The Core Heist

The bound captive's triumphant sneer hardened, though a thin trail of blood still beaded from his split lip. “Ten minutes, Dathisi. Ten minutes until Obol sheds its dead weight.” He laughed, a raw, grating sound that bounced off the cramped metal walls of the service shaft. “And you, slum-weaver, will be right there with your precious… *kin*.” Chielro, still pinned against Orazia, let out a low, guttural growl that vibrated through her. His gaze, usually a calm, dismissive azure, locked onto the sneering captive with cold fury. “You will rue the day you ever spoke her name,” he promised, his voice a low, dangerous rumble. Breeno ignored the posturing. He grabbed the prisoner by his torn collar, dragging him roughly to a maintenance hatch. “We don’t have time for threats. The core is south-southwest from here, four tiers down. Qistrel’s faction should have cleared a path, but expect resistance.” He kicked open the hatch, revealing a dizzying drop into a vertical shaft crisscrossed with power conduits. “Wait—” Orazia looked at the bound noble, then back at Breeno. He couldn’t possibly bring him. “Dead weight, as he so eloquently put it.” Breeno shoved the man forward. With a muffled shriek, the lord tumbled into the darkness, his descent punctuated by the increasingly distant clangs of his body striking the shaft walls. Orazia flinched. “Breeno!” “Necessary collateral, Orazia.” Breeno’s gaze was hard, uncompromising. “He served his purpose. Now, move!” He gestured to a series of ladder rungs disappearing into the gloom. “Ten minutes, remember?” Chielro, though still radiating a simmering rage, took Orazia’s uninjured hand. “I’ll go first. Don’t look down.” Orazia took a steadying breath, the metallic tang of fear sharp in her mouth. Her arm throbbed where the vibro-blade had cut her, but the urgent rhythm of the ticking clock in her head drowned out the pain. She followed Chielro, their descent a blur of clanking metal and rapidly passing conduit pipes. Breeno was right behind her, a silent, efficient shadow. The shaft opened into a vast, cavernous hall. Pulsing with cerulean light, the Celestrium’s core hummed in the center, a colossal orb of interwoven energy conduits radiating raw, siphoned forces. It was magnificent, terrifying. And heavily defended. Three loyalist guards, clad in gleaming chrome armor, stood sentinel at the main access catwalk, their particle rifles aimed squarely at the hall’s entrance. Above them, four automated defense emplacements, their optical sensors glowing crimson, swept the perimeter with silent menace. Their path was completely blocked. “Well, this is an inconvenience,” Chielro murmured, his hand tightening on Orazia’s. Despite the grim situation, a flicker of his old, sardonic wit returned. “Qistrel’s forces appear to be otherwise engaged.” Just then, a sharp *CRACK* echoed through the vault. One of the chrome-armored guards buckled, a dark stain blossoming on his chest. Before the others could react, two more shots rang out, quick and precise, felling the remaining loyalists. The automated guns, designed to target movement, remained inert, their sensors still sweeping the empty entrance. From the shadows near a collapsed section of wall, Matron Qistrel emerged. Her usually pristine formal gown was streaked with soot, her silver hair disheveled, but her eyes held a fierce, triumphant glint. She held a smoking plasma pistol in one hand. With the other, she tossed a small, ornate data-chip straight to Orazia. “The master override for the core,” Qistrel stated, her voice surprisingly calm. “It’s keyed to your unique lineage, Fendrill. Only you can activate it. Get to the terminal on the far side. Now!” “Thank you,” Orazia managed, clutching the chip. The realization that Qistrel truly was on their side, fighting *for* her, hit her with a profound sense of vindication. “We’ll hold the line,” Qistrel said, her pistol already raised, aiming at a newly activated ceiling gun. “Go!” Chielro didn’t hesitate. He surged forward, dragging Orazia with him, Breeno right on their heels. The main control terminal, a raised platform of glowing consoles, was across the gangway, seated under the thrumming core. As they sprinted onto the metal spans, the core’s automated defenses shrieked to life. The crimson eyes of the turrets locked onto them. A concussive wash of concentrated force slammed into the steel plating. Orazia felt her feet lift from the metal, the air around her thickening, pressing down. Chielro cried out beside her, his body contorting. “Chielro!” Orazia screamed. A concentrated beam of kinetic energy caught him, pinning him violently against the ceiling of the vault, high above the core’s pulsing light. His face was contorted in agony, his breath coming in ragged gasps, his limbs splayed out, unable to move. “Orazia, the chip!” Breeno yelled, his voice strained as he fought against the increasing air pressure. He dove for the terminal, his hand reaching for the input slot. He had the code. He just needed the chip. From behind a console, one of the fallen loyalist guards, surprisingly not dead, stirred. With a dying surge of adrenaline, he raised his particle rifle, firing a desperate, wild shot. The bolt struck Breeno squarely in the shoulder. He staggered, a cry torn from his lips, and crumpled to the ground. The master override chip, dislodged from his hand, spun through the air in a shimmering arc. It tumbled, end over end, straight towards the colossal, cerulean energy shaft of the core. The light pulsed, illuminating the chip for a split second before it vanished into the glowing abyss. Breeno lay bleeding, incapacitated. Chielro was suffocating, pressed against the ceiling, his struggles weakening. Matron Qistrel, still firing back at the remaining emplacements, saw it all. “No!” she screamed, her voice cracking with despair. “We have no way to shut it down!”
