Chapter 1: Unexpected Guests

2.8k words

Cool air brushed my skin as I stepped through the grand doors of the Hazbin Hotel. My gaze swept across the familiar chaos of the lobby, now transformed into a vibrant, if slightly unhinged, game night arena. Charlie's bright smile was the first thing I registered, followed by the rest of the crew, each radiating their unique brand of demonic energy. "There you are!" Charlie exclaimed, her voice bubbling with enthusiasm. She practically bounced over to me, her excitement infectious. "I'm so glad you came! I was worried you might be busy." She gestured wildly towards the lounge, a whirlwind of board games, card decks, and an alarming quantity of sugary snacks. "We're having a huge game night! Board games, card games, video games, everything!" Angel Dust, draped dramatically over a plush sofa, waved a long, furry arm. "Hey, look who's finally here." He popped another handful of cheesy puffs into his mouth, crumbs dusting his chest. Husk offered a terse nod from behind the bar, already nursing a drink. Vaggie gave a small, genuine smile. Even Alastor, leaning against the radio with that ever-present, unsettling grin, briefly flicked his gaze in my direction, a flicker of something unreadable in his eyes. Charlie's bright expression faltered slightly. She tilted her head, her brow furrowing in confusion. "Wait..." Her eyes scanned past me, then back. "Are you alone?" "No, I'm not," I replied, stepping aside. "I brought a friend. Or two, actually." Two figures emerged from the shadows just inside the doorway. The first was a tall, imposing demon with obsidian skin and eyes that glowed a predatory crimson. His sharp, angular features and severe expression commanded attention. Beside him, a smaller, more lithe demon with iridescent scales and wings that shimmered like oil on water, surveyed the room with an almost amused smirk. Silence descended. The lively buzz of the game night abruptly died, replaced by a sudden, heavy stillness. Angel Dust choked on his cheesy puffs, nearly falling off the couch. Husk's glass stopped halfway to his lips, his eyes wide. Vaggie's hand instinctively went to her spear, her stance shifting, ready for a fight. Her eyes narrowed, assessing the newcomers with suspicion and immediate distrust. Even Alastor's smile seemed to tighten, his radio static crackling faintly, a low growl rumbling in his chest. Charlie, however, remained frozen, her initial confusion slowly giving way to a look of utter bewilderment. Her mouth opened and closed a few times, no sound emerging. Her princess of Hell demeanor completely vanished. "These are... my friends," I finally managed, feeling the weight of everyone's stares. "This is Xylos," I gestured to the taller, obsidian demon, who gave a slow, deliberate nod. "And this is Seraphina." The scaled demon offered a small, knowing smile that didn't quite reach her eyes. "Friends?" Vaggie's voice was a dangerous whisper. "They look like Overlords. What in the actual hell?" Xylos's crimson eyes flared slightly at Vaggie's assessment. He took a single, measured step forward, and the air in the room seemed to grow heavier, colder. "We are not Overlords," his voice rumbled, deep and resonant, like stones grinding together. "Simply... allies." Seraphina chuckled, a soft, dry sound. "Allies of a mutual acquaintance. We heard there was a party." Her iridescent wings twitched, a subtle display of power that made the dust motes in the air shimmer. Charlie finally found her voice, though it was a little squeaky. "Oh! Um, welcome! To game night! We were just about to start... a game!" She gestured vaguely towards the table, her hand trembling slightly. Angel Dust, having recovered from his choking fit, slowly sat up, his multiple eyes fixed on Seraphina. "Well, well, well. What do we have here? New faces. And *stylish* ones at that." He winked, a flirtatious glint in his gaze. Seraphina's smirk widened, a flash of fangs. "Always appreciated, darling. You have a keen eye for aesthetics." Husk slammed his glass down, the sound echoing in the tense silence. "Don't encourage him, lady. He's bad enough as it is." "It's fine, Husk!" Charlie interjected, trying to inject some of her usual cheer into the strained atmosphere. "Everyone's welcome! Especially new friends!" Alastor's radio static intensified, a