutes to get this man onto your operating table before his brain liquefies."Doc Vector's spinning optical lenses clicked rapidly as he shifted his gaze toward Silas, who had completely collapsed onto a nearby steel surgical chair, his breathing shallow and his body trembling from the critical neural overload. The doctor’s mechanical fingers froze. "Chronos-V? That’s an illegal Overclocker prototype from the old badlands campaign. The bandwidth required to run that chip cooks human grey matter. I don't touch corporate military hardware.""You will touch it if you want what's on this data-slug," Silas choked out, his trembling fingers reaching into his vest and pulling the silver data-slug out just far enough for Vector's optical scanners to read the triple-helix watermark of Sterling Tech. "The master encryption ledger... for the entire city's graveyard. Help me save my daughter, and the data is yours to sell on the dark net."Vector’s mechanical eyes whirled in a frenzy of mathematical calculations. The sheer value of the extortion matrix was enough to buy him an exit out of the lower slums forever. "Get him onto the primary table," the doctor commanded, his voice rising in pitch as his surgical hands instantly switched into a array of high-speed laser scalpels and neural-clamps. "The Archon’s network probe is already scratching at my external lead barriers. This is a zero-sum procedure."Chloe held her father's hand tightly as Bianca took an elevated defensive stance by the reinforced entry door, her sniper rifle resting against a stack of discarded server racks to cover the alleyway."Hold still, Silas," Vector muttered, slamming a heavy pneumatic stabilizer bracket over Silas's forehead, locking his skull flat against the cold steel of the surgical table. "The micro-port is completely fused to your central nervous system. I have to use a localized electromagnetic pulse to sever the neural filaments before I cut the physical chip out. If my pulse timing is off by a millisecond, the backlash will stop your heart.""Just... do it," Silas whispered, his eyes locking onto Chloe's face one final time through the spreading white static. "Chloe... look away."Vector didn't give her the chance. He driven a heavy, four-pronged mechanical applicator directly into the base of Silas’s skull, latching onto the burning micro-port.A sickening, high-frequency electrical whine filled the clinic. Silas’s spine arched violently off the surgical table, every muscle in his fifty-year-old frame locking into a rigid, agonizing spasm. His jaws clamped together so hard a fracture line formed along his lower tooth. Blue, unnatural static electricity erupted from the insertion point, tracing a visible web of glowing energy down his neck and radiating outward through his arms."System temperature is at ninety-eight percent!" Chloe screamed, her fingers flying across Vector's diagnostic terminal to monitor the neural bandwidth. "The chip is fighting the extraction script! It's dumping its residual data straight into his cerebral cortex!"Suddenly, the buzzing neon lights of the clinic went completely dark. The low, comforting hum of the facility's independent power generator died instantly, replaced by a cold, terrifying silence.Outside in the alleyway, the chaotic noise of the Neon Bazaar vanished, replaced by the synchronized, heavy thud of military combat boots striking the wet gravel. The clinic’s auxiliary terminal screen flickered back to life, but it didn't display Vector’s medical diagnostics. Instead, a towering line of glowing, crimson code wrote itself across the monitor in a rapid, aggressive script.THE ARCHON DIRECTIVE: LOCATED.A low, digitized, omnipresent laugh echoed through the surgical room's overhead speakers, sending an icy shiver straight down Chloe’s spine."The extraction is a statistical irrelevance, Detective Vance," the disembodied voice of the Archon boomed through the clinic, causing the surgical tools on the shelves to rattle. "You have survived the meat grinder of Sector 4, but you cannot delete a network. Sterling Tech’s primary execution battalion has completely encircled this block. I am turning off the bazaar's oxygen scrubbers. Welcome to the final clean-up phase."Bianca Falcone didn't hesitate. She racked the charging handle of her anti-materiel sniper rifle, the heavy metallic clack sounding like a closing vault door in the darkness of the room. Through her thermal scope, she watched as the plastic strip-curtains of the alleyway were sliced to pieces by the smart-targeting lasers of twenty approaching corporate executioners."We’re out of time, Chloe!" Bianca shouted over her shoulder, her voice a disciplined anchor against the approaching storm. "The doctor has to pull that chip now! I’m opening the defensive line, but my coverage is about to get extremely loud!"From her elevated perch by the door, Bianca squeezed the trigger. The heavy anti-materiel sniper round erupted from her barrel in a brilliant bloom of orange fire, tearing through the clinic door to begin the defense of the Neon Bazaar, just as Doc Vector jammed his mechanical scalpel down for the final, bloody cut into Silas's skull.
