Chapter 6 of 10

Bypassing the Paywall

1.1k words

A high-pitched squeak, barely audible, escaped the crack in the stone wall. Emperor Zethris, or what remained of his divine consciousness in this frail, mortal husk, found the new perspective jarring. The world was a vast, sprawling labyrinth of shadow and grime, punctuated by the rhythmic drip of moisture from the palace’s forgotten arteries. He, the God of Ruin, now inhabited the quivering form of a sewer rat, its minuscule heart a frantic drumbeat against his dissipating will. His chosen vessel, a creature he had mentally wrestled into submission moments prior, scuttled through a narrow vent. The smell of decay and forgotten refuse was overwhelming, a stark contrast to the perfumed air of the imperial chambers he usually occupied. Zethris pushed past the indignity, focusing his splintered mind. Vordrak, the viper, had made a mistake. He’d allowed a sliver of Zethris’s power to escape during the last torture session, a fleeting echo of the God of Ruin’s true might. Enough to possess a rodent, to slip through the cracks and eavesdrop. He emerged into a cavernous, dust-choked chamber beneath the palace’s deepest crypts. Runes, carved into the very bedrock, radiated a sickly violet light. At the chamber’s center, High Chancellor Vordrak stood, his voice a low, sibilant whisper that echoed unnervingly off the stone. He was addressing a cloaked figure, whose face remained hidden in the deep shadows. “The vessel weakens daily,” Vordrak hissed, his hand stroking a massive, black obsidian slab upon which more runes were etched. “The Ritual of Erasure is almost complete. His very soul, once the key to the dimension’s decay, will fuel my apotheosis. The God of Ruin will grant me immortality.” The rat’s tiny body convulsed. Detonation. His soul. Not to conquer, but to empower this usurper. The revelation struck Zethris like a physical blow, even through the veil of his rat-form. He had been a pawn, a battery, his true self destined for a gruesome end to fuel Vordrak’s pathetic ambition. The anger, cold and precise, began to coalesce within him, a dark fire in the rodent’s heart. He needed to warn someone. But who? And how? *** The Undercity of Vaelia reeked of stale blood, damp stone, and something acrid, like burnt copper. Dalvion wrinkled his nose, the scent assaulting his heightened senses. “This level design is just *awful*,” he declared, stepping over a collapsed archway. “The devs clearly ran out of budget for environmental assets here. Look at this texture work. It’s barely differentiating between a wall and a pile of refuse.” Kholgath, still a trembling, hunched shadow at Dalvion’s heels, kept his eyes fixed on the crumbling flagstones. His claws clicked softly as they navigated the oppressive gloom. The transition from Fort Malice had been… immediate. One moment, the fortress, the next, a dizzying plunge into the earth, ending with a jarring thud that had nearly liquefied his internal organs. Dalvion, of course, had merely brushed dust from his robes. They stood before a colossal, rusted iron gate, its surface encrusted with centuries of grime and flaking paint. It spanned the entire width of the cavernous tunnel, blocking their path deeper into the Undercity. Upon its center, a grotesque, leering face was cast in tarnished brass, its hollow eyes seemingly following their movements. Beneath the face, a series of cryptic symbols burned with a faint, malevolent light. [ACCESS DENIED: GATE OF RIDDLES. BLOOD SACRIFICE REQUIRED. OFFERING MUST BE OF SUFFICIENT DIVINE POTENCY TO UNLOCK THE PATH TO THE CHRONOS VAULT.] Dalvion stared at the floating text, then at the gate. “Oh, for the love of… A paywall? Really?” He jabbed a finger at the leering brass face. “They’re gating progression with an arbitrary blood sacrifice? This isn’t a challenge, it’s lazy design. Who implements this kind of archaic mechanic in a modern system? You want me to grind some random mob for its blood? Pathetic.” Kholgath swallowed, his throat dry. “My liege, the barrier… it has stood for millennia. None have ever bypassed its demands. It tests the very essence of one’s being.” Dalvion ignored him, already circling the gate. He ran a hand over the intricate, shimmering runes around the brass lock. “A ‘divine potency’ lock. That’s just a glorified encryption key. And a *bad* one at that.” He scoffed. “They’re trying to force a microtransaction. Not on my watch.” He extended his hand. The brass lock, embedded deep within the gate, began to whine. The intricate runes flared, then stretched, distorting like melting plastic. With a soft *pop*, the entire mechanism ripped free from the ancient metal, tearing a gaping, jagged hole where it once sat. Dalvion held the smoking, still-glowing chunk of brass in his palm. It was surprisingly heavy, pulsating with trapped, dark magic. Kholgath staggered back, a choked gasp escaping him. The ancient gateway, legendary for its inviolability, was now just a door with a hole in it. And Dalvion was holding its heart. “Terrible source code,” Dalvion muttered, examining the pulsating brass. “Bloated. Inefficient. No wonder the system’s so unstable.” Without another word, he bit into the brass lock. The sound was like grinding stone, followed by a sickening *squelch*. Sparks flew from the impact. Dalvion chewed, a thoughtful expression on his face, as if tasting an unfamiliar, bitter fruit. The magical energies coursing through the brass were instantly absorbed, dissolved into the supreme vessel he inhabited. [SYSTEM OVERRIDE: INITIATING DATA PACKET INGESTION. USER: DALVION.] Dalvion swallowed the last metallic shard. He wiped his mouth with the back of his hand. “Much better. Tastes like rusty iron, though. Still, at least I’ve got admin access now.” He looked at the gaping hole in the gate. “Alright, let’s see what kind of terrible plumbing they’ve got running through this dump. Maybe I can find a backdoor to the server room from the maintenance tunnels.” He strode through the now-unlocked portal, which groaned on its hinges but offered no further resistance. Kholgath, still pale, followed. As Dalvion continued deeper, a faint hum began to resonate from the very stones beneath their feet. It started low, a barely perceptible vibration, then grew steadily, a deep, resonant thrum that shook the ground. [ALERT: UNFORESEEN PROTOCOL ENGAGED. RE-ROUTING OF CHRONOS VAULT CONDUITS DETECTED.] [WARNING: ANCIENT DEFENSE MECHANISM ACTIVATED. SLUMBERING LEVIATHAN UNLEASHED.] Below them, in the unseen depths of the Undercity’s sewage waters, something vast and primordial stirred. The water level in the nearby troughs began to rise, churning violently, as if an entire subterranean lake was suddenly roiling. A single, colossal eye, the color of ancient jade, opened in the blackness beneath the city, staring upwards into the gloom.