low, unnerving hum. His smile stretched, revealing more teeth than usual. "Indeed. The more, the merrier. Though I do wonder what delightful games *these* guests might prefer. Perhaps something with a bit more... *bite*?" "Actually," I said, stepping between the growing tension, "Charlie, I had an idea for the first game. To break the ice, you know?" I glanced at Xylos and Seraphina, who both maintained their inscrutable expressions. Charlie's eyes lit up, grateful for the distraction. "Oh! What is it?" she asked, practically bouncing again. "Truth or Dare," I proposed, a sly grin forming on my face. "Simple, classic, and always reveals a lot about people." I watched for reactions. Angel Dust immediately perked up, a wicked glint in his multiple eyes. Vaggie looked suspicious. Husk grumbled. Alastor's smile widened to an almost disturbing degree. "Truth or Dare? How quaint. And yet, how utterly delicious." His voice crackled with anticipation. Xylos remained silent, his gaze fixed on me, unblinking. Seraphina, however, let out a soft, amused hum. "A game of revelations and bold choices. I find myself intrigued." "Perfect!" Charlie clapped her hands together, a little too loudly. "Let's do it! Everyone gather 'round!" She practically dragged a bewildered Vaggie towards the large coffee table in the center of the lounge, which was currently laden with an array of half-eaten snacks. We all settled around the table, the atmosphere still thick with unspoken questions and simmering distrust, especially from Vaggie and Alastor towards my new companions. Angel Dust, however, seemed to have taken a liking to Seraphina already, occasionally winking at her. "Alright! Who wants to go first?" Charlie asked, her enthusiasm unwavering despite the palpable tension. She looked around, her eyes lingering on Xylos and Seraphina, perhaps hoping they would offer to start. "I shall," Alastor announced, his voice a distorted radio broadcast. He leaned forward, his eyes gleaming. "Since our esteemed new guests have graced us with their presence, perhaps one of them would care to indulge? Xylos, was it? Truth or Dare?" Xylos's crimson eyes met Alastor's, a silent battle of wills playing out across the table. The air crackled. The other residents of the hotel held their breath, waiting to see how this incredibly tense interaction would unfold. This was going to be an interesting night. Xylos's voice, when it came, was low and even, a dangerous calm. "Truth." Alastor's smile sharpened, a predator sensing its prey. "Excellent. Tell us, Xylos... what is the most valuable secret you possess, and why are you truly here tonight, in the Hazbin Hotel, among us sinners?" A hush fell over the room, every eye fixed on Xylos. His expression remained unreadable, but a faint, almost imperceptible twitch at the corner of his jaw was the only sign of his reaction. He took a slow, deliberate breath, his gaze sweeping over each of us, lingering for a moment on me, then on Charlie. The tension was a living thing, coiling tighter with every passing second. Everyone waited, breathless, for his answer. "The most valuable secret I possess," Xylos began, his voice a low rumble that seemed to vibrate through the very floor, "is the location of a particular artifact. An artifact that could shift the balance of power in Hell entirely." His eyes, like smoldering coals, flicked to Alastor, then back to Charlie. "And as for why I am here... it is because I seek something. Something that this hotel, and perhaps its princess, might be uniquely positioned to provide. A specific kind of... *information*." Alastor's grin didn't falter, but a deeper, more predatory glint entered his eyes. "Intriguing. Information, you say? About what, pray tell?" Xylos leaned back slightly, a subtle shift that made him seem even more imposing. "About a certain ancient pact. A binding agreement made long ago, between powerful entities. A pact that, if broken, would unleash chaos far beyond what even Overlords can comprehend." His gaze fixed on Charlie, unblinking. "And you, Princess of Hell, are perhaps the only one with a direct lineage to those who forged it." Charlie's eyes widened, a flicker of fear mixed with confusion in their depths. She looked from Xylos to me, then back to the obsidian demon, utterly bewildered. The playful atmosphere of game