Chapter 7 of 10
The Slipstream Sabotage
1.2k words
The catapult piston struck her launch frame with a pneumatic shriek, hurling her out into the monsoon abyss.
Talasya felt the familiar, bone-jarring kick as her rig bit into a hundred-mile-an-hour gale. Sheets of purple rain slapped her visor. She clamped her teeth, reached down, and patted the shivering brass cylinder bolted to her chest harness.
*Tick. Tick. Tick.*
"Hang on, little clock," she muttered through chatter-prone teeth. "High-precision brass balance wheel. I hear you. The humidity must be hell on your springs, but I'm getting you to the penthouse on time!"
Behind her, Bresal screamed—not a war cry, but the shrill squeal of a pig tossed into a threshing machine. His rig cleared the hangar threshold three seconds late, wobbling like a shot goose.
[ACT THREE: LOVER'S SPAT IN THE SQUALL]
[The Female Lead flees with the tragic token of your shared past!]
[Item Deployed: 'Cupid’s Gilded Entanglement Snare' (Rank C).]
[Cast the net! Secure the prize before your rival's soul-shattering wrath consumes Jhalong! Time remaining: 08:14.]
Hot magenta text burned across Bresal's retina, blistering his eyeballs. In his trembling right hand, a spool of spun-silk mesh flared with nauseating, rose-tinted light, smelling faintly of cinnamon and cheap gin.
"Talasya! Unbuckle the chest rig!" Bresal shrieked into the storm, the wet wind snapping his cheeks like wet canvas. "It’s going to explode! It’s a street-gang blast core, you stubborn lunatic!"
To Talasya, buffered by three layers of padded leather and the rhythmic thump of a Jhalong storm cell, his words arrived as distant garble.
"What's that? You want to draft behind me?" she yelled over her shoulder, offering him a cheerful thumbs-up with one grease-stained gauntlet. "Stay close to the intake plume, Bresal! The draft will pull you along! We'll split the lease deposit by nightfall!"
"No! Drop it! Drop the damn—"
From the oily murk beneath them, three black-iron sky-skiffs roared out of the smog. Their hull-plates bore the chipped red cog of the Iron-Gutter outfit. Armed thugs hung off the outriggers, shouting curses, brandishing harpoons and pneumo-carbines.
"Courier scum!" bellowed a scarred marauder balanced on the prow of the lead skiff. "You got the Boss's fire-pot strapped to your tits! Cut it loose or we flense you off the spars!"
"Look at those rude bastards!" Talasya fumed, tucking her elbows tight against her ribs. "Blocking the express lane! That's a five-point guild infraction!"
She shoved her rudder peg down. Hard.
The harness groaned as she dove into the Cog-Spire Vent, a narrow exhaust chute spitting boiling steam between two industrial tenements. It was a route explicitly banned by the Guildmaster under penalty of license forfeiture—the legendary 'Banshee Squeeze.'
Two iron skiffs banked sharply to match her trajectory, their twin steam engines whining at peak pressure.
"She's committing suicide!" one gunner yelled.
Talasya didn't blink. She held her breath, counting the rhythm of the exhaust pulses. Three... two... now.
She yanked both pitch-cables simultaneously. Her wings stalled, dumping lift in a violent flutter. The vacuum behind her collapsed with a deafening *thump*, creating an artificial low-pressure funnel that pulled the chasing air currents inward.
The two iron skiffs, flying wingtip to wingtip in their greed to grab the package, were caught in the rogue shear. Their steering rudders lost bite. The port skiff skidded inward; the starboard skiff tilted upward.
With a hideous, tearing crunch of sheet metal, the two pirate craft slammed into one another. Ripped fuel lines met red-hot boiler casings. The resulting blast turned both vessels into a single tumbling fireball that tumbled down into the neon-lit depths of the city.
Talasya caught the thermals off the explosion, banking neatly out of the vent with a wide grin. "Turbulence compensation! Ten out of ten!"
Behind her, Bresal barrelled through the smoke, choking on soot, tears leaking into his stolen goggles. His System timer was down to six minutes. The rose-tinted net in his hand hummed with desperate urgency.
[Romantic tension critical! She shows off her reckless vitality to make you jealous!]
[Throw the net, you miserable worm! Capture her affections!]
"I don't want her affections! I want my skin attached to my bones!" Bresal howled. He leveled his arm, aiming the shimmering pink mesh straight at Talasya's back. "Forgive me, Talasya! This is for both of us!"
He pulled the release lever.
The Cupid's Gilded Entanglement Snare shot forth with a wet *fwump*, expanding into a glittering pink web that sparkled through the rain like a cloud of crushed rubies.
At that exact microsecond, the third skiff—having flanked around the smoke—fired an armor-piercing shrapnel rocket at Talasya's spine.
The rocket screamed through the air, trailing black smoke.
The pink love-net intercepted the missile mid-flight.
Instead of wrapping around Talasya's torso, the magical gossamer collapsed around the spinning warhead. The snare’s reality-bending romantic runes interpreted the six-foot rocket as an aggressive suitor attempting an uninvited embrace. Pheromone glitter sizzled across the iron skin of the munition, forcibly locking its steering vanes in a passionate, rigid twirl.
"Wait, what?" Bresal choked.
The netted missile violently swerved ninety degrees off course. It bypassed Talasya entirely, screeching toward the massive rusted floodgate of the ancient North Windway—a five-foot-thick iron grate long ago sealed by the municipality to stop storm drafts.
*BOOM.*
The warhead struck the sealed gate and detonated with enough concussive fury to shake the foundations of three residential tiers. Shrapnel sprayed the masonry. The ancient iron gate shattered into jagged fragments, instantly unblocking a massive, subterranean draft channel that had been dormant for half a century.
A colossal jet of clean, hurricane-grade air roared up from the breach, blasting upward into the storm.
Talasya caught the draft directly beneath her wing-spar.
"An express slipstream!" she cheered, her voice trilling with absolute delight as the vertical gust launched her skyward like a bolt from a siege engine. "The municipal maintenance crews really outdid themselves this week!"
She surged past the mid-tier smog in seconds, skipping twelve switchback air corridors and leaving the remaining syndicate ambush far behind in the murk.
Bresal was sucked into the draft right behind her, screaming in pure terror as the g-force flattened his cheeks against his teeth.
[Task Update: The intended target was moved by your passionate display!]
[Proximity Bonus applied: Destination nearing!]
[Warning: Target's true fiancé approaches to claim his bride! Prepare for dramatic confrontation!]
"True fiancé? What true fiancé?" Bresal gasped, his vision swimming with dark spots as he clawed his way through the dense clouds of smoke.
They burst through the top of the exploded shaft, rocketing out into the rarefied air of the Upper Spires, where the monsoon clouds tore apart beneath the crimson flare of high-altitude navigation buoys.
Ahead of them, parting the purple mist like an iron butcher knife cutting through fat, drifted a monster.
It was the *Iron Maidenhead*—Lord Varkhas’s personal dreadnought. Two hundred paces of black spiked armor, belching sulfur, its eight primary siege cannons swiveling with grinding hydraulic thuds until their yawning muzzles pointed straight at the approaching courier flock.
