Chapter 1: The Ghost of Missed Chances

1.2k words

Cold rain stung Victor Matthew’s eyes, mixing with the sweat and dirt coating his forehead. He wiped his brow with a muddy sleeve, keeping his gaze locked on the sodden pitch. Mud clung to his shins like wet cement, weighing down his legs even though he hadn't run a single yard today. Screams from the touchline drowned out the distant roar of Sunday afternoon traffic. "Move your lazy legs, Jackson!" bellowed Coach Miller, his face turning a dangerous shade of purple under his flat cap. Victor squeezed his fists inside his pockets, his knuckles turning white as he watched his teammates struggle. Sitting on the cold metal bench felt like a slow, agonizing execution. Five-nil. Another humiliating Sunday league slaughter was wrapping up, and his team, the Hackney Rovers, were being utterly dismantled. Nausea coiled tightly in his stomach, a familiar, venomous knot of inadequacy that had lived in his chest for years. Memories of his failed Chelsea academy trial three years ago flashed behind his eyelids, sharp and agonizing. He could still hear the scout’s dry, dismissive voice cutting through his dreams. "You lack the killer instinct, Victor. You're just not built for the pressure." Shaking his head to clear the ghosts, he pulled his collar up against the biting wind. Outside the white chalk lines, a small crowd of local parents and unimpressed onlookers huddled under broken umbrellas. Their mocking laughter drifted across the field whenever a Rovers player slipped in the deep puddles. Nobody looked at Victor. Coach Miller had ignored him for the last four matches, leaving him to rot on the bench while players with half his technical ability stumbled around the pitch. Water dripped from the peak of Victor's cap, running down his nose. He wanted to scream, to demand a chance, to show them the footwork he practiced alone in the dark on the concrete courts of his estate. Instead, he swallowed the lump in his throat and remained silent, paralyzed by the fear of making another mistake. A sharp, shrill blast of the referee’s whistle cut through the damp air, signaling a merciful end to the ninety-minute nightmare. Time had run out. Looking down at his clean, unused boots, Victor felt a heavy weight press down on his shoulders. Sweat-stained jerseys and slumped shoulders defined the Rovers players as they trudged off the field, not even bothering to look at each other. They didn't care anymore. His chest ached with a mixture of pity and deep, burning frustration. Feet dragging through the mud, Coach Miller didn't offer a word of comfort as he packed up the training cones. With a heavy sigh, Victor stood up from the bench, his joints stiff from the damp cold. He walked toward the edge of the pitch, picking up a stray ball that had rolled into the weeds. Nobody called out to him. To them, he was just a ghost, a squad filler who existed only to occupy a spot on the roster. Underneath his ribs, the old, familiar voice whispered that they were right, that he was nothing but a failure who would never escape the mud of London's amateur leagues. He reached the rusted metal equipment bin, ready to toss the ball inside and head home to his cramped flat. Suddenly, the world around him froze. Air turned heavy, thick as syrup, and the patter of rain died away into absolute silence. A bright, electric blue light erupted in front of his face, casting long, unnatural shadows across the empty pitch. Victor stumbled backward, his heel catching in the mud as he dropped the ball. Words began to form in the glowing ether, hovering in sharp, digital lines before his widening eyes. "INFINITE GROWTH SYSTEM ACTIVATED." A surge of bewildering hope, laced with pure terror, electrified his entire body. Was he losing his mind? Before he could even process the glowing text, the bright blue interface began to flicker violently, sending sharp static running through his vision. A mechanical voice echoes in his mind, "Warning: System Malfunction detected. Core functionality… compromised."