night had evaporated, replaced by a chilling sense of dread. This was not the kind of fun she had envisioned. "A pact?" Vaggie whispered, her grip tightening on her spear. "What kind of pact?" "One that concerns the very foundation of Hell's existence," Seraphina interjected, her voice smooth and melodic, yet laced with an undeniable edge. "And the potential downfall of everything you know." She smiled, a predatory, almost gleeful expression. Angel Dust let out a nervous gulp. Even Husk looked genuinely alarmed, his ears flattened against his head. Alastor, however, seemed utterly fascinated, a dark amusement playing on his features. "My turn, I believe," Seraphina declared, her gaze sweeping over the room, landing on Angel Dust. "Angel Dust, truth or dare?" Angel, still reeling from Xylos's revelation, blinked, then straightened up, a determined glint in his eyes. "Dare, dollface. Always dare." Seraphina's smile widened. "Excellent. I dare you to... for the rest of this game night, only speak in rhyming couplets." Angel Dust groaned, but a challenge was a challenge. "You're a real pain, it's true, but a dare's a dare, what can I do?" He gestured dramatically, earning a snicker from Seraphina. "My turn, then!" Angel announced, struggling with his new linguistic constraint. He pointed a long, furry finger at Vaggie. "Vaggie, my dear, don't you fear, truth or dare, let's hear, let's hear!" Vaggie scowled. "Truth." She was clearly not in the mood for games. "Alright, fine," Angel replied, wringing his hands. "Tell us now, without a frown, what's the silliest thing you've ever done in this town?" Vaggie hesitated, her cheeks flushing a faint grey. She glared at Angel, then sighed. "I... I once tried to teach Niffty how to properly fold laundry. For an entire afternoon." She shuddered visibly. "She just kept trying to stab the clothes." Niffty, who had been quietly organizing a pile of discarded snack wrappers, suddenly piped up, "But they were so wrinkly! They needed to be *punished*!" A ripple of laughter, albeit a nervous one, went through the room, easing some of the tension. Even Xylos's lips twitched slightly, a ghost of a smile. Vaggie, still slightly mortified, turned to Husk. "Husk. Truth or dare." Husk grunted. "Truth. Ain't got time for no stupid dares." "Fine. Why do you always smell faintly of cheap booze and regret?" Vaggie asked, her eyes narrowing. Husk's ears flattened further. "Cause that's what I am, kid. Next question." He took a long swig from his bottle, his eyes avoiding everyone else's. "Charlie. Truth or dare." Charlie, still processing the earlier revelations, blinked. "Dare! I always choose dare!" Husk sighed. "Alright, princess. I dare you to... convince Alastor to sing a duet with you. Right now." Charlie's face lit up. "Oh, that's a great dare! Alastor, come on!" She turned to the Radio Demon, her eyes sparkling with challenge. Alastor's smile seemed to freeze. His radio static crackled louder, a low hiss escaping his lips. He looked genuinely taken aback, a rare expression on his perpetually grinning face. He opened his mouth, then closed it, then opened it again, a sound like a faulty radio trying to tune in. "A duet? My dear Charlie, you jest! My voice is far too... *potent* for such a delicate endeavor," Alastor finally managed, his voice slightly more strained than usual. He cast a quick, almost panicked glance at Xylos and Seraphina, who were both watching him with unblinking interest. "No way!" Charlie insisted, already pulling out her phone. "You have a wonderful voice! Come on, just one song! We can do that cheesy pop song I love!" Alastor recoiled as if stung. "Cheesy pop? My dear, you wound me! My sensibilities cannot withstand such saccharine melodies!" "A dare's a dare, Alastor," I chimed in, enjoying the Radio Demon's discomfort. "Even you can't back down from a dare, can you?" Alastor's eyes narrowed, a dangerous glint within them. He looked from Charlie's expectant face to my challenging one, then to the knowing smirk on Seraphina's lips. He let out a low, guttural growl that was quickly masked by a burst of static. "Very well," he said, his voice dripping with reluctant theatricality. "But only if *you*," he pointed a sharp claw at Seraphina, "join in as well. A trio, if you will. To truly test the limits of our collective auditory