Chapter 9 of 10
Unplugging the Router

Dalvion’s gaze slid from the cracking void behind the dais to the scrawny figure on the altar. Zethris thrashed, a thin whine escaping his throat as the purple marks on his flesh flared, each one a thread of unraveled existence. A stream of hex values and unreadable runes cascaded across Dalvion’s vision. He leaned closer to the screen, his brow furrowed.
“Look at this,” Dalvion muttered, gesturing vaguely at the empty air. “The regional partition is about to corrupt. And this idiot,” he pointed at the boy, “is acting as the main detonator for a hard reset. What kind of QA approved this architecture?”

“The logs are clear,” Dalvion declared, ignoring the panicked Vordrak and the boy’s dying gasps. “I need to stabilize the core matrix. That means re-routing the energy overflow. This poor rendering of a human is irrelevant to the overall server health.” His fingers twitched, miming a complex set of keystrokes.
Vordrak bared his teeth, spat red bile, and lunged. “You… you *blasphemer*! You will not undermine Vaelia! The work *will* conclude!” He flung a hand forward, conjuring a whip of crackling shadow and concentrated malice, lashing it towards Zethris.
Kholgath, who had been attempting to clean a smudge from his silver tea tray with a trembling thumb, saw the shadow-whip arc towards the Emperor. For a fleeting instant, the millennia of subservience, the ingrained fear, the very core of his demon lord existence, wavered. Dalvion’s casual dismissals of danger had slowly, inexplicably, begun to rewire the Flayer’s purpose. A butler protected his master’s assets. And even if this 'master' found the Emperor to be 'irrelevant rendering,' a good butler knew the value of everything in the household.
“No!” Kholgath shrieked, a sound half-gargle, half-bellow. Dropping the tea tray with a clang that echoed through the groaning hall, he threw himself forward, a surprisingly agile blur of ebony scales and tattered silks. He moved with a speed that belied his usual terror, interposing his gaunt frame between the whip and Zethris. The shadow-whip struck Kholgath’s back, shredding his raiment and eliciting a guttural roar of pain. But the boy on the altar remained untouched.
Before Vordrak could react, Kholgath, still groaning, snatched Zethris off the slag-stone altar with one clawed hand. The boy, limp and screaming, was dragged off the dais. The marks on his skin, no longer channeling the altar's draw, went dull. The vertical pillar outside the hall, which had been stuttering, steadied slightly. A glyph prompt flashed across Dalvion’s internal display, too quick for him to parse.
“What are you doing, you oversized tea-kettle?!” Dalvion snapped, momentarily distracted from the dimensional fault lines. “I was about to patch that overflow! Now the architecture will just crash without a clear dump destination!”
Vordrak tracked Kholgath dragging the boy away, his brow twitching. The working, on the verge of its culmination, had fractured. The supreme power of the God of Ruin, briefly within his grasp, was now slipping away. He had sacrificed decades, countless lives, and his own moral compass for this moment. He would not be denied.
Vordrak threw his bulk onto the destabilized altar. “If this vessel cannot hold the Rite, then *I* shall become the vessel!”
The air shimmered with oppressive heat. The slag-stone dais, already cracked, erupted in a violent explosion of corrupted light. Vordrak’s mortal form dissolved, consumed by the unleashed energies. In his place, a towering colossus coalesced, tall enough to scrape the vaulted ribs above. The form shifted like heat haze, its stare sharp as white iron.

The new monstrosity, Vordrak’s mind bound into the unstable core, roared. “Behold!” it thundered, a grating resonance that shook the flagstones. “I am Vordrak perfected! The architect of your demise! The true inheritor of this world’s ruin! You, aberration, will be purged! Your very existence will be erased!”
The giant lifted a hand, condensing the air into a radiant spear aimed straight at Dalvion. The ground beneath their feet began to fracture, and the very light in the chamber seemed to bend and distort under the pressure of Vordrak’s newfound might. Kholgath, cradling the unconscious Zethris, whimpered, trying to cower behind a crumbling pillar.
Dalvion merely sighed. “Such dramatic flair. You’ve just corrupted the regional power grid by trying to self-insert your character into the core files. And now you’re trying to use a debug tool for a PvP attack? Utterly amateur.”
He walked, with an infuriating slowness, towards the towering deity. His steps were unhurried, as if he were merely strolling through a badly designed level. The white spear hummed, humming with wild force. Dalvion reached the slag-stone dais, now a cracked ring of sparks and split rock. At its center, where Vordrak had merged, a single obsidian crystal hummed with sickly purple luminescence, overloaded and unstable.
“The problem here,” Dalvion lectured, completely oblivious to the impending annihilation, “is that you tried to hot-swap the primary power conduit without proper fail-safes. Now the baseline grid is spiking.” He bent down, scrutinizing the crystal with the detached air of a technician examining a faulty circuit board. “This isn’t a bug,” he concluded, straightening up. “It’s a feature, poorly implemented. And you know what you do with poorly implemented features that cause system-wide instability?”
Without waiting for an answer, Dalvion raised his foot. He swung his leg, not with force, but with the precise, practiced motion of someone who had done this countless times before. His boot connected with the base of the obsidian power crystal. There was a dull *thunk*.
The hall fell dead silent. The white spear, poised to strike, froze mid-air. The giant stopped moving, its bright glare stuttering against Dalvion.

The colossus did not explode, roar, or collapse. It simply dropped frames like a bad texture load. His radiant form glitched, then buffered, dissolving into a million harmless, shimmering pixels that drifted away into nothingness, leaving behind only the lingering scent of ozone.
Kholgath, still clutching Zethris, stared with slack lips. The boy in his arms stirred, his eyes fluttering open. Zethris looked up at Kholgath, then slowly, painfully, pushed himself away from the demon lord’s grasp. He limped forward, his gaze fixed on Dalvion, who was now dusting off his hands, utterly pleased with his 'fix'. Zethris’s voice, though weak, carried a new, chilling authority.
“Give me my body back.”