tolerance." Seraphina's eyes widened slightly, then a slow, amused smile spread across her face. "A trio? With the Princess of Hell and the infamous Radio Demon? Now *that* sounds like a performance worth witnessing." She inclined her head. "Consider it done." Charlie clapped her hands, ecstatic. "Yes! This is going to be amazing! What song should we do?" Alastor groaned, but there was a flicker of something in his eyes – perhaps a perverse enjoyment of the situation, or simply the realization that he was truly trapped. He looked at Seraphina, a silent challenge passing between them. Just as Charlie began to hum a cheerful, annoyingly catchy tune, the hotel's lights flickered violently. The playful atmosphere, already strained by the presence of Xylos and Seraphina and the revelations about an ancient pact, snapped entirely. A low, guttural roar echoed from outside, making the very foundations of the hotel tremble. The sound wasn't just loud; it felt ancient, primal, a sound that promised destruction. Everyone froze. Alastor's static intensified to a frantic shriek. Xylos’s crimson eyes narrowed, and he slowly rose to his feet, a silent menace. Seraphina’s iridescent scales shimmered, her wings flaring slightly, revealing sharp, clawed tips. "What was that?" Vaggie whispered, her spear now fully raised, her knuckles white. Charlie, her face pale, rushed to the window, peering out into the perpetual gloom of Pentagram City. Another roar, closer this time, ripped through the air, shaking the glass in the frames. This wasn't a casual demon brawl or an Overlord squabble. This sound carried an immense, undeniable power, a raw force that made even the most hardened sinners in the room visibly flinch. "That... that sounds like a territorial dispute," Xylos rumbled, his voice low and serious, a stark contrast to the earlier game night banter. "But not just any dispute. That is a challenge of the highest order. A challenge for the throne." Charlie whirled around, her eyes wide with terror. "The throne? But... who?" She didn't even have to finish the question. The answer was already manifesting, a colossal shadow growing larger against the distant crimson sky, heading directly for the hotel. The lights flickered again, then died, plunging the lounge into near darkness, illuminated only by the faint, eerie glow of Alastor's eyes and Seraphina's scales. The roar came again, closer still, followed by the sickening crunch of something impossibly large tearing through the street outside. A monstrous silhouette loomed against the stained-glass window of the lobby, blocking out the meager light. Its eyes, twin points of malevolent fire, locked onto the hotel. "It seems our game night," Alastor's voice crackled, eerily calm despite the impending doom, "has just been interrupted by a far more dangerous player." The ground shook violently as a massive claw ripped through the hotel's front wall, sending debris flying. Through the gaping hole, a colossal, fanged maw, dripping with ichor, opened, revealing a cavernous throat that seemed to swallow the dim light. A deep, guttural voice, dripping with ancient malice, reverberated through the now crumbling structure, directed squarely at Charlie. "*Morningstar, you will answer for your father's transgressions!*" And then, a new voice, impossibly deep and resonant, echoed from the monstrous being, not quite a roar, but a chilling declaration that made the very air vibrate. It was a voice that promised utter obliteration, a voice that had been silent for millennia, now awakened and hungry for retribution. "*The pact has been broken.*" Charlie gasped, a strangled sound of pure terror, as the colossal demon's glowing eyes fixed on her, its massive head pushing further into the hotel, its intent unmistakable: destruction was here, and it was demanding a very specific payment. The hotel was under attack, and the game had just turned deadly. The 'information' Xylos sought, the 'pact' he spoke of, was no longer a theoretical threat; it was a clawed, fanged, roaring reality tearing through the very walls of her home, directly provoked by a broken ancient agreement, and targeting *her*. This was not just an attack; it was a reckoning, and Charlie, for the first time, felt the true, crushing weight of her family's legacy descend upon her with terrifying force.
